Does anyone have advice/experience on sound proofing (sound dampening) between two semi-detached houses? I have an 90-year old semi, brick, and from the basement it looks like about a foot of space between my plaster wall and the neighbour's. Their TV sound travels through the upstairs late at night. I've heard you can have some kind of foam injected into the space between walls- does this work? Is it expensive? thanks.

A second layer of drywall with sound deadening caulking in between the two is a cheap and effective solution.

Some drywall has extra sound deadening and accoustic dampening properties. Quiet rock is one:

It is expensive.

Spray foam will work, but is a hassle and expensive. Works better when the void is exposed before finishing.

Finally, before taking the full leap. It may just be a specific area causing sound to get through through. You can open the wall up at that point and add roxul or sound deadening insulation. It may save time and money.

Here is a Holmes on Homes episode addressing the same problem - overkill as per usual:

Unfortunately this is one issues with older semi's. Remember that if the other sde does not do anything you will still have the sound energy transfered from the other side to the large cinderblock structure between the houses...it just echos...

In our basement, even with sound dampening via Roxul insulation in the wall, we still can hear sounds from the otherside of the wall...though it is much better.

Unfortunately with the plaster molding on the ceiling, adding anything to the walls would end up looking daft.

In many cases with the older homes, the shared cinderblock wall is finished directly on top of the blocks...not with studs and drywall.

In one of those cases, does any one have any suggestions on how to sound proof or dampen the sound. We don't have the room to build the wall out. We are considering putting Quiet Rock directly onto our side of the party wall. Maybe some Sonopan or Green Glue underneath.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks
