Can anyone recommend a good, aftermarket, generic-brand battery for this camera?
I've been looking all over E-bay and there are tons of batteries dirt cheap and I obviously want another battery to supplement the one that came with the camera, but none that will explode or melt inside the casing!
Okay, I know it won't do that, but you know what I mean - something about paying $5 for an item that normally costs 10 times as much which I find fishy.
But.. the FS and BB replacements are like $50-60!
PS It uses the NB-4L..
Thanks in advance,
Chad

I bought a couple replacement batteries for $0.79 from ebay, plus $5 shipping, and they seem to be fine. No explosions yet, and they appear to last almost as long as the original, although I don't have any numbers to support that.

I bought a knock-off locally to save on shipping but it doesn't perform anywhere close to the genuine battery. The charge drops off and I won't rely on it. I just want a 2nd battery for emergencies.
It's just like my previous Canon, the knock-off batteries started dying after 25 charges. Now I have 2 dead batteries but original Canon battery is still working. You get what you paid for in this case.
Knock-offs should run you $15 to $20 with shipping included. In Toronto some stores sell for $15+TAX.

This could very easily be the case with my batteries...I haven't charged them more than 10 times yet, so they could potentially crap out as well.

In my case, batteries for my 550 started to drop off around 25-30 charges. The battery indicator would come on earlier and after 6 months it suddenly refused to take more than 30 pictures.
Then dead. So not bad for $15 but yeah, at least there are lots of Canon knock-offs

Many thanks - I picked one up off of E-Bay from these guys for $12US.
It was $8.99US shipping to Toronto.
