Compaq or not I think it's a hot deal! I paid $1000 for a similar setup last spring and I thought it was a hot deal at the time.

Actually English OR French is more accurate. Once you chose the language to install you can't change it without re installing the OS.
and if it's 14.1"
Why would a 14.1" screen be better than a 15.4" screen?

Good looking notebook. But T2330 is pentium duo, not core 2 duo. Pentium duo is even worse than amds.

"the bottom line is that you get equal or better performance in every test without increasing cost or decreasing battery life. Owners of Core Duo laptops really have no reason to worry about upgrading for now, and waiting for the Santa Rosa platform before your next laptop upgrade seems reasonable. Those looking to purchase a new notebook on the other hand have no reason to avoid Core 2 Duo models, assuming pricing is consistent with what Intel is promising."
From Anandtech
From a quick google search, it appears the biggest improvement gains of the Core 2 Duo is in rendering of audio/video editing and gaming. In terms of normal everyday use, it doesn't appear that there is a huge gain in performance.

Thinking of getting it for my dad. Do you think anything compares to it in the same price range?

Actually looked at it and on the bottom it reads that it's designed by HP.

you guys do know that compaq is a sub-brand of hp....they use the compaq brand to target the low end, and hp pavilion to target the mid-high end consumer and their business line for business, etc.
internally, the compaq should be near identical to the the hp dv6000 series. it lacks the webcam, remote, and imprint finish the closest hp has, but other than that it's the same. i wouldn't even be surprised if it was made from the same OEM.

what are you smoking.
the pentium dual core T2330 is based on the core architecture, it however has "only" 1mb of cache.
so it's essentially a core 2 T5200 processor with half the cache.
comparably in speed to the TL series AMD and defintely faster than the TK series.

Well yeah, I have noticed that the memory is only a half but it is really cheap these days. The upgrade will cost around $50 if not less. Also I don't think video memory matters much for Internet browsing or Word processing.
But would you trust Toshiba more than Compaq?

Not sure what you're trying to say... The Santa Rosa platform came out nearly a year ago, and I'm pretty sure that Core2Duos are faster for everything, not just gaming or editing, and I own a laptop with that processor, and one with the Core 2 equivalent.

I'm just saying that the average user will probably not notice the difference. This is a decent laptop for the price, that is all.

Compaq or not I think it's a hot deal! I paid $1000 for a similar setup last spring and I thought it was a hot deal at the time.
Then you overpaid, because I paid $659 for that "price error" 640m last spring, which I doubt if it was really price error, but even at regular sale price it wasn't gonna be $1000.
