Tune in to CTV for their annual used car lot investigation.
THIS is why you get a proper Carproof report (not a lesser Carfax), why you get a proper used car inspection, and why you do your homework.
APA.ca partnered with W-Five for the report.

You watching it is preaching to the choir. We need the twits in the Carfax thread to watch it.

A few observations from the show:
- An average car is driven about 15-20K a year. If I look for a used car, and I find a 3 year old car with 20K on it, I would be skeptical.
- It pays to do your homework. Always get the vehicle inspected by a mechanic you are comfortable with, and get a car proof.
- If the vehicle mileage checks out with car proof, visit the dealership and try to get the maintenance history. Chances are the guy who has a 3 year old car with low mileage has full manufacture warranty, and seeing the dealer is more likely.
- Always insist on getting the Used Car Kit (seller by law has to provide this kit if he is not a dealer).
Overall a very interesting (and scary) show.
I loved the part when the Sikh guy tells the W5 guy "The surdar has left the country and gone back to India." I almost fell off my chair in laughter when I heard that.

+1
would be really skeptical about 3year/20km.
eg.
i drive my car every single day to work/out, the car is 6.4 years old and it has 67k. (average 30km a day )
so unless the car is a rare/sports car(&/or winter stored) dont even think about touching it.
any car that sits/stand idle for more than a couple of days will have all sorts of issues.(suspension, rims/tires, brake parts, hub-bearings, stale fluids)
i also have all maintenance records from dealer.
if u buy a car with no history of recorded maintenance, chances are it was brought up in a chop'shop or if the person is that irresponsible to not keep any records then image the condition of the car. what are they hiding from u.
It may seem fine if people personally maintain their cars(self mechanic) but that could also turn out to be alot worse, since not everyone is so gifted with their hands(but not all know so). plus they should still have records of items purchased/replaced.
I agree with what you said, but these things come to mind:
- I know some senior citizens rarely drive their cars so low mileage is possible. These same people generally keep meticulous records and have no issue showing you their service history.
- Some people are financially strapped so they can just afford $5K for a used car. Those people I think it is very important to do the carproof, or else it could prove a very costly purchase.
The last used car I purchased was when I was in college. I saw an ad in the Auto Trade for a 6 year old Dodge Spirit with 58,000 KM on it. So I took a drive up to Uxbridge, and went to the dealer, and they showed me the car, and the records of this guy who changed his oil every 3,500 km and the car was in pristine condition (former owner was a Senior Citizen who just wanted to get a bigger car). I didn't know about Carproof back in the 90's and the car turned out to be pretty good (well for a college student).

Sad but I like to tell the truth to RFD.. After watching the episode i used carproof and found 2 insurance records against my car :( ( 2003 Accord bought on Aug 2007) .. one for $700 and other for $1500. Now the confusion part is neither CARFAX or Ontario Used Vehicle Information Package didnt have that information.
I immediatley talked to friend of mine and his verdict is since both claim amounts seems low, it might be a "cosmatic damage only"
So Carfax got all the other records ( Service, Ownership Renewl) except these two small accidents.
So the conclusion is Carproof has access to Insurance Reports and Records while Carfax dont !!!

senior citizens, people who take the subway/carpool to work, and just people who generally don't drive too much don't put that much mileage on their cars. I would not be afraid to buy a car with very low mileage for the age, just do your research beforehand.

$700 most likely just very minor accident nothing to worry about because last year my TSX got hit from the back (an old man was backing up at the parking lot <5km/h) and cracked the rear bumper. As far as i remember from the bill of sale the bumper itself costed around $500 something almost 600 and the paint job was around $200

Looked like the B.C. guys were Persian, others eastern european, Biggs most likely from Guyana or Trinidad, and ofcourse the Indian Sikh guy without whom the show would have no amusement value.
Simple message from this show...be extra vigilant if a deal seems really good.
Especially on popular makes such as Hondas and Toyotas.

you ignorant fool. They aren't BROWN, they're Iranian. A lot of used car dealers seem to have an Iranian background HOWEVER, this doesn't prove causality that Iranians screw people over....

I would be good if they did a similar piece on used cars from proper dealers like Honda or Mazda or Ford etc. Also on the so-called good places like Autopark where they supposedly have a no-haggle policy on used cars.
Cheers

All the dealers in that video seemed fairly small. I wonder why they didn't check out any of those big dealers like Ford, Toyota, Honda, GM etc. Maybe they are more accountable?

I dunno, but the Iranian guys I have dealt with (auto shops, home repairs) always try to sneak something by. Not saying, they are the only guys that do it, I just get my radar peaked when I get some guy telling me "Hey brother! How are you doing?" (its a brown people inside joke).

Well they may be all "brown" now but this sort of crap has been going on in the used car business since the first new car back in 1907 or thereabout hit the first "used car lot" in 1910 and every decade since and it wasn't "brown" people doing it, it was white people to white people. Skin color has nothing to do with it..it's the nature of the biz.

Shows your level of intelligence and ignorance. The shady dealers are of darker complexion so their automatically labelled brown.
Wonder why they didn’t show any of the passing places. I would love to see who the honest dealers were.

I just recently sold 9 year old car with 60k km on it. There was just one owner of this car (my wife) and that was true milage. For the last 5 year that car was used to drive just to GO station that is about 1.5km away from home. We had to make an extra trip every few weeks just to make sure that oil in the car gets hot enough (recommended by dealer). So yes, there are cars with low mileage - not everybody drives a lot!

Agreed, my wife only puts about 10K km on her car per year....you can't assume that all low km cars are scams because that simply isn't the case. Do your homework and you should be okay.

it's not biased...it gives the record of fail and pass at the end.
It just chooses to show you the failed cases. I could care less about the ones that passed cause they don't teach the consumers anything.
