Was at Futureshop last night and saw a bunch of HD DVD's for cheap, like $14.99 for many. I only bought Old School but saw many others. Also saw some more recent titles for cheaper too (like Beowulf for $26).

Here are some I can remember at $14.99

Old School
Aeon Flux
Black Rain
Coming to America
Anchorman
Tomb Raider
Italian Job
Four Brothers
Mission Impossible
MI: 2
Top Gun
Sleepy Hallow
Untouchables
We were soldiers

many more too, maybe like 20-25 titles total

Also many others under $20, Face/Off was $17.99, 300 was $19.99 and so was Caddyshack, The Fountain, Firewall, Enter the Dragon and many more.

Check it out..

I'm waiting for this (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FSM2143513&catid=24090) to drop in price. Amazon.com is selling it for $72.99 so FS/BB is totally grouching us. I'll wait until it drops to around $50.

HD DVDs will not be hot until they are $10 or less, just my opinion. Or say $30 or less for multi disc sets like Planet Earth, which I would like to get for my parents (I already have it on Blu Ray, didn't want to pay $60 twice)

No MJM, more like 10% off. These titles everyday price was $20-$23 and they were all on sale for $19.99 at Christmas.

PlanetEarth is a good base to gauge the savings. Yesterday it was $99.99, today it is $89.99.

If it drops 10% every 1-2 weeks, we'll see some real savings soon enough.

$19.99 reduced to $14.99 would be 25% off. $23.99 reduced to $14.99 would be almost 40% off.

Some of these were $29.99 just recently, so that is 50% off.

I'm seriously waiting for them to drop to $10 each. I know they will. By then, though, the selection may suck, but whatever.

And from this point on, I'm just blocking anyone who disses HD-DVD in an HD-DVD thread. They're just not worth listening to, ever. I can't imagine they'd have anything positive to contribute to the forums, so why bother with their posts? like spam, mostly.

I guess you are right. I was reviewing the titles on sale and I thought they were $19.99-$23.99 just the other day.

Seems that all the Paramount movies are all $14.99. Cannot compare to blu-ray since they don't exist on that platform yet. I did some Google cache searching and most of these Paramount movies were indeed $26.99 on Feb 25, 2008, so we are indeed looking at a 40-50% price drop.

On the other hand, other HD-DVD movies that are also on blu-ray (i.e. PlanetEarth) remain the same price on both mediums.

Why not buy now and price match later? Keep the movies in their wrap and if the prices don't fall in 30 days you can take them all back, no?

Well, not a bad idea... but If they don't have stock to price match with, will they still price match? Or, if they sell out of a given title at the high price, the won't ever GET to $10... risky, but maybe not a bad idea.

As it stands, there are few titles at, for example, HMV Yonge & Dundas that I would pay more than $10 for... probably would scoop up a armload for $7.99, but I don't expect the prices to drop that far.

The online system will continue to carry the new price until the product is sold out at every store. You can get them to refund you the difference even if they don't have any quantity on hand.

Toys R Us are the best but they don't carry movies. They have a 90 day price match policy. I bought some games where I went back with only the receipt in hand to get the price match. One game I even went back a second time when it had dropped again in price. Love those liberal store policies.

It's not that risky. You can always opt to return in 30 days if the price doesn't drop enough...

Unless you mean "as a group" it may be risky, because if we all run out today and buy up all the HDDVDs, then of course the price won't drop because there will be none left :D

Agreed. Same here although $10 is the starting point for me when I see titles I'd normally want to buy at a good price on standard DVD anyways and then $5 for whatever that would be worth a viewing.

If they ever hit Dollarama I'll watch whatever crap tjat shows up.

Agreed again; that's what I've been doing. And I did the same thing before for those who bashed Blu-Ray in BR threads when both formats were still in the running. Ditto for those going on about 1080p in a 720p HDTV thread.

Okay, so I picked up the HD DVD player for $49.99 and the transformers HD DVD for $34.99 on wednesday last week.

Before I left I asked if I could Price Protect the dvd even if it is opened.

Already been back once to get $10 for the price protect on the Player (TSCC PM)

Has anyone thought of this or am I just gonna get owned when I go back in.

My intentions are to go in when the dvd drops to $14.99 and get the $20 back.

shouldn't be comparing w/ BD/W prices.

there were a lot of HD-DVD / BD movie sales (like amazon)... at WM they were selling selected titles for 2/$30

what we're comparing here are the current sale (/clearance?) prices vs. reg. prices.

there aren't v. many HD-DVD titles where the reg. price is <$20

Spoke to an FS manager at Eglinton and Laird.
He said, there isn't a 75% off sale that he knows of anytime soon.

He said there will probably be a 2 for 1 sale soon and just some usual discounting that they normally do.
So he said don't expect $5-10 HD DVDs.. until June or something..
He said that only if it sits on the shelf for a while will they discount it like that and if the movie was cheap to begin with... like $19.99 regular price..

I don't know if he was BSing or not.. but I agree with robot..
I don't think we'll see $5-$10 from FS/BB... for a while.

I odn't expect to EVER see a sale that cheap

it depends on the movie studios

Paramount just dropped their MSRPs so futureshop did as well

Universal will be dropping their MSRPs on the 4th so we should see a bunch more < $20 movies........ but FS/BB aren't going to firesale them... if they don't sell at that price the studios will just issue a mass recall and have the discs destroyed

Just spoke to some of the people I know over at FS/BB and they expect callbacks to be issued for the discs in the next couple of weeks, normally if they only have a few units to get rid of then you'll see a fire sale but if it's a larger number of units such as software (aka HD-DVDS) they're more likely to be pulled off the shelf and shipped back.

For what though, destruction? I mean what are the movie companies going to do with the discs once they get them back? They'd have to sell them off cheap to liquidators or other third parties, right? So you may see these very cheap on eBay or something in the future, no?

I'm assuming that FS/BB and other stores will only go so low on price, if you're correct about the callbacks, probably only as low as the negotiated "cost" was to the store at the time they got the shipments I'm assuming?

FS/BB will send back to the distributors to get their cost back.

On a $40 HD-DVD, chances are their cost is $20 or more. They don't want to lose THEIR money on a failed format, so they won't lower their prices below their cost. They will ship back to distributors for credit, and the distributors will likely liquidate inventory to select retailers at a real discount.

This process can take a few months, however.

This is true for FS and BB as well as stores like Walmart, but little guys (including the various website store sites) don't have flexible terms with their distributors so they'll be stuck with their stocks. Hence, the deepdiscount.com and ebay stores of the world have already knocked their prices to clear out - and they will only continue to drop until the stock is gone.

Also, you'll find some sweet deals on ebay soon from home users who will be trying to get rid of their collections (who knows why, since they aren't going to explode etc). Oddly enough, most ebay auctions are going for more than what can be had by other means.

Does anybody "in the know" about the workings of the media industry have an opinion on whether or not the stocks are sufficient for the studios to bother with recalls?

That is: the number of HD-DVD players is a minute fraction of DVD.

Lots of the movies in the HD-DVD catalogue are bargain $6.99 (older) DVD titles.

Very few titles are new releases i.e. the last 6-8 months, where the DVD version is still 'full price'.

So it does strike me that would the studios, who have already gone through the expense of manufacturing and distributing HD-DVD versions of $6.99 DVD movies going to bother to recall them so they can get the HD-DVD owners to pay $30 for them?

It strikes me that cutting their losses is just leaving the discs in the market, giving the stores a credit so the net cost to the retailer is low, and the retailer blows them out. I know the logistics aren't too terribly expensive, but it sounds like a multi-step, multi-month headache for them best resolved with blowout prices.

At least I hope it is.

Thanks. Grabbed American Gangster - good deal for a combo disc that's a brand new movie.

Don't see much of a deal in anything else yet. $12-$16 is still plenty for a dead standard with no SDDVD version on the other side.

here is amazon.com shipping rate to Canada: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=596192

total = Per Shipment + Per Item X number of items

For DVD: Per Item is always $2.99, Per Shipment depends on shipping method:

Standard $4.99
Expedited $6.99
Priority $19.99

so Standard = $4.99 + $2.99 X number of items

Standard and Expedited are duty free to my past experiences, not sure Priority :D

Orders from amazon.com don't always ship from within Canada. It all depends on their warehouse stock at the time. They have warehouses in several different states as well as one in Ontario, so order may ship from either one.

Whether or not you'll get hit with border taxes is more or less luck of the draw.

I've heard people say that before, but I've never actually heard of anyone having an order shipped from the US and paying taxes on it. Since I've done over 30 orders and every order has been shipped from Ontario, I would say the odds are pretty good it will be shipped from Canada

They do ask for CC info first but it doesn't matter as you have to click the order now button on the next page anyways before your order is accepted so after you see the shipping charges, you can back out or leave if you don't like them

Shipping charges are based on the amount of items ordered, so what did you order?

I'm amazed that alot of people focus on the extra buck for shipping at DD (I thought it was $5.99 and not $6.95? - "Canadian Exception: We ship orders to Canada via USPS for our standard charge of $5.95."), but are happy to pay an extra $3 bucks per DVD at Amazon.

I did a comparison between Amazon and DD on about 22 HD DVDs. There was only 1 instance of Amazon being cheaper once you factor in the $3 extra per DVD.

Well that was disappointing. Not what I was expecting when I heard HDDVD was dead.

Remember 10 years ago, LD was being cleared and you could actually buy 'em cheap? I owned an LD player but I wasn't in the market for the discs, so I skipped the clearance.

Now the retailers would just return the "failure" to the studios instead of passing the good deals to the public eh? It's like, oh buy our fantastic HDDVD player Toshiba A3 at the amazing $199.99 in late December and oops, the format is dead, prices are still high, not our fault.

Just a month ago flyers were still singing about how wonderful HDDVD 1080i will "enhance your home theatre experience". What home theatre experience? Something you slimy retailers would rather get rid of now because this failure no longer makes magic money?

I didn't buy A3 but I could imagine how betrayed a HDDVD supporter would feel at this very end of the format - no more hardware, no cheap software, wtf is going on.

Just ranting :cheesygri

The least they could do is provide cheap Hd dvd's for the supporters atleast. They just left anyone with a HD dvd player in the dust.

Everyone involved (Toshiba, the studios etc.) is cutting their losses and bailing out of HD DVD, which is now a dead format. The remaining stock will be sold off. 'Supporters' might get some good clearance deals but won't get any love from the above companies, the format war is over and they are moving on. Most of the people buying HD DVD players are 'vultures', myself included, that heard the format is dead and want to pickup some good deals. There is no future for the format.

So there will be some great HD DVD deals to come, but maybe not on the titles you want.

I chose Standard shipping when ordering from Amazon.com also.

But when choosing that shipping option, it said shipping speed is roughly 7-11 days.....also, my order tracking details says the estimated delivery time is March 20-21 (I ordered yesterday, and I live in Toronto). Do they overestimate the delivery time just to avoid customer complaints, but ship quickly anyways?

Can you confirm that this is the shipping speed you were quoted with also when ordering from them, and that you actually received the package in 3 business days?

Basically, after March 18 it looks like there will be no further HD DVD releases at all. This is the date Universal has scheduled for the HD DVD release of Atonement, and as it looks now this is still on its way. Paramount, on the other hand, have already canceled all remaining HD DVD releases that they had previously scheduled. The last ones to hit the shelves (at a handful of stores) were this week with Into the Wild and Things We Lost in the Fire. I can't recall if Warner would continue to "support" HD DVD through May, as they initially announced, but I wouldn't bet on it anymore. That's all she wrote.

So grab the cheap movies while you can. And don't hold off too long for other stuff to drop. There's better odds they'll get sent back before they drop in price.
