Acer ranks as the world's No. 3 branded PC vendor behind the Hewlett Packard Company and Dell Inc, recently claiming the No.3 rank from Lenovo More recently, it has surpassed Dell in worldwide notebook shipments, becoming the world's No. 2 branded notebook vendor.

On October 16, 2007, Acer Inc completed its acquisition of Gateway for approximately US$710 million. Its closing US$1.90 share price is far below the US$4 average Gateway held in the mid 1990s and drastically below a high of US$84 in late 1999. The US$1.90 per share is just barely over half of the split adjusted IPO price of US$3.75 in 1993.

eMachines was a maker of low-cost PCs based in Irvine, California. It employed about 135 employees and sold between 1 to 2 million computers per year before its purchase on January 30, 2004, by rival Gateway Computers. Gateway was purchased by Acer in October 2007, and eMachines is still used as a brand for low-cost PCs.

They do have the cheapest notebooks on the market. Cheap in every sense of the word.

LOL...I agree that they have the cheapest notebooks but the quality varies...I've seen ppl have nothing but trouble right off the bat and some with no problems in years. I myself own a Aspire for over 2 years and so far no problems whatsoever. I guess everyone's MMV with Acer.

The Aspires are definitely cheaper and poorer quality than the Travelmates.

The construction is really poor and the material used is terrible. Cheap plastics, the paint fades really easily.

You must really take care of your gear if you still have yours in good shape after 2 years.

You must really take care of your machine and other just toss it around.

I guess it also depends on the bacth they come from. I know when my buddy bought his PSP he got it from a bad batch. A lot of dead pixels. He had 7 PSP's before he got a good one. In the end they gave him a full refund and he told them call me when the new shipment in is. Thats what he did and now he has a good PSP.

Gee, that sounds like my Vostro 1000 . It's already falling apart. I looked at some Acer laptops at Costco and they didn't seem that bad- at least for the budget range.

And they can release some pretty slick designs:

If they had that design on a 13-15" laptop, I would pick it up in a second.

It may look cool on the outside, but inside is all cheap plastic. Acer = worst laptops EVER. If a PC maker can't even design a functioning website, it's a bad sign.

I'd take Acer in a heartbeat over ECS. ECS if far far worse than Acer, but yes Acer does tend to make lower quality laptop then most. I've had luck with our Acer laptop, my girlfriends has been going for over a year now(got it for $340 from staples). However she's a lot more kind to her laptop then I would be.

+1 for a happy Acer Aspire customer, 1.25 years. I hate the new designs though.
