Finally a look at wtf is going with nvidia cards.

"NVIDIA's 8-series will go end of life in about 4 months. All cards will be replaced by 9-series cards. The 8800GTS / GTX is going to be replaced by an 9800GTX in Q2. The very well received 8800GT will also go end of life in Q2 and will be replaced by a 9800GT, which is just a retagged 8800GT. Also the lower and midrange cards will be replaced.
We end up with the following list:

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/121/gtxtt6.gif

Keep in mind ATi's new cards (RV7x0) will be released around the same time."

source 1: Phyxion.net (http://phyxion.net/hardware/news/nvidias-new-lineup-and-eol-news.html)
source 2: digitimes (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20080222PD207.html)
source 3: nordichardware.com (http://www.nordichardware.com/news,7386.html)

So in the end these 9x00 series cards all are G92 respins. This includes (by the looks of it) the 9800GTX also. So if you have an 8800gt/gts(512mb) you won't see to much of a speed jump by going to the new cards. Other info from vr-zone also say the 9800GT is just a renamed 8800GT .. no difference at all.

If this is true then great news for people who don't own an 8800GT yet. They'll come crashing down in price.

Also great for people who do own 8800gt, so they have no reason to upgrade  everyone is happy except nVidia

Get it from NCIX instead. The 8% PST savings outweighs the shipping.

VR-Zone has gotten some details and photos of the GeForce 9800 GTX (G92-P392) card. It comes with 12-layer PCB at 4.376" by 10.5". This card is clocked at 673MHz for core and 1683MHz for the shader while memory clock is yet to be determined. The memory interface is 256-bit with 512MB of 136-pin BGA GDDR3 memory onboard. It comes with two DVI-I and one HDTV-out. There are two SLI connectors and two 6-pin PCIe power connector. The card employs the CoolerMaster TM67 cooler where the fan is rated at 0.34A, 4.08W, 2900rpm, 34dBA. The total board power is 168W.

It looks like a 8800GTS 512? Clocks are barely higher.

Were you expecting something better ;)

I was expecting something that would at least be clocked 10% higher, not 4%. This doesn't even justify the GTX suffix, let alone the generation jump to 9-series. There are factory overclocked 8800GTS 512s out there with higher clocks. If VR-Zone's specs are right then the reference 9800GTX is inferior to most 8800GTS 512s in every aspect.

For example, http://www.hothardware.com/articles/NVIDIA_GeForce_8800_GTS_Refresh_Asus_and_XFX/?page=2

I personally find Nvidia's odd number series are usually not as revolutionary as the even number series ...

Wheee. Sub $100 8800GT is in the cards later this year, clearance special of course...

That'll make a nice upgrade from the ol 6800GT and 850XT.

lol I wish but don't think it is likely to happen, It will still be a very good performing card for the price...
