View Full Version : Why do some people on RFD ignore your PM?

MS_Project

For example,

Sometimes I send a PM to someone on RFD to ask them something more specific about a related product or about their post. They tend to ignore the PM as if they did not receive anything. I'm glad that RFD has a feature here that shows when and what time did they read my message.

But, why do some people ignore PM??? I just don't get it. It only takes 1 minute type something up and send something back

I think because many people use PM's for stuff that should probably be discussed in the public forum. I very rarely PM another user. I think I would only do it if I wanted to discuss terms of payment/delivery for a product for B.S.T.

I've also ignored PM's that ask personal information about me. If I haven't revealed the information in a thread or my profile, then I probably do not want to reveal it. You're right, I could respond "I don't want to talk about that", but instead I choose to ignore it. I don't think that's such a huge breach of protocol.

I don't like it either. I don't keep eye on PM received alert. PM service has been abused so I just ignore it. Don't send PM unless asked.

would others consider you a low baller?

All I know is I tried to sell a few TV's here on RFD a month ago, and the amount of low ballers makes me NEVER EVER want to sell here again.

+2...if you reply...you'll get flamed for asking for a reasonable price.

Happens a lot when you reply to a lowballer.

Just because you decide you want to talk to another person doesn't impose an obligation on them to talk to you. You've chosen that and when you want to engage that other person, they may simply have chosen otherwise. It's like the telephone and the way people becomes slaves to the ringtones, email alerts etc. I feel no compulsion to answer a ringing phone for the only reason that somebody else made a decision to make it ring.

My 2 cents...and yes, I tend to not be a social animal, I actually don't like people much...lol.

Why reply if you have no interest in the conversation?
Just take the hint...and don't get offended!

I am sure if you got reply's from people saying, don't talk to me then this post will have a whole new angle about people who have no manners when answering PMs.

Probably not interested in replying to your specific concern ... maybe they've put it off for the time being and forgot ...

Not everyone has free time ALL THE TIME to go through and respond to every PM ...

I don't have this problem, but I could see the problem arising, that's all.

I find Ryan,Derek do reply PM's, but after 2~3 days for sure, which is fine by me

I do try to reply to most PM's I received, especially regarding the items I'm selling - UNLESS they are lowball offers then I just delete

And pardon me, I do give more well-known/senior members higher priority in response than newbies (especially post count 0 :P)

Makes me think of this person right here who had the thread going on about how he has an Acer AL1916W 19" Widescreen LCD and he WANTED IT GONE. Keywords, "WANT IT GONE".

Lo and behold, I pmed him and it's March 14th and this is what I see in my PMs.

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/2237/xpiercedxwq4.th.jpg (http://img144.imageshack.us/my.php?image=xpiercedxwq4.jpg)

He was asking $75, and I offered $75 and offered to meet the next day at a convenient location accessible by the TTC so you can't say i'm lowballing, or making a stupid reply.

EDIT: Incase you didn't catch on it's the XPiercedx idiot. Go look him up on the forums if you want too. He's NOTORIOUS for not responding.

So for all you people that say, we're lowballing, or asking stupid questions... then explain this. A buyer says he wants the item, seller confirms, then never replies to setup a meet time/location. Perhaps he sold it already, but at least he could reply and say so, instead of leaving people hanging.

LOL! Do you mean that you reply fastest to someone if they have a high post count?? That cracks me up that you think someone's post count somehow makes them a more valuable member and therefore deserving of a faster response. It could also be that someone has a high post count because they just shoot their mouth off about anything and everything. Quantity does not = quality. Do you also reply fastest to your friends that send out the highest volume of email?? ;)

I always reply if it's BST related or if it's techy talk.

Trolling or personal stuff I always ignore. I get enough headaches from real world friends, don't need political trash on RFD.

Um, some of us forgot we get private PMs when logging onto RDF... um. like I see I have one unread message and haven't a clue how long that's been up there! It's so small I don't notice it! Better go check that PM right now.

It's true we all forget to check our inbox. But there are RFDers with a history of crappy communication. They're ASKING us to PM them, but never read or respond *scratch my head*

XPiercedx is one dude who said, "sure pickup your LCD today, I live near Brown Line & Lakeshore". Then he disappears for a week without answering PMs even though he's reading & bumping his BST. A couple buyers paid in advance were pissed they didn't receive tracking numbers.

michelle is another member I can't figure out. She offers items, then never checks her inbox to tell people to pickup. A couple weeks later, she's asking for help or wants to buy something...but never checks or responds to PM. So why ask for help if you don't read & respond to solicited PMs?

To be honest, I sometimes don't reply to PMs immedietly. I may read them at one point, but I haven't the time to respond every time I get one. The most I've "ignored" a PM is a couple of days.

As someone who responds to pms I'm sometimes tempted not to. I'll get one sentance pms asking for elaboration on a point in as few words as possible with very little civility/respect/politeness. People practically demand information, and when you provide it you don't get so much as a thank you.

Basically, if you write your pms like a jerk (please and thank you help when you're asking for something - even just an opinion), don't expect a response. Typing out words in their entirety and not putting TIA at the bottom will make people more likely to respond. Also grammar and punctuation help. If you can't be bothered to type a sentance, why should I be bothered to type out a few paragraphs?

I'm not saying you've done any of these things, but I've had it happen on many occasions and it is a bit of a pet peeve of mine.

Yup. I see a pm/email/msn message and more often then not if I don't reply i am either too busy or lazy or just forgot. If it's important I will forward an email to my work and reply from there.

When you send a pm, under miscellaneous options there is the option already check marked:
Request a read receipt for this message

 at the people who ignore PMs only because they were ignored.

Umm, I do my fair share of ignoring PMs, especially lowballers.

But just like in real life, people will only give you the time of day if they have something to gain. Sad but true.

I always reply to my PMs, and I always try to write them out carefully, with full sentences.

I hate it when people read my PMs and then ignore them - especially if I asked a question! (And I always send reasonable messages - not lowball offers or anything like that). Instead of ignoring me you can at least say yes/no/I don't know/etc...!!!

If somebody ignores me, I'll assume they are an as*hole, and then cease dealing with them...

I only reply to PM's when I see a need to. If they say reply ASAP, I will. If it's something like "let me know," then not as quick. If it's a low-balling PM then I cease to answer.

Not everyone checks their messages regularly. Also, if you have a question, it is better to post it on the public board (in the appropriate place), that way thousands of users can potentially answer you.

You didn't give the context of your PM, but many sellers will ignore lowball offers, or maybe they just don't care enough to answer. Maybe they read your message and didn't have time to respond, etc. Maybe they didn't care.

I think the point is you should not *expect* a reply from anyone, no one has any obligation to respond to your PMs. I can't really see what you would be PMing that is so important that this fact would bother you anyways.
