Okay, time to dust off the old memory book and recollect the best Valentine's day for me.
My best Valentine's day actually started in 1998. I was in first year university and just started dating a girl I knew from highschool. I couldn't afford anything as I was a full time student on OSAP with no income. So I convinced my girlfriend at the time that we should exchange letters to eachother for Valentine's day and not open it until 5 years down the road, Valentine's day 2003. She thought it was a sweet idea, fortunately for me. So we exchanged our letters, taped it on our walls and that was pretty much it that year.
Five years passed and somehow we were still together. Things weren't exactly perfect between the two of us as I was trying to focus on my career and she was getting restless, dating the same guy for 5 years with no indication from me of any 'future' together. I wasn't letting her talk about marriage with me. Arguments were frequent and many threats of breaking up were thrown in my direction. I bit my tongue and took it all in.
I was just starting my first low paying job and still broke, paying back my OSAP loans (damn OSAP!!!). Valentine's day quickly approached and I again suggested a cheap night of just opening our old letters. She wasn't totally into being cheap anymore but went along with it reluctantly, probably thinking she would break up with me soon anyway. We were over at my place and I opened her letter first. I don't remember what she wrote. :D
It was now her turn. She opened my letter and started reading. Slowly her eyes began to water and when she finished reading, she looked up at me and quietly said "Yes".
So that's my story.
Readers Digest Summary:
I proposed to my girlfriend in 2003 through an exchanged letter back in 1998. Couldn't afford a ring but that doesn't matter anymore. We've been happily married since 2004 and have just welcomed our first son this year.
p.s. I'm a sap.
p.p.s. I was inspired by the movie "My Sassy Girl". Can you tell :cheesygri
edit: turns out I may have inspired the movie instead
