I just got this camera - http://www.vistek.ca/details/details.aspx?WebCode=235280&CategoryID=DigitalCameras

Sony DSC-S730

If I want to be able to take at least 100 high quality pictures before having to upload onto my computer, what is the best deal or at least a good deal on memory? What should I be looking for?

Any 1GB memory stick is fine, its an older point and shoot, so any brand will do okay. As for deals, just take a look around in the Hot Deals section.

How many of the top quality pictures this camera can take will a 1GB stick hold? I'm going to UFC next weekend and I want to make sure I can pump out at least 100 every night and then put them on my lappy.

Also - what is an average cost for a 1GB stick? I've noticed there are lots of different kinds looking on bestbuy.ca some are like 91.99 for 4GB....seemed very high to me.

Sony's own proprietary storage media has always been expensive, thats why you don't buy Sony point and shoots if you're not prepared to buy expensive storage media.

Take for example SD cards, you can get a 2GB for less than $20!! 4GB for less than $40! Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Casio, Olympus point and shoot cameras, for example all use SD cards.

Take a look at your manual to get an idea of how many HQ photos your camera will put out on average in a 1GB memory stick, it should be in there.

So I can still use the generic SD Cards that are not made by Sony right? There will not be a big difference?

MS and SD are two different formats.

The only other mainstream company that I know make MS is Sandisk. So yes.

I'm confused - they are different formats but I can still use a generic SD card with a Sony Camera? I need one before next weekend so I think i'll just pop in at BB

thanks for the help

at most, 7.2 megapixels should be around 3.5MB/picture so 1GB is easily enough.

Ya, that would be fine.

Alternatively, you could have gotten:

2 Gig for $36.49 (gives you more movie recording time)

http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProdList&cmd=pl&id=990.190&mfg=all&sort=3

Or on sale: 4 Gig for $47.99 (Now that's a good price for MSticks)

Just to clarify, you CANNOT use SD cards in a Sony camera. You can use an MS which can be from any manufacturer, as long as it's an MS. However, the only manufacturer of MS outside of Sony seems to be Sandisk.
