They are having some difficulties, but after refreshing for an hour or so I was able to get in and place my order and received my confirmation email within minutes.
Quite worth it...Oh also I called in and they said you can call this number and place a order, but I haven't tried it as it's long distance.

I wouldn't want to be on the May 30 9pm bus
filled with "frugal" people who paid 50 cents and rushing onto the bus
If you visit Greyhound bus terminal friday night, you'll see that overnight bus lineups are LONG.... especially New York lines (inc. Rochester/Syracuse/Buffalo stops), so this "free" promotion will only make it worse, I think
keep us updated! all RFD'ers wear RED and have a RFD meet on the bus

I am hoping that they really have free wi-fi on the bus or whatever it says in the star article, otherwise, it's one mighty long ride...

Megabus is certainly legit. They have been around Europe and Western US for a while now. This is just a promotion for the new Toronto routes. I've tried their $1 LA-SF buses and theey are spacious and comfortable. Newer than any greyhound I've taken in my life!

Megabus brings you to Penn Station (train station). You can transfer to subway after that to virtually any location in NYC. Last time I went, I opted for a boutique hotel (you can find these online) which is reasonable if you have 2 or 3 friends to bunk with.

Only available now is June 3 & 4, One way to New York. Return is $160
Booked 4 to but didn't book return!!! For 50cents, will figure out how to come back!!!
Edit: Return tickets on some dates are only $20 each, still worth it, i guess
Question: Wonder if I can squeeze my 2-1/2 year old and a 2 month old on our laps and save 2 tickets on the return trip?

You probably already know this, but I suggest that you book some type of return before you go. The border guards likely will not let you enter the US without proof of a return trip. I know that greyhound always warns people about this.

Hmmm pretty interesting. Im going back home for 2 months this summer and trying to figure out the best options for flights and i did a quick search for 3 seats from Toronto to Buffalo and round trip its $16.50 for all 3 of us. Thats incredible and well worth it. I will watch the post to hear how others trips went since I will be traveling with kids.

Typically, megabus pricing starts at $1. At least out of Chicago, every bus is sold at $1 for a few seats, $5 for a few more, $8, $15, $20, $25 or whatever on up. Every route has a maximum price. So, if you snagged the $15 or $20 tickets, chances are they were not the absolute lowest price, but $20 TDOT-NY is not at all a bad deal when compared to Greyhound.

Quick question to those who have taken MegaBus before (in the US or UK), do you just show up with your confirmation number?
At least with Coach Canada you had ticket printouts (with barcodes, even).

"Quick question to those who have taken MegaBus before (in the US or UK)"
It's been around in the States and U.K. for a while now -- other posters have mentioned taking it before as well.
It's new in CANADA, but I'm assuming it operates the same type of confirmation system for it's American / European counterparts.

You paid $40 for a one way ticket back? you could book a round trip ticket on megabus on any given day outside of this time period for $15 each way. Try booking something in June, July or August from Thursday to sunday, and it would have only cost you $2-$30 roundtrip.....but maybe you should just forget what I'm saying.

lol...No it needed to be on those dates - it's for my gf's birthday. But I'll look into it for when I go to NY with my buddies :D even better deal! Thanks for the heads up. And yeah, I paid $40, but for TWO one-way tickets back. So for $20 each on the dates that I needed them, hey, I'm not gonna complain!! Naturally, the RFD'er in me DID twitch when you said $15 back though lol.

for staying over 1 night only, there's cheap hostels for around $20/night. No need to pay over $30 unless you want it right in mid Manhattan area.

lol...No it needed to be on those dates - it's for my gf's birthday.
Does anyone know if these deals are a promotional thing for Megabus? Or are the trips always in this price range (~$15-$20), all year round?
from what I've seen for all the dates they have listed, most of the tickets are $15 one way. and if you book it right, you can get the trip there or back for $1. And if you REALLY book it right, you can get round trip for $1 each way.
I took the bus to NYC once, and it was brutal. The trip's long, and you get woken up at every city they make a stop at, or at the border, and it's kinda annoying. But I would consider it again, for a round trip under $5. :D

sorry to hear that. i remember trying to book tix for the july long weekend too but didnt cuz it was relatively pricey.
"The number of passengers that you have provided is not recognized. Please try again."
if you're getting that error while trying to book free tix (may 30 - june 5) try searching again. i got the same error but did searches multiple times. i even restarted my computer and deleted my cache. and it finally worked :D
for those going to nyc between may 30 - june 6. the jays have a 3 game series at yankee stadium on tuesday june 3 - thursday june 5! there was an old thread about a $20 coupon off tickets at StubHub (http://www.stubhub.com) i think most of the codes are expired but here are a couple that might work:
$20 off - WEL040812Y6S (expiry date???)
$10 - POSTB24 expires 4/1
$10 -POSTL24 expires 4/1
ticket prices start at $6 (for bleacher sections) and $10-$20 for tier reserve sections.
shipping ranges from 11.95-24.95 which almost kills the deal.
but if you wanna see the jays in action at yankee stadium (the final season), this is your chance!

I took the greyhound. Sometimes they stop in Rochester, Syracuse, etc.
Since Megabus doesn't look like they're offering any buses to other New York cities, it might not be as bad.
but even still. sitting on a bus for 10 hours is still a b*tch.

I got the hyatt hotel in midtown east for $155/night on priceline. I was up to $125 for a 2.5 star level so i'm glad a 4 star was only a little higher...
I think I could have got the hyatt a little lower though, I was at $150 for a more central location and as soon as i added midtown east I got upgraded from a 3 to 4 so I may have been able to get it at about $145. You guys should try if you think it's a good price. (May 30 - June 2)

anyone know of other relatively inexpensive places to stay for NYC? i wanted to book the doubletree in jersey city but waited a tad bit too long and missed out. i'm looking to spend between $150-175/night, close to public transit, relatively safe area and within minutes to Manhattan. I've only been there once before and that was with a tour bus so i'm not too familiar with where to stay outside of jersey city.

If you missed the Megabus deals, Greyhound's new "neON bus" which is exactly the same concept is currently selling tickets for $1.00 each way with no booking fees. https://www.greyhound.com/home/en/DealsAndDiscounts/Neon.aspx
This one doesn't stop in Buffalo.

This is actually my first time in Ny as well and from the helpful advice I received from priceline I can say the location is pretty much in the middle. I'm planning to just use a cab to get to the hotel as it should be too far. Click HERE (http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?showtopic=49238&) to see the advice I received. I think it's a pretty good rate compared to hotels in close by which are much more expensive.

This might be a dumb question but, I was able to find some dates for the Neon (Greyhound) site, but when I go to fares, the really cheap tix $1/$2 show up under "6 day advanced purchase" What does this mean exactly?
Do I have wait for 6 days prior to departure date and then try and purchase then? Ex. If I wanted to leave on June 30th, would I have to wait until the 24th to buy these tixs? Or does it mean that I have to purchase them AT LEAST 6 days in advance, ie. anytime before the 24th? I'm assuming it's the latter, but I just wanted to make sure.
Thanks for the link. :cheesygri

Whoever uses either of these two services (Mega or Neon), please report back with your feedback (ex. Travel times, wait times for the bus and at the border, how the 10hr bus ride was, and if there were tons of stops, etc).
Also, for either of these offers, is the $1 or whatever that shows up on the website the final price? Or are they known to add a bunch of extra service charges and stuff after the trip.

I'm very unhappy with how Greyhound handled the Neon ticket sales.
All last weekend, I searched for and tried to buy these $1 tickets, for various weekends, and got the same error that everyone else got. I emailed their support departments - both US and Canadian, and got a canned answer from the US about their website experiencing difficulties and to try again later.
Yesterday I phoned customer service. The rep told me that tickets wouldn't be available to purchase online at all until May 29. I pointed out that this is the day the service starts -- how could anyone buy tickets in advance? Her answer is that you couldn't.
I emailed Canadian customer service again, outlining how it's misleading to advertise something for sale that they don't actually intend to sell. It's been 24 hours, and still no response. And still no response from the email I sent them on the weekend.
And now, of course, all those $1 tickets through the summer are gone. I'm guessing that nobody had a chance to buy them.
I have the phone number for their national marketing manager, and I have a lot of time on my hands. That's a good combination.

What exactly does on-board video mean...?
Will they also offer an outlet to connect plugs? That I'm not sure of.

It's about 4km. You could probably walk it in 30-40 minutes. It looks like taking the bus would be just as long as you would have to change busses: http://www.nfta.com/metro/trip_planner.asp
I imagine a taxi won't be too much.
