I hope this isn't a fiery topic, but I'm thinking of getting my baby into modelling, ie. catalogues, commercials, etc. as a hobby or something new to explore. This isn't about living through my kids or getting them into those weird kiddie pageants. Does anyone have any helpful information I can use such as where to start, who to talk to? I have no idea what's involved but would like to research it out.

My wife was at a Movies for Mommies near us and was asked if we wanted to have our daughter do this.
We talked about it and decided to try it out and so far she has done 4 shoots. It is a very laided back kind of thing so far.

Just a couple things to consider though.

Every parent thinks their baby is the cutest in the world. Do not set yourself up for disappointment. Our neighbour decided to seek out a modeling contact because they felt their daughter who is a month older than ours was just as cute, if not cuter. They were pretty devastated when they were told the 3 companies they contacted were not interested in their baby.

Different babies have different looks, and different companies are looking for different looks. you never know what will happen, but you have to be prepared for rejection.

The company we are with told us that they have never once accepted a solicitation from a client. Every single person who has come to them wanting to model, they have not used. It is just that the babies are just usually not appropriate for one reason or another.

I don't have a lot of experience, but thats just my opinion.

lol, I don't like to lie. When some people say aaawwww, your baby is so cute when it's ugly. Me, I just don't comment. :lol: I don't say "No comment", I just stay changes topics.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily say that. Maybe it is just the company we have dealt with that does not work with walk ins. Some might.

I guess more what I was getting at was just be prepared when you go in. Not all babies have the look needed for a specific company. Don't get discouraged or insulted just because it does not work out.

Our neighbours were not prepared. They looked at their baby, thought it was the cutest in the world (what parent doesn't) and were devastated when someone told them they were not going to be a model.

Yeah, I'm pretty realistic about my kid's looks even though of course to me there isn't another one out there as beautiful as my own. :) But I have looked at kids and done that "gag" face behind their parents' backs and always wondered if anyone's ever done that to me. Hah!

A good friend of our familys used to be very big in the modelling world, had the biggest agency in Canada for 15yrs. Anywayz, when our daughter was about 12mths, we asked him about this and he was very hesitant. He said much the same thing as was said above, that every parent thinks theirs is a cutie and should be a model.

I used to be a child modelling agent in Toronto with one of the biggest agencies. We had clients like Sears, Zellers, etc and a few commercials. Most parents are envisioning GAP billboards, but the reality is for local agencies, it's mostly flyer work unless your baby was scouted for a specific ad campaign for a major advertising company. The pay is minimal for general work. It was about $40 - $75 for each session (minus the 10% commission) which was usually about 2-3hrs of work. You definitely won't get rich living off your baby's modelling career unless he/she gets big campaigns.

Yes, every parent thinks their baby is the cutest. Some get mad at the agent when their kids don't get work. It is up to the photographer who gets used or not. Sometimes they take the same picture with different babies and in the end the advertiser decides which one they want to use. "Ethnic" babies tended to be more in demand because they want to represent the population and because there tended to be less baby models who were not Caucasian.

Personally, though my daughter is super cute, I wouldn't subject her to those tiring days with people poking and prodding her for $40, but it's really up to each parent to decide what's suitable for their baby.
