For the past couple of days my monitor has been going idle randomly, moving the mouse doesnt bring it back on.
I have to restart to turn my system back on.
My system actually rebooted itself yesterday rather than the monitor just going idle. When I started Firefox I noticed my bookmarks all disappeared along with my recently visited servers on xfire. Havent noticed if anything else is missing.
AMD X2 4800+
Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2
Sapphire x1950xt
2gb OCZ Platiinum
2x300gb Seagate
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

It rebooted itself?... sounds like it could be your power supply

Oh boy... Is there any way to check if there is something wrong with my power supply?
Its a Corsair 550vx which I bought in December along with most of my other parts.

~try the system with one stick of your ram, one at a time if things persists with one and not the other then well......... also try the sticks in two different slots example:
take them both out, take one and try in both or all slots one at a time.
~make sure video card cable is good/tight
~reseat the video card
~make sure CPU fan is spinning

do you have another computer? if so switch power supplies and see if it runs on the working computer, if it does properly then its not your PS if it doesnt work then its ur PS most likely

Update your video drivers. The 690G chipset had a problem with the screen just going blank at random times.

I updated my drivers and did not have any problems for a couple of days but started getting the display error again today. It also rebooted itself a couple times. Checked to see if anything was loose but not a problem there.
Anything else I can try?

sounds to me that your video card is having problem.
try this, play a music file, if the screen goes black and ur music is playing(u hear sound) then it's a bad video card.

I play music files all the time and it has never gone blank.
It only goes idle when its not in use, never had it go idle while in use.
I can be surfing, stand up to get a drink and when I get back it will be idle, I need to reboot before I can get back on. Occasionally I will get back to see it booting Windows.

What o/s are you using? Does it happen often?
I've had it happen to me ONCE where I actually had to hard reboot. Vista64 + Evga 8800gt.
I doubt it's your power supply. Likely driver related problems that still need to be worked out.

I had this problem on my computer with a 3 or 4 year old install of XP. Too many changes over the years and it started corrupting....I think what really hurt it is too many changes in the user accounts or people randomly installing/uninstalling stuff.
The monitor going into idle and requiring reboot to wake up was like the 'beginning' of the trouble, then it started rebooting once in a while on its own.
The last straw was failure to recognize or use the onboard LAN. I checked all kinds of stuff like power supply, RAM, drivers, etc etc. Without an internet connection the computer was pretty useless.
Anyway I ended up doing a clean install. No fun. Everything works fine now.

Im using Windows XP and it hasnt been installed for long, maybe 3 months or so when I built this system.
Im the only user on this system and dont install uninstall programs very often.
I will try deleting old video card drivers then reinstalling again, if that doesnt work I guess I will go with a clean install.
Thanks for the replies, I will report back here.
