So,

My Inspiron 6400 has been recently emitting a high pitched "hum" or "buzz" from the top right part of the computer... I think I've isolated to either the USB ports or the headphone/mic jacks. I can stop the hum for a few seconds by hitting it, physically.

I actually took the laptop apart to check if anything was loose... but nothing was. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem? Or if there is a fix to it?

The sound is present when i use a battery or the A/C power.

It is getting really annoying. It does go away when the laptop heats up a bit though... but thats after like 30 minutes of being on.

Sounds more like an issue with the cooling fan, especially since it goes a way temporally when you hit it or the computer warms up. My old desktop PSU did the same thing. Try cleaning all of the exhaust vent holes on the laptop including the ones on the top beside the keyboards.

Read the service manual on how to disassemble the Laptop and clean the system fan.
