any idea how fast the prices of blu ray burners will drop? how much longer before theyre mainstream. i noticed that new egg has bluray burners for aroun 400 bucks now. there was one that included 1 bluray disk free. that seems pretty good to me.

The media is still very expensive so I doubt Blu-Ray burning will become mainstream anytime soon. This technology is still in its early days much like DVD back in those days. We're probably at least 2-3 years away before it hit mainstream. I probably won't buy a Blu-Ray burner until it hits $150-$160. It was at that price point several years ago did I first bought my first Pioneer DVD burner.

The pace will pick up now that the market has settled, but as Sgt_Strider mentions, we're still talking a good while before we see HD media on the cheap.

The only way I see Blu-Ray discs becoming cheap is when the Taiwanese and or Chinese companies start cranking out cheap discs to compete with the Japanese made discs. I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure most if not all discs are made in Japan and they're probably of better quality, but cost more than $10 a disc. When I first got into the DVD burning game, my Pioneer DVD burner cost me $169 before tax and each DVD-R 4x media cost about $2.51/disc at that time. I think this was back in 2003 when I was burning games like mad crazy for my PS2.

With the competition gone now there's not a lot of downward pressure on prices.

Does anyone know if the disc manufactureres would have to pay licensing fee's to the Blu-ray association to make the media?

That's not true as Sony and other manufacturers will be competing amongst themselves for marketshare. There will be competition for manufacturing Blu-Ray discs and burners just as there is competition making DVD burners and discs.

Of course! The BR group spent billions developing the technology. Do you honestly think they'll give it away just like that? Use some common sense man..

Don't buy it now as I am also waiting for it to drop. Look at DVD Burners... They used to cost me like $300 like the cheapest back then, and look it now, its only $35... I bet BluRay will have better burning speeds coming too, so just wait and sit tight

The media's not that expensive... you can get them for about $10 per 25GB disc. The problem is that the burners are like $1000. Also, are there any programs that support Blu Ray authoring?

I guess lowering the licensing cost would help drive pricing down.

Actually the burners have come down in price since last year. I've seen LiteOn Blu-ray burners around the $400 range...but still bloddy expensive.

If it hits $100 or lower range mark, I will grab one for sure... Hehe... I just need BluRay discs to copy data files off my hard drive so I can make some room...

BestBuy now has BlueRay burners for $350.00. If only the price of media went down more.

lol you're kidding me right? $10/disc isn't expensive? There is just no way in hell will Blu-Ray writeable discs will take off at that price. Until it hit $2-$3/disc, I highly doubt anyone will buy these discs in blulk.

It's not going to happen anytime soon. It's probably 2-3 years away before we see reasonable prices for the burners and or the media. The problem is that the BR group is stopping the transfer of the technology to China and or Taiwan. Because as soon as these guys start making discs, prices will drop and the BR group will have problem recuperating their R&D costs.
