Price difference of these two is like double and I noticed the main difference is that 850/870 both have IS while 1000 doesnt.

Is that a feature that is worth the price difference or will I be OK with just the SD1000? Thanks

You want IS it makes a huge difference! unless you have steady hands! smaller P&S cameras tend to notice more shaking. thus IS will be recommended

The SD850 has a longer lens. 35-140mm versus 35-105mm. They take different batteries.

After owning a number of Canon cameras with IS lenses (S3 IS, A710 IS, and currently the 850 IS), I would NEVER go back to a non IS lens again. IS lenses gives you the best images without camera shake, and lets loose on the creativity factor.

Even when I look at SLR lenses, I pay the $$ for image stabilization.
