I was at Tigerdirect in Etobicoke, watching a guy load the Onkyo HTSR800 HTIB into his car.
A few people had mentioned this unit around Christmas, but it was from Amazon.com, or Vanns, or any other number of US online stores,
that wouldn't ship to Canada. Average price in US is $449.
The guy said he saw it 2001 A/V for $899.
He said that Tigerdirect in Etobicoke, offered to import it from their US stores, with no warranty for $449. Then he promptly bought a 1 yr warranty from TD.
Saved alot of $ and got a great unit.

I can speak for the quality of the Onkyo SR 800. I picked it up in Oregon at frys. It was $500 regularly on sale for 450 and no taxes in Oregon.
One of the best buys bar none for home theater, this set is 7.1 with HDMI switching. It sounds great, and the 10" subwoofer rumbles the enter house. I honestly believe that this system is worth about $800 bucks and at 450 you CANNOT find anything comparable to this system. The front and center channels sound great and look amazing. I just cannot say enough about this system. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Would buy again at $450.

I love my Onkyo HTIB; of course it's not as a good as a dedicated A/V system, but it trumps all the other garbage HTIB's that are out there. The speakers are solid and it's an active subwoofer. Can't beat that.

It's called the HT-R550, but it's just the same as a TX-SR505 with a different look. All internals and features are supposedly the same.

So is this the best sub 450 HTIB?
I am looking to buy one but I don't need a DVD player.

It's a great unit for sure, but it's going to be very hard to get this for under $600 final cost unless you get it from the USA.

Wouldn't it still be covered by the manufacturer for a year?

It could be warranty in the US only
EDIT: Unauthorized dealer? http://www.us.onkyo.com/warranty.cfm

Just talked to a number of Onyko service dealers in Toronto -- all said..that once the item is bought in the US -- if there is an issue, it will have to be sent to the US for any issues -- it's not covered here.
Called TD -- they said they can order for me, but cannot offer any warranty of any kind...upto me to "risk" it...
Might have to pass on this deal....any opinions???
Thanks

HDMI Pass Through (2in/1out , 1080P compatible) — A separate audio connection is necessary
Onkyo's have pretty decent reliability, however I have read of overheating issues (so make sure you have enough room for this unit) and of static noises when switching inputs.
Just my 2 cents
(I do not own a Onkyo system, though I did research them a lot before I settled on a different HTiB)

The warranty from TD is probably not worth the paper it is printed on

I still don't know why people keep dropping $500+ on these entry level recievers that don't do HDMI audio when you can get ones that do for just a hundred or two more.
Why would not not want to future proof yourself? Why would you spend $500 on a receiver that can't even do Dolby TrueHD if/when you decide to fully upgrade to HD?

If you want a warranty, buy a 3 yr mack warrranty for $20.
Supposed to get good reviews at AVSForum
http://techcomm.ca/1020.htm
The price at TD in Etobicoke was $439 shipped.
AS for the poster who said u can get a better reciever for $200 more, u can also get better speakers, and better tv, and so on.
For those looking for a quality set, at a terrific price, this unit rocks.
HDMI audio is great, buts not for everyone, some people have limited $$.

I have a Mack warranty on my TV, I haven't used it which is good, but from what I've read they are good warranty option. (I believe you get the work done locally, and send them the bill, since they don't have shops in Canada)
As for recommending a better system...thats hard to do, these Onkyo HTIB's are pretty good for the money, you won't get much better unless you buy a receiver and speakers separate.
If you want a HTIB that processes Audio, then I could recommend the one I have, picked it up for $509 in Buffalo:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=342SCFVHCVOZJKC4D3JFAFQ?sku Id=8507047&st=as720&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1186004972651
(Even though its only available in the USA, Samsung Canada still covers the 1yr warranty, though you can call them to be sure)
The AS720 has 2 hdmi inputs but lacks component inputs all together. This could be a big down side for some (for me it wasn't), but it does have 2 optical and 1 coaxial input for digital audio from non-HDMI components(just need to run video to TV if it's component or a 3rd HDMI input).
Anyway, check out the AVS HTIB forums for tons of reviews/opinions/info on any system you can find: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=7&f=109
