i debated between the two myself. a friend of mine has the S5, so i had tested it out.
they both have a lot of the same features and are quite similar.
of course the S5 has the bigger zoom, but that wasnt something i was looking for, and i didnt like the pop up flash.
i liked the size and feel of the A650 more, so thats what i bought, and i'm really happy that i did.
hightech

I'd actually recommend the A720IS. The manual controls and image quality is awesome. I had the A710 IS and LOVED the controls it had. Not too many point and shoot cameras for under $300 that offers Av controls.

I like the A650. Same sensor and lens as the (significantly) more expensive G9. Takes four AA batteries so longevity and flash recharge are both good. The flip-out LCD is nice as well. It's only missing the build and flash hotshoe.

Actually, it can (http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/A650.html). I have one of these on my G6. Excellent build quality.
