The video that accompanies this story is very disturbing. Discretion is advised.
It is a chilling video and if you watch it, you'll see a cold blooded murder in action.
But you'll also see something else - the gunman responsible and another man police desperately want to talk to.
The shooter is the person police say walked boldly up a path towards 87 Amaranth Court in the Dufferin and Allen area on Friday night, pulled a gun and without a second's pause, began firing straight at the six men assembled in front of a Lawrence Heights housing complex.
He then backs away while still firing and both he and the other man are seen fleeing in the opposite direction.
See the video here
Cops have taken the controversial step of releasing the shocking scene from security video at the building, hoping someone knows who the shooter is - and why he did it.
Police admit it's a disturbing bit of footage but think it's important the public be able to see it. "He simply walked up within 10 feet of the group, got their attention and without warning, opened fire while walking backwards," explains Det. Sgt. Brian Borg.
He adds the gunman intend to inflict as much damage as possible, and in that goal at least, he succeeded. By the time the suspect fled, six people, aged 18 to 21 were all down and one of them, 18-year-old Abdikarim Ahmed Abdikarim was dead, struck in the head by one of the shots.
Cops refuse to say how many bullets were fired, but indicate some of the victims were hit by the same projectiles. But Borg takes pains to note the six people shot weren't doing anything wrong, nor were they known to have been involved in anything that would have attracted the attention of the law.
"Our investigation to date shows that these young men, at the time of the incident, were not engaged in any criminal conduct or behaviour ... Simply put, they were there socializing, as they often did ... every Friday night."
But he adds it's clear they were the intended targets and that the gunman didn't miss.
Cops especially want to talk to the person seen walking up to the scene with the killer. They aren't sure if he knew what was coming or was taken by surprise when the shootings began.
Detectives still have no motive but say the victims are cooperating, something they don't always get in cases like this. Their only description of the suspect is vague:
* Black,
* 5'8"-6',
* 160-170 lbs.,
* Facial hair on the chin,
* Possible chipped tooth.
He was wearing a long white shirt under his black jacket and a baseball cap with a white logo. He was armed with a silver handgun which cops say was the only weapon involved.
A silver or grey car was seen speeding away from a nearby parking lot after the shooting and cops have yet to find it.
And as the survivors recover in hospital, those who knew the 18-year-old George Harvey C.I. student who perished in the ambush are wondering why it happened it all.
"It's shocking, you know? It's surprising that it's him, you know?" observes his friend Farouk. "It's like one of our close boys."
"Great guy," echoes Lamar, another pal. "He had a lot going for him ... It's very tragic. Honestly, I still don't understand what's going on, but God be with him and his family."
Abdikarim's murder was the 11th homicide in Toronto this year.
If you have any information, call the Homicide Squad at (416) 808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (416) 222-TIPS.
I can't be the only one absolutely shocked at the sheer heinousness and lack of any regard for human life as shown by this coward...

I just saw the video myself on pulse24. Its ridiculous. The security footage got everything on tape with such good quality too, i'm somewhat impressed by that.
But yeah its really disturbing to see. The guy just walks up, pops a bunch of bullets, and walks away so dam casually. Just insane. Hopefully the footage will help someone identify the person.

Wow, that's pretty heinous. Mind you, I visit liveleak.com and see all the crazy stuff captured on tape, but this cam footage of what happened is still pretty sickening. A bunch of kids just hanging out in an apartment foyer when some coward strolls up and shoots them all through the door without any apparent reason, no regard for life. Wow.

I'm not at all bothered by the video and perhaps it's because I watch too many violent movies or play too many games but that aside, the the description was complete and utterly useless unless you know that person intimately. Do you know how generic that description was? Most black teenagers would be a potential suspect going by that.
Anyway, I don't think people will come forward to the authorities because they either know him by blood or fear he will kill them if they did.
Pathetic.

I didn't see anyone's last moments. What I saw was a guy shooting into a building and then what appeared to be a shadow on the ground. Yes it's horrible but let's not overstate what's actually in the video.

Stupid shooter. Too stupid to even take off the sticker on his hat. Why almost every time someone is wanted by the police they are pictured wearing a new era cap? In fact anytime I have seen trouble started in public 99% of the time the person white or black is wearing a new era cap. So is new era the cap of scumbags?

Ya because from that few seconds of footage on that guy following you can determine indefinitely that he knew the shooter ... :rolleyes:

I hope that someone is able to help the police catch the guy because of the video being released. Its a shame that things like this can happen, but its a sad reality that it happens more and more. Its terrifying to think that letting my teenage kid outside could result in something like this since it seems like a everyday occurrence anymore. Going back 20 years when I was a teenager and it was very rare to hear about kids dying because of weapons. Fighting with fists was the worst case scenario growing up. Now gangs are on every corner, schools are equipped with metal detectors and too many kids to count are brutally killed each year because of guns.

I bet the survivors of this attack know who it is, but dont want to say it.

In the Sunday Star they quoted a resident who lived in one of the adjacent apartments. She said she has lived in her apartment for the last 17 yrs and is contemplating moving now that the area has become unsafe.
Any body else here find it incredibly annoying that our tax dollars have been paying a portion of this person's rent for 17 yrs. I can not understand how in 17 yrs the parasite couldn't better her situation and move out! >:(
