Good day folks, i have an older system (about 5 years) that just died on me. When I press the power button, nothing happens, the CPU fan spins for about 1 second then stops. The optical mouse lights up so I assume there is juice to the PC.

Here is what I have done so far and no luck, could you please advise on what else I can try? I would like to install Linux on this and play around. Thanks

- different power cable

- different power outlet

- different power supply (that works on another system)

- clear CMOS jumper

- remove CMOS battery and put it back in

- remove RAM sticks and IDE cables from the board

- make sure all connections are firm on the board

Nothing, nada, zip. The CPU fan spins for 1 second and nothing after. The fan on the power supply won't even spin at all. I am thinking of replacing the CMOS battery since this is a fairly old system. Either that or the CPU and/or the board is fried ? It was on as of 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Any other recommendations that you have ?

Thanks

Yep, either dead CPU or dead Mobo.
