The Amazon.com Gold Box Deal of the Day is pretty sweet today, at least for movie buffs. They've got the Universal Artists 90th Anniversary Prestige Collection for $349.99 US (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fgoldbo x%2F&tag=redflagdeal02-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325). This set has 90 movies spanning 110 DVDs. At about $4 per movie, I think this is a pretty good deal.

The movie selection tends towards older classics although there's no shortage of more modern films. Among others, you're getting 12 Angry Men, Moby Dick, West Side Story, Annie Hall, Rocky, Inherit the Wind, Rain Man, Hotel Rwanda, Midnight Cowboy, Last Tango In Paris, Bowling For Columbine, Fiddler on the Roof, 5 James Bond Films and more.

As this falls under DVDs, it will ship to Canada without problems (no free shipping though), so don't let that stop you.

Don't forget the duties, and possibly shipping though? I'm not sure if their free shipping applies to canada from amazon.com?

You will pay a shipping fee, but typically, there are no duties and brokerage fees for items from Amazon.com. They ship to/from a warehouse in Canada.

Shipping is a whooping $7.98 for Toronto!

No taxes either - good deal for those who are into movies.

Considering this is a 90 movie collection, $7.98 is bargain! If you only buy a single dvd, the shipping would be $7.98. This box set must weight more than 10 lbs.

This deal would be a great to movie buffs like me but there is a lot of duplication. I already have the Bond Movies, the Clint Eastwood Westerns. and movies like the Great Escape and the Magnificent Seven. And the majority of these movies can be bought for less than $10, some in the $5 to $7 range. So why buy the entire box set when you can pick and choose the movies you like. And you get lemons like Heaven's Gate, considered one of the worst movies ever made.
Furthermore, I would say 1/3 or more of the movies are shown commercial free on TCM anyways. You can record them for free when they are shown on TCM. Movies like 12 Angry Man, The Manchurian Candidate, Moby Dick, Marty are shown many times a year on TCM.
