Apparently this weekend Sears has the Die Hard 3/4 HP belt drive garage door opener for $229 plus tax from reg price $399. Posted by RRknight on a diff. site, so I though I would share this info, hope he doesn't mind :)
In-Store only, it's still showing $399 online.
http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000XS5ZEU/002-3847363-3353642?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core
EDIT 1: The Sears Craftsman garage opener is currently on sale for $279.99 plus there is an online coupon for $20 off $100 941612795
(not sure when it expires) so the opener will be only $259.99 plus tax online.
EDIT 2: New Sears online coupon for $25 off is available 941612149.
So the garage opener will cost only $274.99. Currently on sale for $299.99http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000XS5ZEU/002-3847363-3353642?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core

just called in 'sauga, lady told me this item number is not the same one which is on sale for 229.99 and unavailable online. The difference between the two is the online one for 399.99 has a backup batter (which you can see on their page) whereas the cheaper one doesn't.
Still going to pickup the cheaper one, don't need a backup battery..

Just called the Brampton Sears to confirm the price of $229 & the sale is ending tomorrow (Sunday) for the opener in the link above. Also was told by the sales rep. that this same unit will be on sale on March 15 & 16 but for $329, so $100 more.
So this indeed is a hot deal if you need one :!:

We went to sears today and asked to scan the price for the unit and it came up as $229, so I took 2 right away. I was also able to get 2 $10 coupon to make it $219 each. We went to the Oakville mall sears and now they only have one left.

That's great, you can buy it & just hold on to it even if the house is not ready yet, but you save quite a bit.
The lowest price I have seen for a belt drive opener was around $269, so this is a great price for 3/4HP, lowest I have even seen!

Thanks OP! There are lots of units at the downtown Ottawa Sears.
I think that the third poster received some incorrect information. The unit that I bought for $229 was the unit with the back-up battery. I compared the $229 unit and the $449 unit (http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000V4NRV4/sr=1-2/qid=1204492052/ref=sr_1_2/102-6624259-9236115?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=16361881) at the store. AFAICT, the only differences between the two is that the $229 unit has a back-up battery while the $449 unit does not have the battery, but has a garage door monitor that warns you if someone is breaking into your garage.
Unless I'm wrong, the control console of the $229 unit looks better. It has an LCD display while the $449 unit has no display.

This model looks like it can take a battery in case of a power failure (enlarge the photo to see). One word of advice for anyone, if you don't want to ever replace this again or have a very "high traffic" garage, get the 3/4 horse power version. You'll be glad you did.

Beware, I bought a DC w/ battery backup (3/4 horsepower), no one told me it's half as fast!
It's much slower than the regular, but I already installed it and stuck with it. Don't go DC unless you don't mind waiting longer for it to open, or clicking it way before you get to the door.

Since its only meant to be a backup, isn't half speed sufficient? Bear in mind most garage door openers don't have or need a backup...
Thanks for the post that this deal is back. I'm sure in deepest darkest January when the snow is flying, this will seem like a really good investment.

Hi all,
My house has a two-door garage. I just ordered the door opener as described in this thread. I am planning on ordering another CRAFTMAN opener but not the same model. I am wondering if there will be difficulties linking them together so that I can open/operate both opener with the same remote?
The reason for not buying two of the same model is that I will be using only one door out of the two frequently, I will install the one just ordered on that door as it is quieter model. For the other door, I plan on buying another door opener on sales at Sears as well at $199 (1/2 HP, chained). http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000FO9FAC/sr=1-0/qid=1218158888/ref=sr_1_0/002-3425920-6597652?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=397011011

I am wondering how difficult it is to self install those garage door openers and to link them together.... Are all instructions included in the boxes? How long does it take for a single person to install one opener?
Appreciate all your inputs.

I think Craftsman openers are manufactured by chamberlain (http://www.chamberlain.com/corporate/en-us), so different models are remote interoperable (will operate even Chamberlain openers from Home Depot).
A rough check is if the picture of the remotes from the two models look exactly the same.
Are these units really that quiet? Might as well get two of the cheaper units.
Not too hard to install if you are reasonably handy.

So I installed 2 of these craftsman gdo, and I love them. They are so quiet and have lots of programmable functions/features. I had to install it myself, so it was very exhausting and it took forever to install the first one, but the second one was a lot faster. Highly recommended gdo.

Just a couple questions because I am planning to install myself that GDO.
Was it the first GDO you installed? Did you install it alone? How long did it take you? Was it hard or quite straightforward following only the instructions given in the installation manual? Was it hard to program the remotes in order to be able to operate both GDOs using a single remote?
Thanks!

I have installed a GDO before, but it was about 18 yrs ago.
It is not that difficult, just time consuming and laborous for one person to do. Plus I had to take apart my old one. It wasn't hard but just got the garage all cluttered with 4 GDO's around. The instruction manual is excellent and very well written. Good job Craftsman !!!
There are some tips that may help you install your GDO.
It helps to have a tall step ladder. I used a 8 foot step ladder and boxes to support the motor while bolting down the GDO to brackets and metal straps.
They only supply you with 2 hanging brackets for mounting onto the ceiling. You need 2 more to act as your anchor on the ceiling. Go to Home Depot and get 2 larger angled brackets and use those to mount onto the ceilings. Then use the 2 they provide you as your vertical hanging support arms. I prefer to use 4 vertical support arms and 2 horizontal anchor bars as it adds to stability and rigidity. You can cut the 2 hanging brackets they provided into 4 pieces or use slotted flat metal as support arms. I guess it depends on how high your ceilinng is relative to your resting position of the GDO.
Also, there was one part of the instructions that got me confused but I finally figured it out. It had to do with the spring trolley nut.
In the instruction manual it says to jam a screw driver tip into one of the nut ring slots and brace it firmly against the trolley before turning the square nut 1/4 of a turn until the spring snaps into place. I couldn't get it to work, as the nut ring slot would also turn. It was dumb or I was dumb. I got a needle nose vice grip, locked it onto the nut ring slot and then turned the square nut on the other side till the spring releases and snaps into place. You will know exactly what I mean you actually do it. So just keep it in mind.
The first install took me 8 freakin sweaty hours during the hot weekend. A lot of time was spent with adjusting, tweaking, and oiling the door accessories . The second one I did in 4 freakin sweaty hours :o
I haven't programmed my remote to handle 2 GDO's because I don't have a need to. I may do it just for $hits and giggles though.
Good luck.
ps. Awesome GDO... I know, I know, it is just a GDO, but man this thing is so much better than the old ones that got replaced. So quiet, motion sensored lights, temperature readings, clock, rolling codes, posi-lock, remote lockout, force settings. Yeah the force setting was awesome. This is a 3/4 HP unit, and I am using it on single size doors so I was afraid that it would be too powerful for my doors. No sirree bob !!! The force settings compensates and you get a nice balance setup. My old 1/3 HP, GDO was very harsh on the doors, and noisy as hell. This thing rocks!!!!

Thanks a lot BoombasticSloth. It would be really nice and helpful if you or anyone else could post pictures of the final results of the Craftman GDO installation (different angles of the pictures would be great).
Or even better, if someone could post step by step GDO installation pictures. I know I am asking too much but this would be great help for everyone who are trying to figure out how to successfully install a GDO.
Thanks Again!

I got the GDO. Two as a matter of fact given that I have double doors. I looked at the instructions and they do not look to be too difficult to follow. What I do not want to happen is to screw up the installation and programming and end up having to seek for an installer anyway after losing much time on the work so, so far so good.
What I find somewhat confusing right now ,when reading through the installation instructions, is that i do not find the instructions about programming a remote to operate two different GDOs easy to understand. I basically want to link the two DGOs i bought together so that I can use a single remote to operate both doors. And how to operate both openers with a single wall panel too (do I need to install both wall panels to operate the two of them???).
Any helps appreciated.

You can have a single remote handle 2 door openers as long as you have 2 buttons on the remote. Otherwise both doors would open on a single press. Same applies to the wall panels (install both!)

I didn't see any mention of using a single wall console panel to control 2 different GDO's. Maybe you can try connecting the 2nd set of wires from the 2nd GDO onto the single wall console panel, but I am not sure if it is recommended or wether it may damage the units. You better contact Sears to find out. I am fairly certain you have to install both the wall console panels, one for each GDO because each console panel is hard wired onto each of the GDO units. If you don't hook up a wall console panel to one of the GDO's, you may lose functionality of some of the features of the GDO that are only accessed by the wall console panel. Or you when you execute a command from the wall console panel, it will activate on both GDO's which may not be practical, ie. open / close door. I am sure there may be workarounds, but I personally think it is too much of a hassle. I do notice that there are 2 open/close buttons on the wall console unit, but I am not sure if it is in series or if they can be programmed for 2 different GDO's. Again, maybe sears can help you out. Sorry.
I quickly looked at the instructions manual, you can use 1 remote to control up to 3 GDOs. Instructions are on page 37 of manual. From my understanding there are 2 methods of doing it, either from the the 2nd GDO motor unit, left hand column on the manual or the 2nd wall console unit, right hand column on the manual. But instead of pressing the big button on the remote, just press one of the 2 smaller buttons so that the second GDO can learn the code of one of the 2 smaller buttons for your single remote. At least that is how I interpret it and it makes sense.
Good luck.

I replaced my existing GDO from the 1970's ( I would have kept it running except that I couldn't find a replacement for a damaged traveller).
It was simple to replace/install. Just read the manual and follow the instructions.
This model is so quiet that I sometimes have to go outside to make sure that the door actually closed after pressing the remote from inside the home...

Yeah, one of my old GDO was quiet (but not as quiet as the craftsman), would sometimes open on its own. It was because the close limit kept changing on its own so that it would execute an emergency open. My other one was so freakin loud that it would wake the dead !!!! With the new openers, I get a smile on my face everytime I go inside the garage because it is so quiet, secure and so purrrdy :D
