Does any know where I can get cheap washer fluid??? I bought 8 last winter from Rona for about $1 each and then 4 from Zellers for about the same and now all gone. I have been looking around and no place is selling below $2 per jug now. I have used quite a bit this winter due to the snow we got and I am down to my last one now. Where can I get them cheap??? I would like to stock up some for the next few snow storms. Thanks!

Just use tap water, works very well in summer and fall.
In winter it's gonna freeze, what you can do is to buy some household methanol or ethanol and add in water, that's how those fluid was made in the first place.

I have done some research on line and found out about the same, but then according to the discussions I read DIY washer fluid is not as easy as it might sound, because the mix has to be precise in order to work in sub-zero temperature. I would not mind to try, but some one has to give me specific instructions and I will buy the methanol in bulk from Rona to attempt. I still cannot believe we have gone through 12 jugs of washer fluid in less than a year(for two cars), because the last few years we hardly used any due to lack of snow. That was why the fluid was on sale constantly back then and I was lucky to get two cases of 4 from Rona cheap. I do not find theirs any difference than the ones I used to buy from CT. I have bought from Zellers many times too and I believe theirs also work as well, except what they claim for up to -35C has never been fulfiled. I am not sure if they refer to ambient temperature or including windchill, but the fluid seems to freeze up when it is only like -17C out there when sprayed onto the windshield.

in the summer using tap water is fine. The only reason to use windsheild washer fluid is because in winter water freezes in the lines.

I use water in the summer whenever I run out of fluid from winter time. Come autumn I will go back to Fluid.

Thanks and I shall take a look there today! CT is cheapest right now at $2.49 for their -35C ones.

The past 2 falls, HD has them for 89 cents.. on a sat/sun. Usually stock up then.. I forgot to this year.. cheapest is 2.49 at Walmart..

Yeah, that was about the same price I paid when I got the two cases from Rona back in the Fall of 2006. I guess they had too much stock then when it was not even snowing. I recall ski resorts and ice fishing operators took a big hit last year until it finally snowed late January, 2007. This year we have had about 200CM of snow so far, and more snow is expected to drop before April arrives so I guess the fluid won't be on sale at all. If you can find a jug for $2 it is considered cheap already. If I see them for a dollar each again I will be going with my larger car this time and bring home 4 to 5 cases of them, for sure---in my dreams of course!:cheesygri

Isn't it kind of pointless to drive around looking for cheap washer fluid? You're going to save what, a dollar or two a jug? Factor in your time and the gas you're using and is it really worthwhile?

$1 washer fluid? would it be the same quality as $3.50 CT stuff.

I bought it once at Zellers, even bought oil for a buck ar Zellers. For the windsheild washer fluid, I didn't really notice much of a difference.

What I've herd mostly about Advil and your generic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is that you mostly pay for the name/brand and the research. That Advil and your generic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug is the same thing. Advil does the research and the generic brand just pays a royalty for the formula, thats why they sell it at a discount price. The generic brand only has to make it, thats all they have to do.

I know that its not exactly the same thing, like comparing apples and oranges. Its just the principle, that a similar thing may be going on there. You know they are just paying for the formula and thats it. Or they could just be mass producing the prodcut. I could totally be wrong.

well the first line would freeze in your car in the winter

the second link makes things look so difficult when you can get it for a few bucks.

LOL, this thread is funny. I love RFD, but what would you save? $10 or $20 a year? Not sure it's worth making a special trip for that kind of saving.

If it was there while you're buying other stuff, sure, but isn't your time worth more than that...

I used to buy the CT Teflon winter washer fluid.

It kept refreezing over or just didn't clean enough so I ended up using so much of it just to be able to see.

I switched over to RainX Winter fluid and have to use less of it than the CT brand.

In the end I spent a bit more to buy the RainX but I used it less b/c it worked well and I ended up saving more $$$.

I did the same...bought 2 cases when CT had a sale in Dec. A case of 4 for $10.37. Great stuff!

Have not seen $1 washer fluid for a LONG time

but recently I stay with Rain X, bought from last 4 for $10 PartSource promo
it works quite good, and I still have 2 jars left so more than enough for the winter

i use rain-x, i barely have to use any because once my windshield is coated, all the mucky grimey water will simply bead and wipe off with the wipers without additional washer fluid, or very little

Thanks guys, I will give Rain X a try to see the difference. The regular one at CT is $2.49 any way so I might as well go for Rain X. I have only heard good things about it.

Any good deals on winter washer fluid? I'm down to 1.5 jugs. I'm heading to Walmart this weekend and will check the prices out.

Costco often has attractive deals on the stuff.

Currently, Costco is selling a box of 4 windshield washer fluid jugs (3.78L each jug) for $8.99, so $2.25 each jug. It's the regular blue color fluid.

As near as I could find, it's 70% water and 30% methanol.

It's more for if you already have summer washer fluid in your reservoir and you don't want to pump it out to replace it with winter washer fluid. It's about $3 for a 350 ml bottle of washer "booster" fluid (i.e. turns summer into winter fluid) at CT whereas a 1L bottle of methyl hydrate is like $4 and it can also be used for gas line anti-freeze.

We're not exactly talking car transmission, here

And is it really worth buying the cheap stuff, save a few pennies (a dollar) in the process and wind up with grimy windshields?!

I know times are tough and all but don't you think this is pushing it bit much?

No kidding. I wouldn't want to have to stare at the number of jugs in my garage for years needed to make this value proposition worthwhile.

$1 per unit is really good. i don't think i've ever seen that price.

Not sure if this is available at other Rona locations. 8 jugs/customer, and there are 4 jugs in a carton.

Anyone know a good price for road salt? Thanks.

Shoppers Drug Mart has their 4L washer fluid for $1.49 tomorrow (Sat.) only and 50 cents more the rest of the week. Not the .99 cents in years past.

Another thumbs up for Rain-X Deicer washer fluid for the winter. It costs a bit more, but it's a thing of beauty when you don't even need to use wipers on the highway. Well, most of the time that is. And the cost difference is negligible. CT's bottom-of-the-deck washer fluid is $2.49 a bottle. Rain-X is $3.99. It's a $1.50 folks, this will barely get you coffee at Timmies. And yes, the Rain-X fluid is far superior to all the cheapo washer fluids. I use it exclusively in the summer and winter.

Seen in it Pharmacy2 in Newmarket today.
4L sells for 77 cents, provided that you spend at least $15 at the store. Not so hot, but if you're planning on some grocery/household shopping anyway - that would be a good deal!

http://images2b.snapfish.com/232323232%7Ffp5363%3A%3Enu%3D3333%3E%3B97%3E9%3C3% 3EWSNRCG%3D3239966%3A86%3B77nu0mrj

Update: turns out $15 spent at the store give you discount for only 1 jug of washer. If you want to buy 2 at $0.77 you have to spend $30 and so on.

will rain-x fix wiper chattering? My new car's wiper is giving me that annoying chattering sound. Also do I have to drain all the old wash fluid to use rain-x?

No and no. In my experience Rain-X actually makes wiper chattering worse (which is one reason I prefer Aquapel to Rain-X); however Rain-X makes it so your wipers are more effective and also makes it so you use them less, so the chattering may be less of an issue.

How old is the car in question? I'm assuming changing blades has not helped with the chattering issue? You may need to replace your wiper arms and/or springs in order to properly solve chattering. If by new car you mean brand new, then that kind of sucks, lol.

No you don't have to drain your old washer fluid, but it would help if it were as low as possible before filling with Rain-X fluid as that will keep the concentration of the additive high enough to be effective.
