make sure you save it as JPEG/JPG file extension, IE can't open native photoshop file formats

i save it into a folder.. and then i open up the folder and preview the file... it previews fine.. but when i double click (default program opening the file is IE), it gives me an X

i can try opening in mozilla, and it'll say
The image “whatever.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

try saving again because it looks like the file may be corrupted
alternatively, you can upload the photoshop file provided its not something you don't wanna share on the internet

Instead of saving as JPG in the "File -> Save", use the "Save for Web and Device" function in the File menu.

You should have the option to save it as a JPEG when using that, click the box that says "GIF" or whatever, and select JPEG instead.

it only gives me these options:
HTML and images (.html)
Images only (.gif)
HTML only (.html)

Make sure it's RGB.. Image>Color
It's a common mistake to have a file as CMYK (for printing) .. X in iE

Options sound like ImageReady and not Photoshop :)

+1
However for Photoshop CS2 (at least) you can go Image > Mode > RGB Color

OP if you rightclicks on the image you made with your Photoshop 7.0 -> Properties -> Summary tab -> Advanced, you will see that the "Color Representation" is "uncalibrated". IE only recognized sRGB calibrated image. So it will give you an "X" for "uncalibrated". shrugs is correct by pointing out that you need to set your color to RGB Color.
