deranged

i got a shirt tailored to bring it in so its a more "slim" fit rather than classic fit. when i got it back it got longer and thinner (everywhere, not just the sides where the tailor fixed). The tailor said he "pressed" it to reverse the effects the drier had on it.
so i was wondering, how does this work?
i have a few shirts/sweaters that got wider and shorter after the drier. i paid good money for them and would like to wear them again.
how do i do this "pressing" thing and where can i do it for cheap?
