View Full Version : RBC Messed Up My Money Order

I was supposed to be picking up my car from the dealership today so I showed up there with my bank draft from RBC. Turns out that the branch never stamped their Signature or Countersignature on the draft, so I was not able to get the car. I phoned RBC up and they say the only thing I can do is to go to the branch and get them to stamp it, unfortunately it is closed until tomorrow.
Bloody RBC. This is my first time getting a bank draft. Has anyone else experienced this kind of stupidity. Is it common?

Chit happens sometimes>:( . I don't know about RBC, but we tellers at Bmo do make the occasional mistake. It's not hard to get distracted, or be interrupted while doing something and mess it up. Personally, I have made a big goof on a draft once- when I used the protectograph, I wheeled the right numbers, but entered the "CDN" symbol instead of the USD one, and didn't notice it. The client came back the next day steaming because the supplier he was trying to pay wouldn't take it. FYI- banks will still cash them, but they usually fax it to the issuing branch to verify.
Oh, to make it up to the client, I gave him 100 Airmiles- that made him happy.
I just hope they didn't charge you for the draft initially? As a branch rule, we don't charge our customers for money orders or drafts (unless they get like 5 or something)- we do charge non-clients the $5 fee though.
Maybe you could ask the bank to notate your account to let you have free certified cheques in the future? Great way to save!
Hope it all works out for ya!

I already get a number of free drafts and certified cheques each year due to the banking package in use.

The manager at that RBC Branch gave me a $50 deposit as a result of this error.

that's really really strange...the Teller is suppose to show the manager the money order (i assume it was large because it was for a car)...how did it get missed by 2 ppl?

The teller never even showed it to the manager. She just handed it to me without any signatures.
The manager said that it was a serious mistake and the first time she had seen it in 6 years.

Exactly. I had already written up a flaming letter to send to their customer care dept but I won't be sending it now because it was taken care of to my satisfaction in the branch.

Oh yes. Two years ago when we bought our house. We had to take a certified cheque to the lawyers for $12,700.00. Thank god I went and picked up the cheque the day before i needed it (we closed the next day-last day before a three day weekend).
While showing my MIL that night, she says "but it's only for $1,270.00" I immediately look at it, of course and she was right! My separate paper receipt still said $12700, and that's what they took out of my account.
the next day when i went to the bank to explain i actually got the gal who 'stamped' it for me. she actually argued with me, that i was wrong. seeing the commotion someone else came up to look at it, and she also of course realized it was wrong, and the reprinted me another on the spot.
We'd have had to delay the closing of the house and been in violation of contract had we not been lucky enough to have the extra day to fix 'their' mistake.

Making a mistake is fine, but arguing that it's fine when it's clearly not is purely stupid and is something I would have escalated to a manager just to piss off the employee.
