My Lacie tube is on it's way out and it's time I step into the flat monitor world.

Could I get some suggestions on what monitors are out there right now that offer good picture quality/accuracy without stepping into the 1K+ units?

My research last year had me considering the Samsung 245T or Dell 2407.

Are these the right choice in the under $650 category (USD)?

Are there any options that are cheaper?

The Samsung T-series (with S-PVA panels) are great monitors. Had one previously. I am using a Dell 2007WFP (with S-IPS panel) now because I wanted to get a wide-format screen. Works well for me and calibrates well.

Just got back from - does the Dell 2007 use the same panel as the 2407? From my reading the Samsung and Dell 24" are basically the same monitor.

Dell 2007WFP uses S-IPS panel. (edit: its actually a lottery for 2007wfp, it could be s-ips or s-pva)

Samsung 245T & Dell 2407 both use the S-PVA panel.

Their all good. Just don't get any TN panel.

Most people rate the panels S-IPS >= S-PVA >>>>> TN.

Anyone know what panel is in the L200p? It is a 20.1" IBM LCD

I am using a 2405 and a 2407 and have no problems. I do feel when viewing my pics on other people's monitors that they do not seem to have the same amount of detail as mine.

This will also give you a comprehensive list of widescreen monitors out there and their panel type. I find this list very helpful when picking out a monitor

Done my research and they've since released the Dell 2408WFP.

Any other models I should consider?

I only need DVI input and possible HDMI (optional). Use is for enthusiast am photog and business use.

I have calibration equipment and value colour accuracy (S-PVA or S-IPS panels).

I would consider 22" or 24".

List to date:
Samsung 245T
Dell 2408WFP

I have a Dell 2405wfp which uses a PVA panel, and I find the color reproduction to be good and contrast to be excellent. Lots of visible detail.

Imo just about any non-TN panel based screen should give you nice results.
