View Full Version : Zellers 50% off all head phones
MrBobby
Mar 1st, 2008, 03:58 PM
I saw in their flyer that they had 50% off all head phones this week, March 1st to 7th, and went to see their selection. They had a fair selection and i ended up picking up a pair of creative ep-630's for $20(reg $39.99) which I thought was a pretty good deal considering they are $49.99 at best buy. They also had JVC marshmallows for $12.50(reg $24.99) which some people also like for cheep but still decent in-ear buds. :)

the marshmallows are ear bud earphones and the gumys are not.
the gumys reg price is usually no more than 15$.

NCIX surprise spcls had'em for ~$15 AR once, ... and i believe another time for ~$10 AR

Many thanks, Oshiboshi. Amazing deal, just ordered another set. Totally happy with the 630's, having bought them from BB during that $15 deal they had a while back. My only regret was that I didn't pick up a 2nd set at that time. IMO, best bang for the buck for decent quality buds. I believe I know the difference, owning several high-end buds and phones.

While I can't say anything about the ep630's, I think the Philips n37's are fake or at least they don't exist as a product from Philips. I can't find any information on them that's not part of zuneone.net.

I'm quite positive those are not authentic, at least in the sense that it didn't go through the official distribution process.
I've seen Zuneone's eBay account selling these.
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZzuneone
Why would they be in plastic bags? There are only 2 kinds of EP-630 packages, the retail package, and the Dell OEM package which comes in a black box. Neither of them has plastic bags inside. So why would either the Creative Factory or him take these out of their original package and put them in plastic bags?
Now, I remember reading somewhere these supposedly "fake" ep-630s came from the same factory in China, and some people just took them directly from the factory and sold them illegally to north America. The fancy retail package probably costs as much as the earphones themselves.
So you might have gotten a good deal after all, since the sound quality should be the same, but you never know

$20 isn't bad. I got my pair from Best Buy during their deals of the day thing back in November of last year. MJM mentioned it already. They were actually $12.99 at the time. Shipping was another $1.99 and add 14% sales tax, it came up to $17.08 shipped for legit ones.

How do you mod the Marshmallows?
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/jvc-fx33-mod-223642/
Basically, take off the foam tips (easy to do). Then you can either:
1. Use a needle to enlarge the existing hole in the paper filter. I didn't do it this way, so I don't know how it sounds, but it's supposedly good.
OR
2. You can remove the paper filter itself by using small pliers or something. The guy in that topic says to remove the gray rubber tubes, but I found that nearly impossible and unnecessary anyways. Then, stuff a bit of foam into the tube area. He says to use some foam from the earpads of some old headphones, but I found that snipping off two small pieces from the corner of a scrubbing kitchen sponge works well too.
Then put the foam tips on again and listen to some music!
It only took me a few minutes to do and the improvement WAS very significant. Before the mod, it's a bit worse than the EP-630, but it has a useful slider to compensate by preventing headphone cord tangle! :D

this is what you are looking for....
some audiophile from head-fi said after the mod the marshmallow blow any sub $100 earbud. Some even claim that after the mod they like it better than the Shure e4c but not to all.
Maybe quality depend on how you mod and stuff... but one thing most people agree is after the Kramer mod, the sound did improve alot

better than the KSC75?
The ksc 75/35/50/etc don't fit my ears properly- though if you're wondering, so no I don't like them.
Yes, the ksc 75 are known for their sound, but the thing is... with portables I usually take them outside, so there's lots of environmental sounds that really intrude on your listening experience whether it be jogging in the gym or studying in the library (which does get loud somehow) so I don't really see the point of getting good portables that have absolutely 0 noise isolation. With canalphones like the marshmallows, outside noise is much quieter and you get an amazing listening experience.
If I wanted open headphones that let all the sound in, I would use it for home, and if I was such an audiophile to want a good listening experience I wouldn't get such a cheap pair even though the ksc 75 are probably amazing for the price sound-wise if they fit you. I would get a good pair of full-sized headphones.
The ksc 75 are for those who jog outside and don't want to get by a car I guess, but if you live in a city, I'm sure you know how loud the environment is.
Oh yeah, LanEvoVII, did you actually mod your marshmallows? Because your description of them sounds kind of like what I would say about them pre-mod - bassy (like the ep-630). On the other hand though, most people mod them because the mids/highs are recessed, not ear-piercing :S

I have these and I find them too bulky and heavy on the ears after 15-20 minutes of listening so I take them off, I used them at work. The other problem with them is that the seem to break quite easily, I am on my second pair so I just taped them. The sound is good though and the price you got is very good as well, I believe I paid around 20 from tigerdirect once and 30 from BB about a year ago. I didn't see any ear buds that i'd consider -GOOD- there, but they did have a ton of cheap sony earbuds like the ones you linked. As well the Gummys had a 9.98 tag on them (down from $15) which i'm assuming would ring up at $5.

i got those as well for $14.10 with tax at the Centerpoint Zellers because they didnt have any marshmallows/ep-630's. just a whole lot of gummy's and some of these v150's, and also some coby brand? And very little Philips clip-ons..
i have to turn my mp3 player almost to the max to get the same volume level as my old marshmallows. they sound fine, but i know what you mean about feeling the bulkiness after a while. ive never bought a set like this before, so maybe i need to get used to it. cable is loong, i still have it wrapped up as it came in the package.
i heard about that breaking problem too. can you tell me where it breaks so that i can just tape it before it happens? i bet it's where you can twist the cup from side to side. it feels pretty flimsy doing that.

The MDR-V150s are probably good enough for those who want decent sounding headphones rather than earphones....they are great for winter as they cover majority of your ears and are cupped nicely with the leather fabric.
Although, the major issue with these headphones is the construction. I'm on my second pair after finally getting rid of the first ones. They do crack just above the earcups where you can increase/decrease the size of the headphone. This usually happens though because rather than using two hands to take them off, we use only one hand and pull on one cup causing the other side to crack.
Pros:
-Sound quality
-Good for winter
-Nicely priced (specially for $15 @ Zellers w/ 50% discount)
Cons:
-Construction, will eventually break on the earband if flexed many times
-Leather inserts in the cup will tether (normal use)
-Very long cable, need to wrap some of the cord on the ipod or use a rubberband

Picked up a pair of Creative ep-630s. Got the last one at Weber Zellars in Waterloo. Note: no SPC discount on electronics :(
Do you remember if there was any left at the Conestoga Zellers? Thanks

Thanx all. Yes, you are right, after about 15min of using them, my ears were feeling warm ! I bet they are great for the winter !
The only thing I dislike for now is I find it to be too tight. Maybe its new or it has to be this tight or else it would be loose?
Cracking issue sounds like a evantual fact then. I'll try to be careful as possible, I guess $15 bucks, what can a guy ask for.
I also bought from when Radio Shack had its closing sale the Panasonic ON EAR ones. It is much lighter, but the sound quality is not as good as these Sony DJ's.
I use those Panasonic's at work, because I don't really care much for them (incase the sanitation staff steals them from my computer).

Hi,
Does Zellers have any regular ear buds (not in-canal) that are on sale?
I had a pair of Sony ear buds that came with my mp3 player and after using it for under a year one ear bud doesn't work. I wonder if its the wire being coiled up each day after use.
The Sony buds were like these but had blue color instead of silver:

I'm looking for JVC, Panasonic, Sony or other good ear buds (not in-canal) at Zellers:
JVC Gumy Earbud Headphones (HA-F130-A)- Blue

Yes, I definitely saw some in ear (not inside canal) Sony ear buds on sale. If i remember correctly, it was very close to the Sony ones you linked to above.
I went to the Centerpoint Mall Zellers. (Steeles & Yonge). They had quite a few selection left. The big, expensive, "good" ones are all gone.

DEFINITELY FAKE! The position of the dent in the metal ring is in the middle. Real EP630s have the dent near the back

I have 2 sets of ep630s (purchased about 8 months apart), and I can confirm this (right in near the back).

My brother has a crack abover the blue wavy line. It's on the part where the expansion with the numbers actually come out. It cracked on the thin side so what happens now is that one ear side that has the crack won't hold still or won't clip in place when you expand or contract it so it just falls out completely.

here's an idea, try some thermal paste adhesive. Since that thing dries up permanent it might work as cement. You could probably just marker over it after. Becareful not to get the earpiece sealed in place. Also becareful not to get too much adhesive clogging the whole or else you won't get the earpiece to fit inside the smaller socket.
I don't know if this will really work it's just an idea, but I'm gonna try this on a broken heatsink retention plastic too when I find some time.

I PM ed the Web Only price from Best Buys site at FS Dundas&Yonge and the Sales person beat the price 110% and also made a mistake with the calculation and I paid 7.99+Tax for each headphone, I bought two of them :)
