Hey guys,
I'm going to give a bit of background info on the unit before anything else:
I got a PS3 40gb from EBgames about 1.5 weeks ago, and I still have the receipt.
About week ago while re-arranging some furniture in the house, while rewiring my electrics I placed my ps3 on my bed to get it out the way so I could do my stuff.
I unknowingly covered the ps3 with my blanket and just let it sit until I was finished moving.
While I was taking a break, I decided to sit on my bed and forgetting that the ps3 was hidden under the blanket I actually sat on it :(
I'm not heavy at all, and my arse managed to slip off the top of the Ps3 as the full weight of my body was coming down (thank god for the curved yet slippery surface of the ps3) however I do still think I put a fair amount of pressure on the surface of the unit, even if it was for a split second.
Anyways, all was fine with the unit (checked it thoroughly for any cosmetic damages) until yesterday night.
I noticed that the unit was making sounds while gaming, and then it freezed on me a couple of times (about 4 over the span of an hour?).
This morning when I turned on the Ps3, instead of seeing the sony corporation and the familiar ps3 opening sounds, I was greeted with a jagged, fuzzy version of the playstation interface.
It just flickers back and forth, and I'm able to get to the interface, but unable to do anything else afterwards. I've tried switching tv's, switching controllers, power outlets, pretty much everything that I could think of and nothing works.
Did I damage it by sitting on it even if it was for a split second? I don't see how the insides of the ps3 can be damaged if I could not detect any cosmetic damages and I had not dropped the unit (only pressure on top).
Anyways, what should I do? or am I royally screwed up the arse.

I want to leave that as my last option, because I believe in karma and I don't think that is covered under their warranty.
Is there anything else I can do before I go to that option?

i think your only option is to send it sony. Just tell them that the unit froze and when you turned it back on, the whole screen got fuzzy and the picture isn't working.
if you tell them you sat on it, they probably won't take it back.

Ok...yea It's not turning on anymore.
I guess I'm going to have to try sending it back to sony and hope they don't question on what really happened.

Since it's only 1.5 weeks old, can you not just get it exchanged at EB? Better option than the hassle of sending it to sony...

Well it may only be a conincidence that its busted now cause the PS3 is like a damn tank so im not really sure if you could have done too much damage from your description unless your a heavy ass guy. That being said any damage would also have been external as well. It MAY be that this is just bumb luck, and infact I would suggest sending it to sony. If it is messed up by wieght they will be able to tell as supports and damage inside will be obvious but if its not your fault then they will fix it. Honestly it sounds like back luck to me but you are the one that needs to have a clear conscience. I personally believe in karma too... and karma can be a real *****.

Call them about what? I'll have to lie anyways in order to get anything fixed so theres no point. I already called earlier on, and they said to send it in so they can see what is wrong.

Already tried that, Ebgames only exchanges or refunds if it isn't opened and sealed. If you've opened it, or if its past the 30 days mark, they just redirect you to the manufacturer.
Guess I'm out of luck eh.

They should have 30 day return policy for anything of theirs that breaks...I can't believe that they'd direct you to Sony after 10 days.

So EB Games changed their policy?
Unless you told them what really happened I can understand why they wouldn't but you should be able to Exchange/Return it within 30 days.

Unless you buy their extended warranties they said they woudln't be able to do anything.
Ebgames are just distributors. They don't make the systems, and as distributors they only help companies like Sony or MS give their products to the masses through stores.
Even if I were to give the ps3 back to them, they would have to send it back to sony anyways as a defective. Now, they DO do that for you only if you've bought the extended warranty on the unit, otherwise any problems you have, you alone will have to send it back to sony.
The 30 days exchange/refund policy for systems and 15 days for smaller items and games only applies to sealed/unopened items (like it says on the back of the receipt.
However I did talk to the Ebgames store I bought it at and after some pleading, they told me to bring it in tomorrow and they would have a look at it in person and that they "might" be able to help me out.
Here's to hoping that goes well

To answer your original question: Yes - you most likely caused internal damage despite not causing cosmetic/external damage.
The shell of the PS3 is supposed to be the toughest part of the PS3.. You would have a very hard time breaking the shell without some kind of directed impact rather than the distributed, even weight you applied when you sat on it.
There are so many components so tightly packed in with so little clearance that even a half-inch of flex would most likely make a component touch another that it's not supposed.
Sorry - you broke it. But, as it's only 1.5 weeks old, Sony will have no problem writing it up as a simple factory defect ;)

What happens if you lose your PS3 receipt, and wish to return a unit to Sony? 12 months, warranty, right? I don't even think the 80gb PS3 has been out for 12 months, so if I didn't supply a receipt, it's common sense, right?

It all depends, some companies will request for a receipt to show proof that you had brought the unit and that it was not stolen.
I once brought a sony cd player and it had a standard one year warranty period on it. The unit had a sticker which showed what was the date of manufacture and YET Sony asked for a receipt when i argued that it wasnt even past one year as the unit was released in the market for a few months. They wouldnt do anything for me. I eventually found the receipt.

Well I sent my PS3 to sony for repairs. I hope they're able to fix it or replace it.
Will update later.
