Monitor must be removed to subtract $190 making the desktop $309.

This time pentium instead of Athlon.

Memory is down to $50 for the 2GB upgrade instead of $70, making it a reasonable price.

It's been pretty quick for me, and yea it was 250GB last time. Ordered Feb 20, received Feb 27.

No AGP, just a PCI-Express.

Not at all reasonable.

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18727&promoid=1055

And that's not even the best price.

Buy your own RAM, $50 would be reasonable (but still 40-50% overprices) for 2GB MORE, but not to go from 1GB to 2GB.

You're going to need to buy someones old PC. It's been 2-3 years since any motherboard was made that had an AGP slot. Some 939 boards do, so you can get a dual-core system if that's a goal.

You can still buy a new board with AGP. :cheesygri For $74, a good solution would be the Asrock (Asus' economy line) 4COREDUAL-SATA2 ATX LGA775 PT800 Ultra DDR DDR2 AGP PCI-E16 4PCI SATA2 Sound LAN Motherboard.

Cold, cold deal.. got the older deal last week with 2 GB of ram and 250 GB HD for $462 w/ tax.

462-309=153 you can almost buy a 500GB hd & 1G ram to add for the difference in price

1GB $47:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=24082&vpn=BL12864AA804&manufacture=CRUCIAL%20TECHNOLOGY

250GB seagate $70:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=25667&vpn=ST3250410AS&manufacture=Seagate

47+70=107 (+ taxes & shipping)

Throw the rest of the money towards: more ram, bigger HD or in your pocket.

500GB drives are almost always around 100 on sale now, and ram is getting cheaper.

I think this is a pretty good deal, and if I didn't want to keep my existing case/power supply/hard drives, then I would pick this up instead of looking for new internals for my system.

The idea of this PC is to buy it at $309 or $309 + $30 for the Vista Home Premium and upgrade the parts when you have the cash or when they go on sale.

It is the no-rush deal.

Cold, cold deal.. got the older deal last week with 2 GB of ram and 250 GB HD for $462 w/ tax.

$462 / 1.13 = $408
$408 - $309 = $99

For $90 you can get a 500GB HD, for $15 you can get 1GB of RAM. So it would see that for a mere $5 more, the deal nets you 660GB of HD space compared to your 250GB. If you know of some place else that I can get 410GB of HD space for $5, please tell.

this ninja math is correct except for labor and hassle

~90 seconds to install a harddrive, Add another 30 seconds for RAM, maybe 5 minutes of of your way to grab the stuff, or $7-8 for shipping.

Nothing to justify the loss of 410GB.

Technically yes, it will install XP Pro without needing the COA number on almost all Dell computers. If you are not moving the sticker and OS from the computer the enterprise install disc came with then legally no.

Its $309 with WinXP. Its a better processor than the Acer you linked to with the same size memory and hard drive, and a smaller hard drive than the Compaq but with a faster processor as well, and the Dell is $20 cheaper than either of those two. Also, the Compaq has no PCI slots for expansion, and looks to be preloaded with a lot of annoying trialware.

My father ordered the Dell yesterday to replace his home office computer both because of the price and because it has XP, so he doesn't need to worry about compatibility issues with software that he uses for his business.

You have noyhing to put under tax exemption...unless you're a native or something.

1 GB is enough but not optimal for Vista Basic and today's needs. And the memory is so cheap these days...

Order it as is and put 1 more GB yourself later if you want. This PC comes with 2x 512 MB but the motherboard has 4 memory slots so you have some room.

Lets talk about the moron who infiltrates a conversation in which he had nothing to do :D

"Infiltrates"? So I'm Sam Fisher now?

Donc, si je te dis de ne pas te mêler de ce qui ne te regarde pas et de me crisser patience, tu comprends quelque chose? Je sais pas pourquoi, mais je gagerais que non.

À bon entendeur...

Frankly, I'll involve myself in any conversation I please, especially one that's particularly amusing due to hilarious misinterpretation on the part of another. ;)

I was going to pick one up for my nephew; and it looks like dell has now removed the option to take out the monitor

Guess I'll have to call them up or something ...

Would you guys recommend the Slim case or the regular case.

I am going to make it a home server so i would add more ram and a bigger hard drive (not from Dell) aftermarket.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

having gotten the 531S with the slim case, i'd wish i got the regular case now because i'm having hard to time getting a low-profile graphics card. if you don't plan to upgrade or add cards, the slim case is the way to go. it's pretty nice looking case. however, i was also a bit disappointed that it was quite deep and didn't fit laying flat on my bookshelf.

If you want XP instead of Vista, go here:

http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/winxp_inspndt?c=ca&cs=cadhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=anavml

Or on the main Home and Home Office page on the left side under Essential links, click "Still Looking for XP?"

How do you delete the monitor from these setups?
Do you have to call in and deal with a rep to get them to remove it?

I need faster machine, already have a 22" monitor, but I don't want Vista. This deal sound good to me, especially if it's a slim case.

You can't remove the monitor anymore if the setup is a "special" if you want to remove the monitor you have to go and buy it at the normal price.

According to the CSR - they "fixed" this on Thursday; and the CSR refused to honor it for me. :(

so deal is dead?

At the moment yes, but I've found the week after or even days after it will change again.

I thought I missed the boat too, but after a week or so, the monitor selection allowed me to pick none again and I picked it up then.
