Just picked up a Murray 5hp 21" Snowblower for $350 at Sam's Club on the Queensway. They had about 6 left, located at customer service.

The model is 621501x31nb
It's a 2 stroke, GAS (50:1) single stage thrower.

Similar models at CT go for $499.99.

Here's a link to the manual http://www.arkansas-ope.com/MURRAY_SNOWBLOWER_621501X31NB.pdf

Bought this sucker from Homedepot.ca for $374 with tax and delivery when that 25% off coupon was available and they had it on sale...

No complaints and much much easier to use than the jumbo gear driven model than my neighbour! Great deal and very light. No problems (yet).

Recommended.

being a layman, question, what is the meaning of 50:1, gas/engine oil ratio? thanks for input

With a 2 stroke engine, you have to mix the oil and gas in the same tank. It takes a little bit more work refilling the gas tank, but then again for that price you can't complain especially in today's storm.

Gas to oil ratio. So every 50L of gasoline you need 1L of oil. If you have a Jerrycan that can hold 25L of gas, you need 500mL of oil :D

The machine is already set-up (assembled).
I wonder if it's a refurbished or not?
No manual also??!!
OP. could you confirm if there is no manual came with it.

BTW,
thanks, OP!!
My back is already killing me already due to shovelling :cheesygri
Can't wait to test it out...;)

One question also. Does Sam club have the same return policy like as Costco has? Life-time return/ exchange?

Mine was also assembled, I checked with management and they said they were new. The manager found me a manual after some time of searching.

I split on one of these with a neighbour a few years ago.
Its ok for light snow.

If it has the folding handle, you're going to find its a real
pain in the a**. The folding handle is held in place by 2 t-handle
bolts and nuts, at the crossbar, as seen below

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/productImages/3/2/00000103332-Murray621500X4SnowThrower-large.jpeg

Ideally, a folding handle makes it easier to store over the summer.
I just put it where the lawmower was all winter.

When you push the snowblower into a heavy pile and it won't push thrrough the snow, the point at which the handle folds will try and buckle.
After a few winters, it will completely fold over.
Thats a huge pain.
We had ours welded at the folding point once during a yearly tuneup.

You're going to want a separate 'snowblowing ' coat.
The fumes that come out of these things will make your coat smell like u washed it in fuel. Best to keep the coat out in the garage.

Lubricate auger blades and discharge chute of snow blower with WD-40 so the wet stuff doesn't get clogged up.

I would do every other year.

any small engine shop that does lawnmowers is fine.

Someone in your neighbourhood will be able to tell you of a place.

I have one of these that I bought at Home Depot in the fall with the 25% off coupon thanks to the kind folks at RFD. Works good for the price, but after using it all winter (as if winter is over!!) a few tips:

1. After turning it off, turn the key to the ON position. I didn't do this at first and it froze up on me in the OFF position one day. There was no way I could turn the key without breaking it.
2. Don't let the snow build up more than 4 or 5 inches before using it. The single stage doesn't work well with much more snow than that.
3. Don't bother using it on heavy, wet snow as it will only throw it a few feet. That being said, maybe the WD40 trick will help.
4. Keep lots of gas/oil handy. The gas tank is small and it runs out quickly.
5. Don't plan on using it early in the morning or late at night otherwise your neighbors will be very annoyed with you as it is quite loud.

I got this blower from Sam's back in the fall when they had a $50 off coupon - it has saved me a few times but as previous poster said in wet and thick snow it won't help much. Take for instance today - I live on a corner hence the reason I got this but I had to first break the trampled snow up quite a bit before I could work the blower through it - quite a tough job. Still a good price.

Will try the WD40 - thanks for the tip!

Ok I have a little single stage Toro Snowmaster 20 that was made in 1978 and I have used it every snowstorm this year in Toronto and it has never failed me. It is a 21 inch and 3 HP (or less !!! ). I am guessing the quality has gone down a little over the years but mine has lasted 30 years now without any problems so even if the new ones only last 15 years thats still a good deal at $350. Only thing ever done on it was change the spark plug every couple of years. The carb is now leaking, but doesnt really affect it much. Still starts right up.

By the way the slushy stuff works better with these single stage machines than with the larger 2 stage ones, so in my opinion are the best choice for home use.

Those tips are great!

NOTE #1 ESPECIALLY!

I broke mine because on the second session of the day the key froze and I broke the starter! Since it was 6 years old we bought a bigger blower and sold this one to a friend who replaced the starter/key section with a simple $1 switch and it's fine now.

The blower is bullet proof. We had it 6 years and never had it tuned and it worked great except for the key freezing this year.

It is a small blower but I am missing how easy it was to manuver and just grab it and push out for a quick clearing. We have a bigger blower now, the kind that drives it self. It's alot more powerful but it's a handful to drive. Not used to it yet I suppose.

My reply is off topic but Costco is about to change their return policy, I suggest on your next trip to Costco you stop at the front desk and let them know that one of the main reasons that you shop there is because of their return liberal policy.

I inherited so to speak, a Toro S200, very simialr to the one you have I would imagine.

I found a picture of yours

http://kijiji.ebayimg.com/i9/02/k/000/79/2d/3018_20.JPG?set_id=1C4000

And I found another similar to the one I have (S200 - looks identical to yours)

http://mandeservice.com/images/DSC00487.JPG

I tried starting it...no go, but I doubt it has been used in some time. It may just need the fuel drained and a new spark plug, but I may just take it in to a a place and have them service it because really, it could be more, I just don't know.

My question to you is, is it worth it?? I am not sure what the serice costs will be (anyone have any idea what a tune up or maintenance package averages at a small engine repair shop?), but would it be worth it to spend money to fix it (could be minor), or buy a new one for more money, but also a new model.

How do the paddles perform compared to the blade type mechanism on these newer ones.

I ask all of this because without seeing one of these in action, I am not sure what to do. I would prefer just to have this one serviced, but if it performs poorly (those paddles just seem odd), maybe I should just buy a new one.

Any advice you have based on your experience would be appreciated.

TIA

It all depends on how much area you have to clear and how often you are available to clear it. I have a small (4 car) driveway, and it works well on that as long as you don't let the snow build up. We were away last month for a few days and the combination of heavy snow and the kids packing down the snow with their cars made it impossible to clear. Then again, as this is my first snow blower, I don't know if the bigger units will clear hard-packed down snow.

My guess is that its more than likely the spark plug. I change it out every year or so as they are $2 for the plug. Drain the gas. Put in some new gas oil mixture. Then pull the starter a couple times and prime it about 7 times (yes 7 or so) and it will prolly start. The scraper at the bottom and the paddles can be bought on ebay generally pretty cheap (about 30 for all of it or even cheaper)

Its a great blower that gets the job done and doesnt complain. I would give it a shot getting it started before buying a new one.

Probably right, I will give it a try. Appreciate the advice.

I just had a look at it, seems like its in pretty good condition. The scraper paddles look almost new, so good there. But the directional slots at the top seem very flimsy (by design). The rubber seems slim enough that I cannot see how snow hitting them would not cause them to flap around uncontrollably rather than direct the snow to the side. So the paddles operate well you say??? What depth are you able to get through? Can't see it being much good on the hard gifts at the end of the driveway that the plough leaves.

Check out this link at Kooy brothers, toro is completely sold out this year http://www.kooybros.com/aboutus/

I'm glad I got my Toro powercurve 1800 last year, it has especially served me well this winter. I know some of you guys are skeptical about electric snowblowers, probably because you associate them with those electric shovels. But I love mine and I have a big 4 car driveway. No gas, no oil, no fumes, no maintenance. Hang it up on the wall in the garage

This year, Toro dropped the price to $349 (because stronger cdn $), was $399 last year. So, consider it at the beginning of next season.
