LONDON (Reuters) - It is the one moment every man wants to get right -- and which London floor-fitter Lefkos Hajji could hardly have got more wrong.
The luckless 28 year-old's dreams of giving his sweetheart, Leanne, 26, the ultimate proposal have literally vanished into thin air.
Hajji, of Hackney, east London, had concealed a $12,000 engagement ring inside a helium balloon. The idea was that she would pop the balloon as he popped the question.
But as he left the shop, a gust of wind pulled the balloon from his hand and he watched the ring -- and quite possibly the affections of his girlfriend -- sailing away over the rooftops.
"I couldn't believe it," he told The Sun newspaper.
"I just watched as it went further and further into the air.
"I felt like such a plonker. It cost a fortune and I knew my girlfriend would kill me."
Hajji spent two hours in his car trying to chase and find the balloon, without success.
"I thought I would give Leanne a pin so I could literally pop the question," he said. Continued...
"But I had to tell her the story -- she went absolutely mad. Now she is refusing to speak to me until I get her a new ring."
He is hoping the ring will still turn up.
"It would be amazing if someone found it," he added.

Sounds a little suspect to me...
Anyone remember the Mythbusters episode where they try to lift things with helium? Now, I'm assuming its a gold, silver or platinum ring... Thats not exactly a light item. That is unless he got one of those oversized balloons.
It might be more of a case of "Oh, I did buy you a really expensive ring *nudge nudge* but I lost it, will you marry me anyways"

I mean, he really effed up, pretty dumb, but what a b*tch for making feel even worse. He was trying to make the moment special and now she's gonna refuse to talk to him until he got her a new ring? Why would you want to marry a b*tch like that? I'd tell her to take a hike.

LOL I wonder if loosing that ring was the best thing to happen to him considering her reaction (and what she seems like from it).

such a stupid guy, i'm glad he lost the ring, he could have just added some weight at the end of the balloon string, if he used his brain a little, he would be engaged right now. :D

the store should have put weights on it, every place i've ever bought a helium balloon from they've but a weight on the end of the string.

If I was him, I'd have thought of that, thats why I'd give her the balloon in the building, and never leave the building with the balloon intact. At least if it is in a building, the worst that can happen is you let go and it hits the ceiling.
But as other people have said, the woman just made it worse, if she really loved him, she would say yes to the marriage, and work things out later.

I agree. If the woman is worked up by a well intended but horribly executed act of love from the man, she will not last the many trials of tribulations of marriage.

If she loved him no matter what, then she wouldn't have got so angry and refuse to talk to him until he buys her a new ring for a new proposal. Showing her true colours huh.

+1 That b*tch should say yes (well no, if that's her real answer) but not get mad that he lost the ring...

Exactly what I was thinking. I have a hunch that he was hoping a jeweler or a philanthropist would come forward and buy a ring for him. I must admit, it is a pretty good con if he doesn't have a jeweler's receipt to prove his purchase and even then what would stop him from still claiming the loss and gaining potentially two rings (in total)?
