View Full Version : Why do people pay $50-$60 for broken X360?

Over the last week I have noticed people paying $50 to $60 for dead X360s on ebay. For example
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300205063921
Watch where the price goes.
My question - why pay that much for just the broken box? I thought the DVD drive is married to the motherboard and you can't swap like with the old XBox.

You can actually use old drives for replacements for other drives. People whom have flashed there drives may covet some older models, like the Samsung MS25/28, whereas some people may enjoy the new BenQ's for their relative ease of flashing. It's not an easy process, but you can "spoof" the drive into thinking it's another, so your system will run it without issues.
Furthermore, some sellers may be totally unaware of Microsoft's normally far extended manufacturer warranties. Asides from that, the cases, etc. can also be used for replacement, repair, etc. Finally, some people just might take it as a hobby to spend their time repairing something and getting a good deal out in the process.

I thought that you can't fix RROD boxes.
I thought the RROD came from the GPU separating from the mobo

It's from the heat. With a relatively simple fix, you can do the penny trick (check youtube) to "buffer" the heatsink and keep the mobo from warping too much. Plus people apply better thermal paste as well to assist. If I had time, I'd probably buy up some RRoD'ed to fix up.

Most xbox problems can be fixed easily. RROD problem can usually be fixed temporarily by xclamp replacement, and near permantly by a GPU reflow which if you don't have the equipment to do it yourself, you can get it done for $50 from various places. So basically for $100 you can get a backup xbox, useful for people who has banned consoles or as a 2nd console (one mod, one not for online play).

The seller is from Vaughn too. The XBOXs are probably from the repair centre there and it's the ones they couldn't fix.

I tried to fix one, x-clamp replacement, penny fix... Reading up on xbox-scene, trying several combination of washers and finally overheating...
It turned out to be one huge waste of time and quickly became a obsession lol
I managed to get it to boot but it it would freeze up after 10 minutes of gaming.

Well if you're fixing it purely to get an xbox for $60 bones, I'd advise you against it, since if in the chance that it's unfixable, you'd probably end up quite disappointed. However, if this sort of tinkering is a hobby of yours, and you're prepared to go to work at it purely for the sake of interest, I'd say go for it. If you fix one, congrats. you just got a $400 console for the price of a game. If you don't, well at least I hope you had fun taking a saw and drill to the thing and seeing what you can do with it. :D In any case good luck to ya!

That's true. For $60, I can see this as fun project for even some of my friends. I was told my XBOX support that some 360s can't be repaired but 90% of the time most CSRs at any place have no idea what they're talking about so...

There is no 100% permenant fix, and even after the penny fix, reflowing, new heatsinks, new xclamp, thermal paste, etc it will still die eventually. These fixes only prolong the inevitable death that all 360's will suffer.

indeed, every electronics will suffer of death (sooner or later)
EDIT:
that may be good in some point, what's the better argument to tell your wife: Hey honey, it's broken, I need a new one :)

Yes, they go on to a better place called xbox heaven, thats what your parents should tell you to help you overcome the grief. But in reality they are melted and used for future electronic products Hua hua hua, my new shiny new hdmi 360 was probably made from the recycled innards of some poor bastards atari back in the 80s.

For 60 bones, I think half the fun is doing to it what you can't/are too scared to do to a console you bought for $400. :D There's a picture around here somewhere that has a 360 with a perfect circle cut into it at the center, which was simply hilarious. All else aside, you can tear it open, mess around with the insides, half-melt the case with a blowtorch and rig a $3 tape deck inside that will constantly play tears in heaven whenever you press the power switch. It'd be hilarious, and it'd be modern art. :D You wouldn't have gotten the console to work for $60, but you know what, you'd have had the pleasure of thoroughly mess around with its insides for the sake of fun. And isn't fun what it's all about in the end?

some people get an RROD and simply forget about warranty services n such (registerin/3 years on RROD), so if you wanted to take a chance, u could buy it for $50, send it in for repair, complain till u get a new one

i've bought a rrod console/20hd/wires and power brick for 60$.. lemme know where i can find more for this price since i made some money on it. i see rrod consoles sell for wayy more than 60$, furthermore, i sold one with a few extras for close to 300% profit. so please send some links because the prices u are saying is not common but wicked deals. i know a lot of people believe that rrod means the end of their xbox360 so they will sell for anything, but that was before rrod prices went up as people found out most can be fixed.

Kind of off topic but slightly related... would anyone happen to know how much a *working* xbox 360 (console only, no cables or anything) would/could go for? Got one I'm thinking of selling but not sure how much I could get for it.
