Well, I can tell you that is 20 bucks lower than it was last week. I picked it up for a friend @ 129.99, with $30 MIR, bringing it to $99. Now it's 109.99 with $30 MIR, down to $79. I thought it was a great price back then, so this is even better.
He uses it inside a $309 Dell machine with no probs. Quite happy with it actually, and the machine is still pretty quiet.

err ... Tigerdirect rebates. Don't care for them.
But this is a good price for some very good mid-range gaming.
Company of Heroes is great though ... worth about $20 bucks alone.

does that mean it's good for explicit gaming AND *cough* explicit viewing too?
ok, two questions:
is it online only? most TD stuff I found are online
what happens to TD's rebate?

I'm not impressed with the 8600gt if these charts are accurate. Quickly checking the charts there is between 90% and 120% fps increase from the 6600gt to the 7600gt. Comparing the 7600gt and the 8600gt shows an increase of between 10% and 50% fps.
If I was using onboard graphics and wanted to start gaming this would be a good choice considering the price, but it doesn't seem worth it if upgrading from a 7600gt.

I had ordered one of these earlier in the week to upgrade an integrated 6150se. Should be along shortly. I have a weak PSU as well so the low power requirement was a huge draw.
FYI to westcoasters, this is $82.28 AR @ NCIX as well. Was oos when I ordered or I could have saved myself shipping.

Be aware that this is an overclocked version and at 620 mhz "should" perform slightly better than the stock 540 GT.
As a side note, I find it interesting that that chart shows a better performance for the 256mb version of the 8600gts than the 512mb version??

Toms Hardware has this chart that categorizes cards that are roughly equivalent. They recommend not bothering with a change unless it moves you up at least 3 categories.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/12/03/best_graphics_card/page6.html
Consistent with your comments moving from a 7600GT to an 8600GT would only move you 2 categories.

Maybe not, but it would be a decent upgrade from the onboard video that many entry level PC's come equipped with. The 8600gt (and the faster 8600 gts) also take very little power (relatively speaking) and should be suitable for the cheaper power supplies also found in many entry level PC's.
I'm thinking of trying one of these in my new HP, which has crummy 6150se onboard video. Should be a big improvement, provided it works...

It is available at the Woodbine location. They had about 15 of them when I was there last week.
However, there is one detail that I'm hoping to get confirmation on. The rebate specifically says tigerdirect.ca. I'm curious if they'll honour it since it was bought at the B&M store.
I expect they would, but......

I'm looking to get a card for a HTPC, that will need to do 720p, and occasionally 1080p; I was going to ask about this card's handling of h.264 encoding, but found it in a neoseeker review - seems this puppy is great at h.264, and allows usage of a less capable PC CPU; my only other concern I'd think is fan noise and level of heat generated. Any comments on fan noise, or alternative fans/heat sinks? (And whether or not the rebate will work if it's a B&M purchase)
... the most welcome of addition to the 8600 series is the enhanced HD video features. The PureVideo HD (VP2 + BSP + AES128 Engine) is a method whereby all of the video processing of HD video (HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, H.264) is handled by the GPU, thus off-loading the system processor. In the past, HD-DVD and Blu-ray media required CPU processing to help decode the media stream. The changes for the added PureVideo HD functionality were made within the G84 and G86 silicon itself. A bitstream processor and second generation video processor comprise most of the new hardware which will now handle HD decoding. With the GeForce 7900 and even the G80 based 8800 series, NVIDIA 's decoding system would only finish off the last two steps of the process while the CPU off-loaded the first two steps. Now the new core architecture will compensate for all four steps to minimalize CPU usage and prevent framerate drops during video playback. So in theory this means that a less power CPU is required for HD playback if you have a 8600 GTS, 8600 GT or 8500 GT working in conjunction with it.

Toms hardware has a page that tells you how much difference there is between every card. It tells you if a card is worth upgrading to or not.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/02/04/best_cards_february_2008/page7.html
"I don't recommend upgrading your graphics card unless the replacement card is at least three tiers higher."
The 8600gt is three tiers higher than your x1650 pro, which makes it a marginal upgrade.
FYI the 8800gt is SIX (6) tiers higher than the 8600gt.

8800GT is rated one of the best performance/$ cards. It dominates the performance for its price range.
I have a 8600M GT. Crysis still lags at medium.
P.S. i don't suggest anyone upgrading their systems part by part. That's really expensive. Just build a new one when the time comes. When you upgrade your graphic card, you need more power, maybe a new cpu to keep the system from bottlenecking, which means a new motherboard and finally more RAM. To top that off, you need new fans to coupe with the extra heat being produced.

that psu should be fine , it shows it's true output unlike cheap psu's. heat depends on how good the airflow is in your case, you may need to get a better exhaust fan for the case or stick another in the front fan position if its empty.(if you see the heat increase)

7900GT is faster than the 8600GT. The 8xxx series though is DX10 compatible, however it's basically useless on that card because it's too slow for DX10 anyways. I don't know if the 7900GT is faster than this XXX card though because it does have quite an OC from the factory. Maybe somebody else could chime in.

Not sure where you saw hdcp but are you sure you are not mistaking this for another model? The xfx product page shows that not all of them have hdcp. Maybe they just forgot to show it in their spec sheet. I would have gotten this if spec sheet said hdcp. Anyways, I ended up with an asus model which was more expensive  .

Just a heads up on Tiger Direct's rebates since some people have questioned them in this thread. I purchased a 640MB 8800GTS some months ago and forgot that I'd sent in the 50.00 rebate but got it in the mail about a month ago or approximately 2 months after sending it out. No problems at all and I'd happily purchase something from TD again with a mail in rebate based on this experience.

Locally canadacomputers has 'em for $55+tax. It's a directx 10.1 card, with more than enough horsepower for h.264/mpg2/VC1, meaning blueray.
