Hi guys!

So I took a 12 month long course that cost around 300 bucks. I got a receipt from the school.

The program I am using asks for the tuition amount, then full or part time. It then asks how many months you are part time.

1. Do I just stick in 12 months? What if it ran until Nov 2007, do i just put 11 months or something else?

2. Should i have claimed it during the 2006 tax year since I paid for it in 2006 but in Nov? What if i paid for it and my employer paid me back BUT I had to pay them back since I left the company, and that happened in 2007. So at the time I didn't claim in it 2006.

Thanks for any help!

You should have received a T2202A from your school if it was an eligible fee. This would outline the eligible tuition fees (usually much less than you actually paid the school, because it doesn't include student fees). The t2202a would also tell you the number of months. If you don't have one you should be able to contact your school to get one even if it is for previous years and then amend your tax return if needed.

Edit: I believe you would claim the credit for the study period you actually took the class, regardless of when you paid (the months and year would be outlined on the t2202a)

It's a tax credit and not a deduction. So long as you will still have to pay some taxes in 2007 after figuring out the tuition credit, you might as well claim the tax credit in 2007. No point deferring it unless you have no income tax to pay in 2007.

The fellow above is right, ask the school for the form.
