If I have a movie in x264 format, and I hookup my laptop to my tv with a vga cable, will it show it in hd?

It is my impression that it should provided you have a decent enough video card in your laptop that is capable of handling the .mkv HD video file.

So should I try to play it on my laptop, and if it works, well plays smoothly, then I can hook it up to my tv, select a widescreen resolution and watch it?

That sounds like a good plan of action.
Basically right now I have my secondary computer hooked up to my main machine through a network cable (dual network card ports on my motherboard), and the secondary computer is connected through VGA to my plasma.
All video files are shared through the network and I have had no problems playing the HD files onto my plasma. I have an HD2400 in the secondary machine.
I don't suspect you will have a problem getting your laptop to play the files, unless it happens to be ancient, lol.

S-Video = 640x480, so not HD.

Just tried playing it on my laptop, the audio seems to be intact, but the video is kinda skippy. Maybe its cause I have other programs opened, ill try it with everything closed. Whats the best player to use? Im using VLC right now

I use media player classic with klite codec pack. Never had problems and always been happy.
BTW:
HD streaming content would come from HDMI or DVI on your PC.

No sorry, you will still get a picture but it won't be HD.

please dont spread misinformation.
youre thinking about DHCP content.
If he has a HD x264 file wrapped inside a MKV container, any meduim that can transport 720 or 1080 resolutions, will also output the file at its native resolutions aswell. VGA is more than capable.
so as long as your laptop can output the same or higher resoltion than youre hd file, and your tv can display that content, you'll be fine.
HINT - please read your TVs manual, and find out its native screen resolution, and try to output that from your laptop. the less up/down conversions, the better.

yep first see if your laptop could play the file smoothly.
Then see whats the highest resolution output your laptop could have. Then see the highest resolution input your TV could have. then connect everything together and make sure the laptop is outputting that resolution and your good to go.

use a better codec for x264: CoreAVC
