Just picked up a 4GB Asus EEE Laptop from PC Village - those amazing tiny laptops. It's their deal of the day! I saved $31 dollars, this one comes fully loaded with 4GB HD, 512 MB RAM, wireless internet, camera and pre-installed Linux!
I already have one for my wife which I got in November and now I picked one up for myself!
Good deal - you can get it online or pick one up by 7PM! :)

got one for my gf. Very nice machine but the keyboard is way too small. I have average size hands and the keyboard is quite bothersome for me but for her small fingers it's fine.

can you upgrade the ram on these?

yes you can
the ram is pretty standard
they're really awesome for light - users (I.e. surfing the net, typing up word documents, light powerpoint use, excel as well as access. It uses OpenOffice which interoperates quite well with the latest version of MS Office. The linux system is VERY stable and I much prefer it to the Win XP version (yes, you can install XP if you get the 4gb version but I suggest not to). The screen is pretty bright.
I suggest you get a wireless mouse with it as the trackpad is somewhat annoying to use. I am far more productive using a mouse rather than the trackpad, I m even considering on getting rid of my duo core laptop for one of these as it does everything I need it to do. The only thing holding me back is that I find the keyboard to be a bit cramped.

Some of the eee pcs don't have the removable door for the ram slot. It makes upgrading the ram difficult without voiding your warranty.

You can add a Gig, but you can also install Windows and they run nice! But an awesome laptop for that price - school work, internet! it's good! :)

How does one survive on a 4GB hard drive?
I mean, you can't really use these to watch divx movies on it unless you delete it immediately after downloading.

I think a lot of the current eee's will be on sale soon, since the newer versions are about to be released.

You add SD cards for memory! SDs are dirt cheap nowadays - you can get an 8GB for $30!

Ya but the new ones are going to be the 9" screens so prices for the 7" is going to be still the same! Most stores run out fast! The PC village I picked up from today actually had only ONE left!

I got this back in November is a very very good machine. Ultraportable<-----I could actually work on the subway....Well worth $399.
I installed XP and added 8GB SDHC card, very good for web browsing and doing some work (MS-Office, SPSS, SAS), also good if you want a portable divx/rmvb player!

i think portability was a more highly weighted criteria than ergonomics.
Or it could have been designed for users with small hands.

I don't have small hands and it takes a bit of adjusting to get used to for the keyboard... couldn't use it for long periods of time but it's fine for web browsing/emailing.
The machine rocks, I stuck in 2gb ram, an 8gb sd card and installed windows on it. Runs great.. and I don't have to worry about it getting scratched or even really stolen since it doesn't cost $2k like my macbook :D

They removed the restriction about voiding your warranty if you upgrade the RAM, thankfully. My boss has one of these. Fantastic for note taking, surfing on the go, etc. He uses and 8GB card, upgraded the ram to 2GB and installed ubuntu on it.
I'm thinking of grabbing one myself, but I'm going to wait until the new models come out. I want to see how low these current models will go.

I didn't even know these came in black! They look better, imho.
BTW, the new version also comes with a touchscreen and GPS support! I'm not sure what support means exactly:

Theres a newer version coming out thats 9 inches. And supposedly has a touch screen. I think i'll wait to get this one. the keyboard is closer to standard size. And it probably has larger hard drive and ram, etc

Macbooks are hot trash. My bro recently spent over $2500 on his and it's so bad I can't even begin to describe just how poorly designed it is. I'd take the eee over a mac any day - that's how bad Macs are. I don't care what anyone says.

My iMac is laughing at you... I had a 4GB EeePC, it is small, connected and durable, but I ended up giving it to my Sis for university note taking.

canada computers is selling the 4g version without camera for 349.99 cash price. although pcvillage is selling it for 369.99 with the cam. i find the cam function is really useless. i have it on my regular laptop and not once did i ever really use it. and if i ever wanted to take pics i'd just go on my regular laptop. so to me buying the non camera version is better for 20 bucks less. although ppl can argue adding an extra 20 bucks gets u the camera. but i save a bit of battery power for no cam.

The 4G non-surf has a larger capacity battery, and a few accessories extra if I recall correctly.

i agree. If you have no use for the cam get the one without it. Even if the cam is shutoff the driver channel in and of itself can drain battery power.

I agree, the 4GB non-surf (399) is much better then the 4GB surf (349) because it actually has a higher capacity battery (3.5 hrs) in addition to the camera!

I've got a 4Gb version, and my coworker has the 8GB... one thing to note is this is for ultra portable applications. Travelling, on the go, etc... its not meant to replace anything you currently own. The best part about these things is all the mods people do on them, they are so cheap people are moding it like crazy.
http://beta.ivancover.com/wiki/index.php/Eee_PC_Internal_Upgrades
I originally was waiting for the 9" but really thought about what i am using it for, and Id rather have something smaller and lighter.
If youve held an EEE, you would realize that a touch screen is pretty pointless... this thing is so light, youd have to hold it down or you would just end up pushing it over when pressing on the screen.
I've got all my usb addons ordered from DX, waiting for it to come in to start modding.

is the rumor true about the ram not being upgradable on the lower end model($349 surf?), is it soldered on?
the 2GB surf is the only version now without upgradable ram (access panel on back)...

what's the main difference between the 4G and the 2G, besides the disk capacity? Is it possible to throw all apps/media files on a compact flash while having the OS installed on the solid state drive?
Very tempting but from what I've read about it, it's either people love it or hate it.

Haha I thought Value Village too, maybe it has something to do with the seeing the first letter of a word and the rest can be jumbled as long as the first letter is the same. Of course for RFDers the price figure spelt value and our brains immediately made the connection!

One of my friend picked up one of the 4g surf from Anitec for $299 after in store discount, upgraded to 2gb ram and got it work with XP home! Too bad their online price still $349.

This is the only EEE worth getting. The price for the 9" will be too close to real laptops and will not be worth it.
As for the typing, it takes a while to get used to but your average speed becomes faster because the keys are much closer than a full-size keyboard.
