Brought one of our family cars in for an oil change today at CanTire. They recommended a transmission flush and an air filter replacement. I'm guessing they mean the engine air filter, maybe the cabin air filter too?

The car has about 60000 km on it, it's an 2002 Camry.

How much should each of these services cost?

Air filter, I'm thinking I might be able to do myself. Any particular brand / place to buy it that you guys would recommend?

Does it even need doing? Check the owner's manual. Don't rely on some guy at CT to tell you what your car needs.

I own a 2002 Camry LE V6 with 148,000 KM on it.

The transmission fluid (T-IV type) can last as much as 96,000 KM. I change the fluid every 40,000 km. Toyota recommends drain and fill service only. The cost for a Transmission fluid (complete fluid exchange) that places like Canadian Tire and Mr. Lube charge is about 2x that what the dealer charges. Also, I ONLY use original Toyota fluid. Many places have another type of fluid and then add an additive to make it T-IV compliant. I prefer using the original fluid as the viscosity's differ with Toyota vs. others.

The engine air filter also gets changed on the "need to do basis". I get about 45,000 KM before I swap the filter. Generally, the Lube guy just takes the filter out, blows some air to get rid of the stuff and it if looks reasonably clean, I just use it.

Toyota also has a Cabin Air Filter (located behind your glove box) that gets changed every 16,000 km. All you need to go to get at it is unscrew the glove box bracket on the right side of the box, press the release on the back of the box and the glove comes right down. You then see a white colour bracket, that slides out and has access to the filter.

I only use ORIGINAL Toyota fluids and filters. The cabin air filter I can get from Parts Source since they sell it for $12 cheaper then dealer, and it is the EXACT same thing (micron air filter).

Don't take your car to CT. I had my Caravan's tranny fluid changed and they stripped one of the tranny pan bolts, screwed in over-sized one, and now it is leaking slowly. I went back several times, but they won't resolve the issue, claiming that leak wasn't present after they "fixed" it. I found a great independent mechanic since who does much better job at less price/hour and honest to boot.

Cabin filter needs changing every 16k on Camry? Wow, my TL needs changing every 50K.

^^^

Yeah really, 16,000 is SUPER quick for a cabin filter, my Mazda is once every 2ish years/50,000km.

They say 6 months or 16,000 km is what the manuals say. The cabin filters used to be pretty good back in 02 to 04, but they redesigned it from a thick fabric type to a cheap paper one. The cost did not get cheaper, just the quality.

Agreed. At 60,000km you really don't need to change the fluid, however you may if you wish. If you do, you don't need to flush the trans at that mileage either--just drop the pan, change the filter and refill it. As an aside, never let anyone "reverse flush" your transmission as it's a bad idea.
