View Full Version : Who else is sick of poker, particularly on sports channels?

For the life of me I don't understand why Sportsnet is showing poker. Poker is not a sport. I could be watching Senators or Canadiens (on top of the Canucks games), but instead I get a bunch of guys sitting around a table playing cards for hours on end. I rather watch paint dry! If sitting on your ass for 2 hours is a sport, then I'm world champion. I used to think watching pool was boring but at least those guys are standing up.

poker is fine sometimes.. but not during NHL/NBA games..

the only two shows that i don't mind are poker after dark and poker superstars. all those other random tournaments are just like.. wtf? i'd rather watch replays of sports highlights over and over again.

Poker just got commercialized, wherever there is money, businesses will follow it.
Ads for poker sites are legal in Canada!

I like watching poker, hate sports.

That being said I don't see a need to have it on a sports channel.

I enjoy watching it, but not more than hockey etc....and really how the hell is it a sport?

Every year when TSN shows the American Spelling Bee I ask myself the same question.

Yeah, Sportsnet is full of crap. It seems almost every other time I turn it on, it's poker. The other half is Connected, which is okay. Late night (after midnight), Sportsnet is poker, poker, and more poker. I prefer TSN's re-runs of amateur hockey games, or even women's hockey.

i don't mind it, but ya its getting pretty cheesy...tsn has those british poker games with hellmuth and the same players over and over...BS

they shud show LIVE matchups of the final tables at bigevents , or atleast have BIG turneys televised with only the poker greats, like hellmuth, that mouthy mike guy, phil laak, phil ivey, gus hansen, dan NEG, throw in sum hot chix like evelin Ng, connie clowen, sp, etc

as for the WPT, on citytv, thats like last years episode?

if they have CURRENT poker events then i'd watch it

Games = poker, bridge, cribbage, etc.

Get poker off my SPORTS channels, and show me some sports!

TV Poker became popular during the NHL Lockout back in 04-05, once the NHL came back...it was supposed to die. But nope, I guess people are STILL watching this.

They could at least make it strip poker and hold tournaments around Canada at various universities. That would begin to make up for the several million regional blackout messages these channels broadcast instead of actual programming.

I personally can't bother to watch Poker on TV because it becomes a bore. I had my little "Poker fiend" time where I was playing a little at school (don't anymore because I'm over it and don't have the time to because of school work; though when I did play at school I did gamble a little, but my combined winnings and losses probably break even, and never exceeded probably $20 on either side, plus I didn't play much or long) and online (got bored, and like playing at school, got over it), but that's over and done with. I don't mind having Poker being shown on TV, but I would MUCH prefer to have a lot less of it shown. Also, it's not even like it's relatively new half the time. The same old stuff is shown and being repeated.

I asked myself the same question when they were airing the national cheerleading championship!

I like the cheerleading championships (take out the guys). Pervy? Who cares, better than poker.

You'd think Rogers puts up more Raptors or NBA on regular cable to bring in customers. Nope, let's put everything on Raptors TV when there's a snowstorm and built-in audience killing for a game...poker from 2005 repeat.

(frustrated)

I fully agree with the OP. It is very very annoying when every sports channel is showing poker at the same time. I hate it when I get home at night, turn on the TV hoping to see highlights, and all three sports channels are showing poker.

Its only cool when Daniel Nagraneau (sp.) is on, or if its celebrity poker with some hot gal, always wearing low cut tops ! :cheesygri

Or when the host girl interviews the losers. Cause that girl is always hot!

Because ratings rule.

Pro hockey outside of 7-8 cold US cities is the equivalent of high school sports interest wise in the States.

But we're not in the States. TSN and Sportsnet are Canadian channels.

The most baffling thing is that they sell "highlights" of these poker games on DVD so people can watch the same game over and over again. Whee! :D

You know these shows arent all entertainment, if your really serious about poker you can actually learn a lot from the pros, and compare them to how you play and see what you can improve on. I know I have improved my game for sure.
Poker is not a sport in the traditional sense, but when you are in a tournament sitting for 8-10 hours, you better be damn well in shape both physical and mental as to keep focused. Just like basketball and hockey, if your not focused and not mentally in the game, you will suffer.

You'd probably be jealous of me in my situation too!

I'm a first year nursing student, with about 40+ girls in my class, maybe about 4 guys including me total!

Believe me, its pretty nice to be hanging around girls all the time! You get to see the brighter side of women that most guys just do not get the chance to observe or appreciate. Glorious!

Click on the drop box to see the selection of sports aired on Star Sports, which is the main Asian sports network.

http://www.espnstar.com/tvtimes/tvtimes_index.jsp

There's like 50 different sports aired on the network. When I'm watching commercials for the channel, you get an idea of the channel's progamme diversity, with ads ranging from football, yachting, basketball, wrestling, and Formula One.

It's embarrassing how North American networks have such a myopic view of sport programming. Thank god for internet streaming....
