Buy.com Canada just got the Western Digital 2TB hard drive in stock today, and they've lowered their price. It's listed at $552.89, and you get 5% off your order as a promo right now, bringing the price down to $525.25 before taxes! And free shipping! [edit: sold out in a hurry, and the price has gone up. See below for a better deal from Costco!]

For 2TB of storage this is a hot price!
By comparison, Costco.ca just LOWERED their price too. (Edit: on the My Book WORLD EDITION) They're selling it for $549.99. http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10305569
Other retailers are selling these drives for well over $600.

Just FYI, the one @ buy.com is Western Digital MyBook Pro Edition II - 2TB Triple Interface: USB2.0 FW400 and FW800 (NOT Ethernet)
The one from Costco is MyBook WORLD EDITION II (includes Gigabit Ethernet)
VERY different models you are comparing here. The World Edition is a lot more versatile for accessing data around the world.
Very good deal on the Costco model - World Edition

the drive isn't that fast ... also it has horrible bloatware software that needs to be running for you to be able to access the data on the drive.
Sorry .. I am referring to the World Edition, the one with the built-in ethernet port.

Is it fast enough to use as a massive video storage and stream to things like the ps3 via tversity?

Can't use as a media storage. I might as well share my 8GB USB key if I just want to share some pictures and word documents.

xwar - I have a WD MyBook WE 1TB on my network at home, and use it to stream video files - no problem. I don't stream through a PS3, but it works for me. I've done MP3, AVI & MPEG II - no issues.

Now I see the light. Access Anywhere is different from network share. You can stream any file across the network but not through "Access Anywhere" across the internet.

I think WD just shot themselves in the foot. Wouldn't restricting through file extension name just inconveniences legitimate users who want to do direct video or audio streaming through the internet?
Those who really want to 'share' the content of the hard disk to whole world would have the files compressed with rar or zip to save storage space anyway.

Can someone explain this comment? Charge for what?
The World book is a standard NAS you don't need to pay anyone anything to use it.

When you get the WB you can sign up for a service called (I think) Access Anywhere that allows you to get to your NAS using their Web Service. There is a monthly fee for that, I think - I didn't sign up for it.

what router do you guys use to stream video to PS3. I am more interested in HD videos my wireless G can do SD without problems. I am using TVersity on my computer upstairs which is connected through wifi and is using a wireless G card. My router is a wireless N and downstairs with my ps3 and T.V.
I was thinking of buying a wireless N card for my computer and then stream the video to my PS3. I know that PS3 is only G so I was planing to have a wired connection between my PS3 and router. Will this work.

i think the answer might be inaccruate. it contradict itself: "WD Anywhere Access will always allow the connection, file sharing, or file access to the WD My Book World Edition hard drive" and the text you put in bold. wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD_Anywhere_Access) metioned ftp, maybe it's suppose to be "Access and share files via ftp" as one of the services the subscription provides.

File access restrictions and monthly fees are just for access to their crappy Access Anywhere service. You can choose to not sign up for it and turn it off.
The mybook world is fully hackable, there are several pages on how to install additional software such as a UpNp server and a torrent drop client.
If you want to access your NAS from the internet, just make your router make it accessible outside your network and get some free dns mapping like dyndns... ohh and password protect it.

You are absolutely right, but most people buying this drive are looking for a simple solution, not one that requires them to learn how to set up their router and install additional software. It is these consumers that the world book is marketed to, and they should be a lot more up front about the monthly subscription and the file restrictions.
And yes, if you read any reviews, this drive is apparently incredibly slow and prone to failure.

Unfortunately i use a hardline with my PS3 and that of course is good for HD files, i use a wrt54g and it works very well. THat being said a "N" router would be all but useless cause teh PS3 doesnt use it.

I have the 1TB WE II, slowest NAS ever, very loud fan. Avoid at all cost.
I've read a few reviews that noted the fan, but most of the reviews were positive enough for "good price with good space".
Of course this NAS drive will be slow if you are not on gigabit, here's a clip from a review:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2106449,00.asp
The My Book connects to the network via gigabit Ethernet. We copied a gigabyte of data over our Gigabit Ethernet network, which took 4:46 (four minutes, 46 seconds.) That's fairly typical for this class of device, but once you've copied over all relevant data, most file access is reasonably quick.
However, if your network is fast Ethernet that maxes out at 100mbit speeds, then you'll see much slower performance. Any potential performance issue is network related; you'll never saturate the SATA interface on the hard drives in a typical home environment, even with several users accessing the device: the network will be the bottleneck.
I still think it is a good buy for a home network storage device even though it does not support media streaming to an Xbox 360. I am trying to have a Non-Quebec friend buy it for me from Ontario *shakes fist at Costco Quebec*.

So for 10/100 ethernet cards, this product just sucks? Only my notebook computer has a gigabit ethernet card. My Linksys ethernet port is 10/100 as well.
Which My Book model should I be looking into for my outdated home network if this the World edition is no good ?
