If I use a wireless adapter on my XBox 360 to connect to my home network, will I get more latency than using a wired connection? Also, I have COD4 on my PS3...can I play with my friends who have the XBox version or do I need to buy a copy for my XBox too?

No, you cannot play xbox with ps3 versions of the game. Both consoles use completely different networks.
As for going wireless, it will be a slight bit slower, but will you notice the difference, probably not. You may as well go wired if you're close enough to the router so you dont have to buy the $90 wireless adapter.

When I got my 360 I had the same question running through the back of my head.
Using the 360 wireless adapter will NOT make you get more latency. All three a/b/g are supported by the adapter and although some people will argue that there is; anything past "g" feels pretty much the same as a normal wired ethernet connection.
The worst case scenario: dropped connection, I haven't had any so far, but I know with cheap wireless devices, it can happen quite often. Although I do (not want) to doubt the quality of an adapter that I overpaid for.
Not sure if COD4 is cross-platform, somebody else will have to answer that question for ya.

the only cross-platform games you'll see would be between PC and 360. i think Shadowrun is the only one so far

Personally I like having a wired connection, I just feel like its faster and more secure. The difference is probably negligible though.

I used wired for a while, before I used wireless. The bottom line is: If you can run a wire to your xbox, without tripping over it, do it.

It might be paranoia speaking, but I found a wire generally gave me a better connection than wireless, but then again the difference might simply be that my wireless router is on the second floor of my house and the 360 is in the basement. Go wired if you can and if you don't mind having an extra line - it'll save you money and I *think* it'll give you a better connection.
