Hi All,
I'm planning to install an island in the kitchen of my house.
As per the Ontario's building code and the city of Ottawa rules, are there any restrictions in term of
1) the size (length and width),
2) position (how far should it be from the cabinets, fridge or anything similar?)
3) and shape of the island?
4) Other things?
Many Thanks!

I've never herd of anything of that nature.
If your going to be installing a sink or any electrical recepiticals you will need a building permit for the electrical/plumbing work to be done. Thats pretty much about it.
Of course if you have a small kitchen your not going to make the island too big since there wont be any space left over.

1) the size (length and width),
2) position (how far should it be from the cabinets, fridge or anything similar?)
3) and shape of the island?
4) Other things?
1) The size of your island will depend on how large your kitchen is.
2) There is a general rule of 3 ft. away from the cabinets, so you can easily move around, open your dishwasher/fridge, drawers, etc...
3) Shape can be anything you want it to be, as long as it fits within your space. But try to stick with a more classic shape, rectangular or square IMO :)
4) You can add a small sink to your island if you want but not necessary if your main sink is right beside. Again, depends on your budget, size of kitchen & your lifestyle. You can also add a wine fridge into your island & a breakfast bar if you plan on using it. Electrical plugs can also be added. I also recommend adding 'false' door panels to accentuate your island & give it that extra detail. And if you are going for a more classic look with cream coloured cabinets, make the island a dark brown, it will look like a piece of furniture in your kitchen  It looks great & it's very trendy now.
