If you had the chance to take a 1998 Honda Prelude hand me down... would you do it?
Keep in mind... the reciever has a G2, is in his early 20s, with no previous insurance.

I definitely would take it. If the car has been well-maintained and no accidents you are good to go.
Shop around for insurance. TD Meloche Monnex actually offers reasonable rates. But with the young man's age, the type of car and no previous insurance, I am thinking the rates might be pretty high.
If you can't take it, give it to me good buddy...thx!

Check if you can afford insurance? If yes, keep, if no, sell it?

haha yah... but i imagine getting raped on insurance since its a combo of
-young driver
-no expirience
-2 door HONDA sports car + asian.
Check if you can afford insurance? If yes, keep, if no, sell it?
its either.. shell out $5000 for a beater/first car.
or take a hand me down thats still pretty cool despite being a 1998, and paying out of my ass for insurance.

Ask any RFD if they will take a free car. You'd be crazy not to . Its a sweet ride. and 200,000 km is nothing.

As long as the car is in good running order and there is nothing wrong with it then why not. Good thing about hand me donws is that you never have to pay for whatever it is.
Plus since it is a hand me down the money you would spend on insurance is going to be pretty much the same if you were to buy the car off a used car lot.
So I look at it this way. For me to get a Honda either a civic or prelude it would run me aroung 6g's a year for insurance. To get a pretty decent civic or lude you need to spend a minimum of 4-6 thousand anyways. So there you are already spending a minimum of 10 thousand a year. Where as if you get the car for fee you only have to pay any licensing and registration fees as well as insurance.

get your drivers education certificate, and try to get your G ASAP. Then look for rates on kanetix.ca and only insure it 3rd party coverage. Should be reasonable enough for a free car.

obviously its a good deal. you could take it and Sell it for profit:lol:
But if you plan on driving it then seriously look at insurance rates and weather you can afford it. Remember its not only insurance but you should think of gas and even spare money for maintenance.
If you can afford it then go for it as it would also count as experience for insurance which can lead to cheaper rates. Also if you can why not go for your G. I'm sure it would help out on insurance rates.

Insurance in Ontario is crazy. It only costed me $1600/yr in Winnipeg, and now $1300/yr in Calgary. Being asian has nothing to do with your rate. My personal situation is probably not the norm though, being 28, male, no accident, no claim.
I do have a few speeding tickets, but I beleive they get dropped after 2yrs.
The demerit system works well in Winnipeg. If you've gained enough experience merit points you can get a max of 25% discount off the public rate.
200,000 isn't much really. My '01 Prelude is already at 150,000 and nothing has been done aside from the clutch, hub bearing, timing belts, tires, oil, rad fluid, brake fluid and brake pads. Regular maintenance items. Probably need to do the starter and alternator soon though.

Take it. Its a free car, all you need to worry about is insurance, gas, and maintenance. IF you don't drive too much, and light footed, you should be fine. At least you don't have to shell out the huge down payment or large payment if you were to buy a car.

You also might want to confirm that you won't have to pay tax on it. You can transfer vehicles between close family members tax free (see the tax exemptions in the link) however sibilings is not in their list. Might be something to check into, as it's taxed on what they think it's worth.

Even if it's not no tax, you only pay PST.
From the Black Book web site, a 1998 Honda Prelude SH with 200,000
Low: $2,731.00 High: $4,531.00
So if the Red Book from MTO UVIP is close to the Black Book, that's less than $220 for a free car.

I'd grab it; I had a '97 back quite a few years/cars ago, and it ran flawlessly until I sold it with 170k on it - only repair was rear hub bearings, done under warranty @ 120k; apparently Honda had extended the warranty on them because they were a known problem (I'm not really sure about that, but that's what they said and it was the only time I ever took it to the stealership).
