Played with a bunch of settings - eventually settled on the following.
Bigger / smaller aperture quality was sort of mediocre.
Exposure Time: 0.0031 s (1/320)
Aperture: f/9.0
ISO equiv: 100
Lens is a EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 @ 300mm on an Canon 400d - so ~480mm equiv.
First moon shot, learned a lot (that sucker is bright)
Opened RAW file in photoshop, turned saturation all the way down, sharpness all the way up, corrected color fringing (which was noticeable around the bright edge of the moon)
Hoping to get something going for the upcoming lunar eclipse, we'll see what happens. I'm on the west coast, might be a bit too bright.
Any ideas / criticism, let me know.
Thanks

yea, when i first shot the moon, i thought i'd need long exposure w/ a tripod... how wrong i was.
try applying some levels to the picture, and maybe more sharpening.

well...first it's going to be cold outside, so dress warm!
then get a monopod/tripod depending on the lens you use. for mine i was using a 300mm but it had IS... your shutterspeeds should be high but tripod it anyways
use spot metering and meter the moon if possible. if not, throw it on manual and chimp the exposure settings. i usually stick it on the len's sharpest aperture (F8-F11), iso100 and toy with shutter until the highlights are just about to blow out (so keep going until highlights blow then bring it back).
keep this setting and shoot away. dont worry about what the exposure meter tells you.
oh and turn on manual focus and set it to infinity.
that's about all i can think of

i dont think light pollution would be too much of an issue since your shutter speeds will be pretty fast. but it wont hurt if you've got some place close/easily accessible that's also dark

The previous Lunar Eclipse in August of Last year, I was able to take the pictures from my bedroom. :) I just brought up my tripod and camera and set it all up. It's nice to look at but it just looks like a normal moon picture unless you animate it. :D

Yep, always keep a second one charged and in your pocket.
However, it's not a good idea to bring a completely frozen camera inside without putting it in a bag (ziplock if possible) and letting it warm up inside a camera bag to room temperature.

Lessen the exposure to the atomsphere, and the difference in temp between camera and air is fairly large, the air near the camera might get condensated. I think ....

to bring it gradually back to room temperature. Condensation can lead to bad things with camera's and lenses, or electronic's in general.

with a P&S and the DOF that it offers, you wouldn't need more than f/4 to be pretty equal to a DSLR with f/11.

So... op here... I drove out to get a good pic of it over the city. Arrived a bit late, since NASA said it started at 7 (and I didn't realize that meant totality, thought it was "the beginning")
Anyways... Pull off the road... Drive over a curb, van tires on the right side immediately sink into the ground, which is the consistency of puffed marshmallow.
Car starts sinking until it stops - because the bottom of the shock / crossbar is sitting on the curb and holding the car up.
After shovels, manhole covers and a lot of angst later, I got a tow truck to lift the back of the van and drop it on the road. Fortunately, no damage to the suspension.
Meh...
Then AF was being a ***** (and the moon was too small to MF well), my crap tripod wasn't strong enough to prevent my camera from moving in the wind, etc, etc.
So.. crummy day...Not a total loss though - I managed to get this shot of our bridge. I think I'll go back one night after a rain and do a panorama from there.

it wasnt in focus. ive taken shots of the moon when it was full in the past with some pretty good results. i was just too lazy to set it on infinity. i think the af on my cam has some issues anyways. here is a shot of it normal using the same lense. both times it was tripoded with remote trigger and i think i even set the custom function so that the mirror slap would be less noticeable.

Wow KorruptioN! Every 15 min - I didn't have the patience for that.
Here's one of mine though right at the end:

Well I've added some new pics on flickr, what do you guys think of the luminosity merges vs the HDRs? I'm still working on processing some of the photos I had that night, and hope to put together a composite showing the progression of the eclipse.

The last HDR was the first one I posted and made the flickr explore front page!

the clouds have been wonderful these few days, so i tried to take a few pics of the moon and clouds with my D40 and kit lens at full 55mm.
However, I cant really get a good pic, like I dunno how to set it to make the clouds perfect as well as the moon.
This is the best I could come up with. I need advice....

Cool, the thread lives on ;)
In terms of exposure, I don't think it's possible to get both the moon and clouds both exposed on the same frame, so you'll have to take 2 pics and then combine them in photoshop or whatever. RAW won't help. Even a ND8 graduated filter won't darken the moon enough
I suppose you can try to do an HDR, but nice clouds typically move a whole bunch due to wind and that will probably screw up the HDR unless you mask everything except the moon out. Make sure you get WB set correctly - I did a quick hack job on this pic and it looks odd with the reddish halo (looks decent as a 5x7 though, so you can get away with it pretty easily.)

when u say set the WB correctly, how should i set it at? i usually just leave it in auto and dont wanna mess with it, unless its the preset wb, like sunlight, cloudy, incandescant, stuff like that.

yea, when i first shot the moon, i thought i'd need long exposure w/ a tripod... how wrong i was.
try applying some levels to the picture, and maybe more sharpening.
here's what i got

could we ask you for 1680x1050 resolution?
i would really love to use that as my wallpaper

Heres my shot from the last Eclipse.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/2298736605_4a01e41f7d_o.jpg
1 sec exposure
F4.0 @280mm
ISO 800.
This was the best of many different exposures for me.

why such high iso? I thought we need to use low iso for this type of pics. Also, i found out most people use high aperture with a low shutter speed for the moon, but then the pics come out too dark, is this the reason for the high iso?

This was a Lunar Eclipse. The brightness is very low as you can tell by the 1 second shutter at F4.0 @iso800.
If I were to use iso100 I would need to have a 8 second shutter for the same exposure, which in turn would cause the moon to blur with no detail at all - the moon travels quite fast in the sky!

You use whatever ISO allows you to get the picture. ;) As such, a 1sec exposure is pretty long and close to the limit, the earth is constantly moving and as a result, the moon is not in a static location for long.
As for why your pics come out dark, it depends on if you're using the proper metering mode and accounting for the fact that you're shooting an almost white object. You may need to overexpose by 1/3-2/3 stop or dial in + EV. Remember that camera's don't really understand "white", they try to make everything "neutral grey". The aperture and shutter are set accordingly. I normally try to stay f/8-f/11 and don't like to go slower than 1 sec shutter.

so lets say i have these settings and trying to take a moon pic with clouds as the background, i would need to lower the exposure time, lower the aperture, as well as over expose.

Your have a limited Dynamic Range in a Photograph. You can't have the Moon exposed properly and the clouds exposed well in one scene. Taking multiple exposures and creating a HDR would give this image though.

You would need to lower the exposure time (as in, faster shutter speed), not necessarily lower the aperture since you're not really zoomed in all that close, and overexpose but you should be using spot to expose just the moon to get a more accurate meter reading and then deciding on how much to overexpose to get a white moon as opposed to a dark grey moon.
As mentioned though, you can't have it all in one shot. You'll need multiple shots and merge them to get the clouds as visible as you want them without having a blown out moon.
