Okay this is my first deal so don't flame me on my attempt. I was searching for a new LCD tv and I cam across this 32" ACER on the TSCC website on sale for only $499 (web only) I'm new to LCD tvs so i'm not too sure about ACER as a brand but a 32" for 500 seems pretty good to me.

Picture quality is good but the humming noise is too much to bear for many users, included me. Most, if not all have that humming noise so exchange is not an option. The sound comes from speakers but can't be reduced by lowering volume to zero or mute. The only way to fix it is to open the case and cut off the speaker wires.

I bought this TV in October 2006 and I've been very pleased with it. This is a 2nd HDTV for me and really only gets used 2-5 hours per week max. But the HD Quality is surprisingly good and the SD quality is well above average for a LCD screen. I am also impressed with the black levels, they look as good as most of the highend names and the input selection is great too. It ahs 1 HDMI,1 DVI, 1 VGA, 1 PC Audio in, 2 Component, 2 S-video and 2 Composite. I paid $889 and at the time was a good deal, if I needed another TV now I'd jump at this for $499, no question.
Here are some HD pictures I took just after getting the TV.

I can't say I've ever noticed this. I listen to the volume at somewhere around 16-25 depending on what I'm doing and it has never hummed.

I have the Acer 27" tv and it also has this humming noise. Only way to get rid of it is MUTE. I believe this is because it entirely turns off the connection to the speakers. Even if you plug in headphones ... the humming noise will come through the headphones. I sent it in for warranty repair and, no surprise, it came back with the exact same problem. I've had this happen with many warranty issues on different things ... so I pretty much expect them not to fix the problem. It is minor enough that I can't be bothered to send it in again. I was away for 3 weeks when I sent it in the first time.
When the volume is up you won't notice it. However, if there is a really quiet scene in a movie you might hear it. Try turning the volume to 0 ... you should be able to hear it loud and clear the. If you can't ... then I guess you got a reallly good one. If you buy from a store ... try testing out the display and if it doesn't hum ... ask for that one :D
Seems like a good TV overall (I got a killer deal at the time on it) ... but I'm no LCD expert either. I'm not a great judge of picture quality. When it was hooked up to my friend's Xbox360 the picture seems very clear. That's the only HD source I've tried it out with. Mine is 720p not 1080p.

Not many people did though. At some Zellers you had to put up a pretty good fight to get it at that price because they said the additional 30% discount was already built into the price. You (and I) were a couple of the fortunate few I think ... although I got the 27" ... not the 32".

This is a great LCD! I bought this a year ago from the Bay...and yes there was a humming sound coming out of it. From my understanding, it was from a fan that circulated and diffused the heat from the monitor...but I may be wrong as others are pointing it out to be the speakers.
The humming is not terrible, but it is noticeable, but soon after you get used to it and to me it's just white noise....
As for the quality, I think the PQ was great for a 32", it can produce up to 1080i pictures. You don't need 1080p unless it's a 42" and higher, so I found this to do the job when watching some HD movies on CityTV or just regular HD shows on my box.
For those seeking to set this up with their home theatres, there is no AUDIO OUTPUT. So if you were planning on sticking this and hoping to use an output to plug into your HT, it's not going to work. You either need a receiver or look for another TV (this is one of the reasons why I upgraded to a 42" LG :) )
Hope this helps ppl out!

I had this tv for a little while but ended up returning it cuz of the humming noise. I had the tv in my room and at night when I wanted to watch some tv I had to put the volume low cuz people are sleeping and it got quite annoying. But if the tv is on loud enough you can barely hear the humming.

Yes. NTSC tuner = regular TV (standard definition) channels.

This seems like a pretty good deal.I have been looking for a 24" monitor to use in a dual setup for mostly watching movies and TV on so this might be a better option for me.I take it though this wouldn't look all that great as a monitor for computer desktop work due to the lower resolution and larger size.Anyone use 32" TV's as their desktop monitor? Does it look that bad? I think I'd like having the higher resolution from a 24" monitor though but this seems like a very good price for this TV. Canada Computers sells this TV for around $600 I think.

I have a 32" 720p samsung that I am using as computer monitor via vga. I have it running at native res and while the colour and brightness are great the res is a little on the low side. Then again, I amo nly about 2 feet away from the screen. WAAY to close. Given that this thing doesn't have a tuner, you are probably better of sticking with a 24" monitor.

I wasn't really worried about this not having a tuner as I would probably add a HD receiver to my ExpressVu account anyway but it says it as a NTSC tuner but no ATSC tuner. Not having a ATSC tuner doesn't really mean all that much to me due to the fact there are no OTA signals where I live.:)

I'm using a 32" LCD for htpc and it works great for that.
I wouldn't recommend using as a main pc though as the font are too small in native resolution. You can increase the font size/ play with the resolution to get a more readable font, bu t then you aren't running in native mode so the PQ is not as crisp.
ALso, IMHO the picture is more setup for watching videos/games etc... You may want to check out the 24" Westinghouse at BB if your main goal is a monitor.

So you've seen these 2 TVs side-by-side?
Well I have seen them side by side and compared them extensively, although it may have been last years Toshiba 32". I was in the market for a new TV in Sept 06 and looked at the 32" Toshiba because I like Toshiba (owned 3 of them at the time). It was $1199 at Futureshop for the 32" Toshiba and $889 for the Acer 32" at TSCC. I did think the Toshiba had better HD picture quality overall and was about the same on SD conent. I didn't need ATSC or an extra HDMI and all other inputs were pretty much the same. I didn't think that the Toshiba was worth $310 more at that time.
If it were only $100 like now, I'd probably get the Toshiba too. But to be honest I was surprised at how well the Acer compared to Toshiba, Sony, and LG TV's priced within $400 or so for 32". This is a great TV, unlike many other cheap brands.

I got myself a 32" samsung and it works fine. Actually it really depends what you're doing of course. It's usually about 2-3 feet in front of me and I use it to surf the web/email and stuff. Sometimes I watch movies farther back and it's great.
I had it plugged in through S-video at first and that really turned me off, now I do it through DVI and the picture quality is the same as what any other LCD monitor would be like.
I also occasionally play games and 1360x768 resolution doesn't really bother me, although that may be the only drawback. Not everyone needs 1600x1200..really depends on yourself.

yes it can be wall mounted, i have mine stuck to the wall at home.
I bought it back when it was $650ish at the bay for a while, I've been very pleased with it, i only ever had one issue and that was when my 4 year old decided since he could not hear the sound he'd crank the volume to the max and then change the input and blew the speaker controller board or something similar, so i called acer, they had me bring it to a local tv service depot, took about a week for them to fix it and i picked it up... didn't even need my receipt :)

If they're expecting you to pay the same price for the floor model as a new model then I would think you're getting ripped off. Those TV's are usually running in the store 8+ hours per day(more than any of us probably use). Doesn't sound good to me.
