View Full Version : WiiKEY 1.9s Update is here !

So I rec'd some sample wiikeys to test and verify, so far so good !
I have a few more tests to go, but an actual iso firmware is now out to update the wiikeys.
This update is only released to certain people at this time, but I will be using it on other chipsets other than d2b to test those as well :)
Just thought everyone should know the update is finally here. It will likely be on http://www.wiikey.cn in a few days or on my website as well. - Its here now.
the new firm is as guess 1.9s :)
New firmware adds features such as block updates, so you can prevent new updates from ninty if you'd like :) dev mode must be set to on. (must set through config disc)
Few other neat tricks.
6x is ironed out and working
ssbb original working
region free working
Al
Will add youtube links here for video of it in action
Video 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMnQl32f2cs - wiikey setup disc update
Video 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=398VVR0ARz4 - wiikey config disc preview
Will add links you can download the 1.9s firmware from when given permission.
http://www.wiikey.cn - you can download the update disc, config disc will be available in a few days.
All files are mirrored on my site, but I will release mirror urls when wiikey is hosting the config disc as well.

Sorry for the stupid question, but is this an update to the WiiKey hardware or just the firmware? Will it be usable on the newer mobos (ie the Wiis bought recently)?

You need a d2c modchip for new Wii's, WiiKey will not work.

k, I'll assume that means that it's a firmware update, not a hardware update.

more than likely it should work if region free is completely working.
looks like the update should be released in a few days once DJXP and others whom have received wiikeys finish testing it.
good to hear the Wiikey site is back and maybe this will lead to less complaining from people

About region free.
I have a wiikey with 1.9g and 3.2U on the Wii. I'm not able to play a PAL version of Mario Tennis for the Gamecube, even though I have chose region free with the 1.3 Config disc.
Has anyone gotten a PAL GC game to work on an NTSC Wii? or play a PAL Wii game on an NTSC Wii?

took a couple vids, not really sure how to tell 3x vs 6x. region free works but again its limited by the game, so youre in that 50% ratio for pal and 70% for jpn.
I think people will be quite happy with this update :)

only a handful of us globally have access to it. We're not authorized to distribute it. A final version will be released by wiikey when the word is given that everything checks out.

For some reason when updating from 1.9b to 1.9g the speed went to 3x even if you set it to 6x. I have a video now that shows (kinda) the speed difference. Not a big deal but heck a lot of people complained about it, so it was addressed. As I get more time I will add more videos. My vids can be found on youtube. ill post links once theyre up.

Should I update from 1.9g with REGION OVERRIDE ON? Should I use the 1.3 config disc to turn ON region override? Or wait for the new config disc before updating to 1.9s?

You can update direct to 1.9s from any firmware.
As for the updating with region free, I have found that I only get back WiiKey's from customers who did not do region free first before updates - this doesn't mean that it is a 100% prevention method, I have just found from experience it helps reduce the odds, although given the low frequency of chips dying, it may just be attributed to luck. Nonetheless I will keep reccomending it as any potential reduction helps.
Also note the update works on Atmel WiiKey clones, as well as the genuine WiiKey.

I've gotten a few titles... (PAL game on NTSC Wii.) There's a program you can run the ISO through to disable any upgrade it wants you to make on the Wii (running PAL updates on a NTSC Wii will brick it).. It will also fix the aspect ratio.
Can't remember the name of it though... like WiiBricker or something..
This is awesome news.. wiikey.cn has been down for so long.. I thought they gave up.... and I've been reluctant to upgrade to 1.9b due to the amt of wiikey burnout people have experienced... that and it was beta. ;)

You can update either way, if you have a 1.2 config disc (1.2b is the hacked one to run without gcos) then run that enable region and then do the update to 1.9s

You could update to 1.9s without worrying. You could also run 1.2b config disc and enable region free first then update. I haven't noticed any wiikeys actually dying permanently. The ones that did mysteriously stop were fixable via recovery disc, just have to leave the disc in for a while.

not that they wont, its just that testers like myself were not done completely testing. i havent found anything major yet though so hopefully its all good. the team will likely fix anything still reported if its big though.

I was told that I could let people know about the update and that I was testing it, but not actually distribute it. One of the distributors (I wont name who) had accidentally exposed the updates and people had downloaded it from their server. Once that happened it was just a matter of time that the leak would spread and cause confusion so they probably put it up early because of that. I don't think it will be the last update, but the last update until something new arises. I think things that do deter them from wanting to update is people rip the hex of the code and distribute it so people can make clones etc . However as long as there is some market for the original and people do still support the authentic product there will be some kind of support.

Some people are saying Update Blocker actually blocks ALL updates, even the small ones on the games disc. Sometimes they are required to play the game. But if it does only prevent different regions updates, that would be perfect!
I think if this new update solves all the problems including having 6x disc read speed back, and adding new useful ones like Block Updates, then Wiikey won't need an update until the next big problem. It does what it is supposed to do.
That said hopefully there no bugs. Wouldn't want to screw over many people because 1 tester decided to leak it.

Interesting... if you try it out let me know, right now all my systems i have access to already have the latest firmware. might be something people will have to keep their config disc handy for to let discs they know are safe to do the update and then turn the feature back on to block updates.

I only just installed (well, had installed for me...I'm crap at soldering) a wiikey the day my son bought SSBB.
US console; original US game disk; wiikey purchased last year (Dec, 2007...not sure what firmware that would make it)
Got the well documented disk read error. Ran the 1.9s update and game plays fine. However, it seems I need to do this everytime the game is played (or at least between powering off/on the wii). Today, actually got disk read errors on both SSBB and Rabids 2 (never tried that before with wiikey so don't know if that's relevant) even after running the 1.9s. Put 1.9s in and that failed as well. After reboot, re-ran 1.9s, rebooted, put in wii sports. That loaded. Then put in SSBB and that loaded.
Now, I imagine the SSBB is doing an update which is (partially?) undoing the efforts of the 1.9s.
Can anyone confirm/explain what's going on and whether there's a config disk I should use to set it up so that the game always runs?
My alternative thoughts were to install a switch on pin 2 or try the abort update method documented on the 1.9g (wonder if the g is relevant and whether I can abort the update on the 1.9s).

I read somewhere that I have to remove the disc then press reset to bypass the error in order to complete the update. The update went through and seem to be successful. But got the same error as before the update when put in the Galaxy. Tried a few time but no success. I tried the 1.9s, same problem and I have to remove the disc in order to bypass the error message. Update seems successful but still get the same error message when I put in the Galaxy. I was told by the modder that it is a real Wiikey. I just wonder if anyone has the same problem and do I need to change the wiikey to a new one. I can still play other backup game no problem.

do you think it might just be the laser ? about 25% of wiis are actually effected by a weak laser I believe. If you purchased your wiikey of a distributor from wiikey.cn then you should be safe in that you have an authentic if not then perhaps its a clone ? installing a switch would work if its not the laser.

yes there is, but lets stay on topic here, visit wiinewz forums there is a thread that address a program that is used to remove the duplicate channels, though it comes with a warning.

i know some people would 'bypass' the error using the gcos method or something when they were getting the check connections problem. doing it that method though it seemed to work did not actually work. So its probably either a loose connection or clone. im pretty sure its a wiikey though because i dont think another chip would get that far...though never tried just assumed their be some kind of checking involved.

The 1.9s update tests okay? If it installed okay, use the config disc 1.9s to set region free and try that. If it still does not work, re-install the firmware disc - do all points still test okay?

I think I have the same problem.
I could use my disc to boot up, create save file, but once it starts the intro movie, it give me this The Game Disc Could Not Be Read ..
I use verbatim DL, with or without layer break on IMGBurn, got the latest firmware on my Pioneer DVR-212D, I even tried it with benq 1640, but none of them could get pass the intro movie..
Eventually, I asked my friend burn one from his LG burner (A pretty old model which already discontinued.) and I could read his disc prefectly.
I uses Nero CD/DVD Speed Disc quailty check, mines are better than his in general, but the worst MAX error/failure were not! :( (My burners normally in <10 range, and his is like ~20. and for the worst case, it was like >1 million at or near the layer break for both and his is a bit lower)
Well, the only suggestion I could give you would be ask your friend who have a working disc and try their! It could be just your Wii doesn't like your PC/burner.....

Thanks. What is the diff between using the 1.9s config disc vs the older one that came out with 1.9s update? The old one seems to have all the new features anyway.

Anyone able to get Mario Kart Wii PAL to work on 3.2US Wii with 1.9s WiiKey? I get the splash screen, but after that just a black screen. FYI, I brickblocked + regionfrii'd.

not sure why yours isn't working (is your region override on the wiikey enabled?)
Me:
NTSC-U Wii 3.2U
Wiikey 1.9s fw version
Brickblocked & Regionfrii'd <- no update of console needed
works flawlessly.. been playing since yesterday

Use the 1.9s config disc and:
-enable region free
-disable Dev Mode and Block Updates
It will then work no problem.

Try using just the Wii Update Remover and that should do it.

Avenger,
I tried that as well. I tried a bunch of combinations of different software including some PPF stuff. Nothing would work. Not even JUST brickblocker or just wiiupdateremover. I gave up after 6 burns and finally just threw the PAL disc in by itself and let it do the PAL update. It worked, but I do have a couple duplicate channels.

I can't get Mario Kart to play.
I've tried a copy with Wii Update Remover and a copy with WiiBrickBlocker + Regionfrii.
The game shows up but when I click start I only get a black screen.
I've gone in and turned ON region override, OFF Update Block, OFF dev mode.
System has 3.2U installed and Wiikey 1.9
Any ideas?

Sounds like it should be working - I assume you know your media and burner work fine (other games work?). The only other thing I can think of is that some people have reported it will not work until you play Smash Brothers Brawl and install the update that comes with it.

Problem solved - now enjoying some mario kart.
You need to either swap the 3.1E_V2 update with 3.1U_V2 through WuM or download and play the North American Super Mario Bros. Brawl.
Avenger, thanks for the advice - worked like charm.

This makes sense, because I played Brawl (USA) AFTER Mario Kart (PAL). I guess I updated with the PAL update? Am I okay? Both games do work fine.

You need to run the update from Super Smash Brothers and then it will work for you.
That worked for me!

I tried to update the wii to 1.9 and it no longer recognizes the configDVD, firmwareDVD, or any of the backed up wii games.
It has no trouble playing with my original set. Is there a way to remove the firmware update and try again?

Your best bet is to try using a recovery disc.

Hey,
If you run 1.9s followed by Brawl, it will install the needed updates for you straight from disc, so you only need to get it running on the WiiKey to be okay. Also, be sure to run the 1.9s firmware disc, as the config disc will not work until 1.9s is installed.

For some reason my wii wont play ssbb, mario galaxy and mario kart anymore, everything else seems to work still. The 3 games used to work flawlessly until recently. I had 1.9g, and i thought an update to 1.9s might help but i have the same problem. I get the "an error has occured. Press the eject button and remove the disc, then turn the wii console off and refer to wii operations manual for help troubleshooing" message for all 3 games. Does anyone else have this problem?

What media are you using? Ensure you use good media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim DVD-R Media (or Verbatim DVD+R DL for SSBB_ and it should work fine. The new firmware is pickier with poor media, and you may have issues with read-intensive games such as those listed above.

I'm using ridata dvd-r's and fujitsu dvd+r DL for the ssbb, it was working flawlessly for about 2-3 months.. then all of i sudden they all just stopped working.. i was thinking about reburning the games without the error 001 fix, i think the 1.9s update takes care of that correct?

Using better media as I suggested should fix your problems then.

Another possibility is that you may have updated your wii? If you have updated to 3.3(?) then the wii won't play any Trucha signed games. I know this effects some copies of SSB and Galaxy (maybe the error 001 was fixed using Trucha?).
If you're not on 3.3 then I would try using better media like Avenger said.

I think that may be the solution to my problem! Is it possible to "un-Trucha-Sign" and iso that is already trucha signed? I don't think I have the original clean ISO's anymore... Thanks s0m3oNe, and thanks avenger for your help.

To run Trucha signed discs, you have 2 options.
For both of them you'll need to get homebrew up and running on your console. Once you've done that, you can use the homebrew app called GeckOS to run your trucha signed disc.
Your other option is to use the recently released firmware downgrader. I haven't personally used this, but from reading around it seems that it has worked fine for many people.
check out gbatemp for instructions on how to do either of these.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, I have had my wii sitting int he closet for at least 7 months so I have tons of questions.
1. I see that WiiKEy 2 is out. So does that mean wiikey v1 is useless now? (For newer games)
2. Once I update to 1.9s, is it safe to do wii system updates?
3. Will I have to look into another mod chip in the future?

1) no
2) yes
3) who knows, anything is possible.
