View Full Version : I have a new fish! Fresh from PERU!

Mar 15th, 2008, 01:40 PM
This is a Serrasalmus Black Diamond Piranha and it was just imported fresh from Peru waters. I picked it up at 2am this morning from another Piranha owner who picked up his order and mine that day from the Airport. This species of Piranha is the most aggressive and dangerous there is and has nearly taken off fish keepers fingers if their not watching the fish while doing tank maintenance.

I measured him before putting him into the tank with my other Piranha's that are divided off and he measured up to be 12 ½ inches big. He is a gorgeous show fish for sure! I am selling off my Shoal of Caribe’s Piranhas because I can’t keep them divided like this for long or else they will begin to kill each other…they are already nipping each others fins and fighting. This would be an expensive weekend they died.

Anyway my long awaited king of the water is here! If anyone is interested I can post some more info on this species of Piranha.

You may be wondering whats on his chin? Its called a Chimple. Its from ramming himself into the glass trying to attack what ever walks by and he sees me sitting here and has been looking at me all morning. Most of these guys get chimples because of this.

I am wondering if he will take the fresh Talipia fillets.. or shrimp. Since he is from the wild he has been eating live food I have to change that.

If the barrier was removed, would the Black Diamond Piranha be the last one standing? :P

The fish cost me a total of 300 U.S without shipping fee's the sign above the tank says, 'Caution Piranhas Dont be An Idiot'

congrats, nice little beast you have.

I tagged along on a group order and in the end it was only this guy and myself who actually had the money for it. The shipping fee was insane for two guys

He would be the last guy standing. When one of the fish are attacked and weak the others will eat it.

Feeding live in dangerous to the Piranha if it catches a parasite or a disease form a feeder which is why hobbyist try not to feed live much. I try not to. thought i will be adding neons and such to the tank so ithe tank looks pretty active.

And the Rhom is not known for shoaling. These are a Soilitary fish because they are so aggressive. The shoaling Piranha’s are those of the Pygocentrus family, red Belly, Piryra and Caribe. And rare other Serrasalmus spieces. The Rhom has never been able to cohab with anything else.

I had a 9" rhom before, put some neons and he still managed to eat them. Mine had the white callous on the chin as well.

What I did is is net him close to the top of the tank, once he is relaxed...use scissors and cut/scalp it off, it healed really well, back to the same colour of the fish...something to think about down the road.

South american fish FTW!

Okay, I am a fish expertist too and I want to ask a few questions...

1. If the fish is imported from Peru, how the heck did the person brought it back without any paper work? I thought taking creatures from other countries and importing them without papers are consider illegal. I remember some guy took some baby sea turtles out of the water over to another country and got arrested for something to do with environmental damage.

2. What are you planning to feed it with? Live shrimps, dried blood, flakes, pellets, crusts? Or going with the expensive food, live goldfishs?

3. Let say if your going to clean the tank, how do you manage to get the fish out of the tank without getting hurt?

4. Did your fish arrive in a bucket or in a bag? Like how did the person handle the fish through the flight? Because this shows how a fish can get hurt from being shipped.

I dont want to come off sounding like a jerk but

If your an expertise as well why would you be taking your fish out when doing a water change (Aka Cleaning the tank) Its a beginners mistake to completely empty the entire tank and clean it then refill it and add the fish. That would kill your bacteria cycle and be stressful on the fish and could kill it. Your only suppose to do 25-50% water changes once a week if there is no big problems with the water.

How I do water changes is using a Python vacuum and fill four 5 gallon buckets then refill the tank with a hose until its to the top. And if I have Algae I use the tanks scrub brush.

This Piranha came sedated in a bag. And YES fish can be sedated with a special tablet that knocks them out for hours-days depending how much you give them. Lucky for me he didn’t have any ammonia burn during the flight here. And the paper work? Why would I have it its not like I’m going to ship my fish back if it dies.

Again I don't mean to be rude.

I'd suggest you relax a bit and not decide what people should be spending their money on and perhaps think about your long term health. This stress cannot be good for you.

I was curious so I looked it up:

In general, importations of ornamental aquatic organisms, especially tropical species held in hobby aquaria, are considered to pose a negligible risk of spreading disease(s) to local species. Thus, Canada, like many other countries, does not require special permits for the importation of aquatic organisms for the aquarium hobbyist. There are, however, some exceptions related to other risks posed to aquatic resources and habitat.

The Serrasalmus Speices can only be kept alone. They will kill each other if in the same tank unless divided off. Ask any Piranha keeper they will tell you the same this is why Fish stores that sell black rhoms, Elongs, etc are divided off from one another:P

plus I am getting some neons and stuff this week and maybe some smaller Cichlids.

it's just a matter of personal preference, I used to have a saltwater tank as well..

now I'm just keeping flowerhorns..

before i made my final thought of getting this big guy i was thinking getting an Arowana. Their nice fish. At first I never liked them but then they grew on me. One day I plan on owning one.

Saltwater tanks are expensive too... I used to have a small 15gal. People with bigger ones need skimmers and lots of live rock thats around $10/lb... Plus the fish and corals are expensive! Plus special lights, heater and chemicals.

I'm sure if someone knows what kind of fish that is, they know how to take care of it. You're not gonna buy an expensive animal if u don't know balls about it. Stop being ignorant.

Wow... I am guessing you missed the smiley sticking it's tongue out? I was being sarcastic... loosen up a little, will ya?

Hmm... I think I'd rather keep mine... thanks for the offer though
