Does anyone have any experience with either of these two facilities for new arrivals in Mississauga?

My wife and I are expecting lil' cheapskate #3 in the fall, and we're still relatively new to the area.

Thanks for any input or advice!

Credit Valley - very good and modern - I think given the numbers both places are very experienced and "baby factories" - couldn't fault CV. Trillium is a lot older facility though we never used it so I may be wrong about the delivery unit

I went to Trillium because that is closer to my home and my favourite OB/GYN works at Trillium. From what I've heard and not sure if that's true, Credit Valley tends to rush you to give birth since they've less birthing suites ?? and hence a higher rate of C-section (and that's what I was afraid of). Yes, the building itself is older but other than that, everything is fine and I love the bed with touch pad that you can control the angle, the height etc ...

Trillium has one or two whirlpool room (which did help me a lot) which I believe CV doesn't have. If you go to Peel prenatal class, you can ask the teacher what the difference as well.

All of my friends went to Credit Valley and they love it too. I would probably still choose Trillium and the same OB/GYN for the next baby.

Credit Valley was AMAZING L&D nurses were the best and the facilities were awesome.

but I thought I saw something at my doctors office a week ago that CV was NOT accepting new L&D for the next 7 months.

Talk to your MD

+1 for Credit Valley, but it really depends where your MD and OB/GYN have rights at. There are some OB/GYN based in the offices around CV, so they just easily hop across the road to see you in L&D.

There wasn't any pressure to go to c-section at CV on long delivery, seems like they want to avoid it if possible. They are pretty fast to induce/ break water, but it might be more from a comfort viewpoint.

Decide on epidural ahead of time so L&D can make arrangements for an anesthesiologist when the time comes.

We had our first baby at Trillium and our second at Credit Valley. Labour and Delivery-wise we definately had a better experience at Credit Valley.

At Trillium, just to put the IV, the nurse poked my wife 5-6 times with the needle. Even the anesthesiologist tried, and couldn't do it. They eventually put the IV higher up on her arm. The nurse at CV got it on her first try.

At Trillium, our baby was born between 9-10pm. It was extremely busy, so we were only able to get a semi-private room. Visiting hours were over, and because there was another new mom in the room, I was told I couldn't really stay (in the room). No biggie, I just went home and slept :cheesygri

At Trillium, I got kicked out of the room when doing the epidural. At CV, they actually let me stay and watch...

Trillium discharged us from the hospital, without doing a hearing test for the baby....

...but it's all good. We actually liked Trillium as well. Both are good hospitals, but our overall experience was just a bit better at Credit Valley

The nurse from the Peel prenatal class told me that it is a standard procedure to kick everyone out when doing epidural coz the room has to be steroid (sp?).

Trillium discharged us from the hospital, without doing a hearing test for the baby....

They asked me and I chose not to do the test at the hospital because I wanted to go home earlier the next morning. I was then instructed to do it at a later date off site.

Any recommendations on the CV OB/GYN?

I got tossed at CV during the epidural. Also, no hearing test at CV. I think it was done at the Early Years. Your MD will refer you to his OB/GYN. I don't think you get to decide.

BTW, Trillium does have a very good kids clinic - Col. Saunders (as in KFC). CV doesn't have one

I was speaking for my experience a year ago.

At Trillium, they did have someone on site to do the hearing test. However, I wanted to go home earlier since my mom came to help me from overseas (as I suppose to stay there 2 nights), so I need to take my LO to do the hearing test at another place near Winston Churchill/Dundas off site at another date.

My MD did refer me to her choice of OB/GYN. But I told her I want to see one of another 2 OB/GYN that I like and were recommended by people in another moms forum. So, my MD handled the change for me. So, yes, you can choose.

Any recommendations on the CV OB/GYN?

We used Dr Charal (905-820-5200). I thinks he's actually a GP and part of a bigger practice that does L+D. They are based out of 2300 Eglington which is right next door to CV. It's quite easy for him or one of his partners to walk across to CV to check on you. At one point, he was visiting every 90 mins. When the time comes, he's there in under 5 min.

L&D nurses were excellent. The regular ward was so-so (compared to L&D)

The one thing I didn't like at CV was the length of time to get discharged from the regular ward. For example, if you are suppose to go home in the AM, you won't be out of there until after 3pm. It's bad in that it ties up a bed for an extra 6 hours that could have been used by someone else.

I really like the Trillium Kids After Hours/ Walk-in Clinic. I don't think it been mentioned before, but it is funded by a donation from Col. Harland Sanders of KFC fame. You might want to save the info if you need after hours care for the LO

Call the hospital and find out if there are any midwives who have staff access to the hospital. Midwifery service is fully paid for by the government, and the care you receive is amazing.

We had our first baby at the Trillium site in November. Overall, the facility seems a bit old, but the overall attitude and service were quite nice. They allowed us to stay there in one of their pre-hospital wards, we used the jacuzzi (helped a lot), and the anesthesist did the epidural very quickly and efficiently (they allowed me to stay in the room). We were lucky to get the private ward, but this will really depend on the availability at any given moment. Overall, we would not hesitate to have our second baby there.

CV has a Tim Horton's right in the hospital. Case closed.

Actually, I don't even know, maybe Trillium has one as well? I know when my second was born at Brant (Burlington), I couldn't wait for that Timmies to open after being up all night with a wife in labour. I think I suffered as much as she did. (just kidding).

Congrats on #3, Deep!

I was asked to leave during the epidural as well at CV. The hearing test was done twice because there was too much mucous the first time.

I have no experience at Trillium, but I would echo the positive comments about CV. The L&D nurses were great and were very accommodating.

Another thing I would like to pass along is to pick the baby's name before hand because it makes the paperwork at the hosipital a lot easier.

If you pick the name afterwards, your paperwork can get lost more easily (CV) and it's a MAJOR pain to get everything straight again (baby's OHIP card, birth certif., etc).

I just recently had my baby at Credit Valley. I had heard two horror stories of women not being able to get the epidural because the anesthaesiologist (sp?) was too tied up. This freaked me out...but I had no issues there.

They were really really busy the morning that we got there, so the admission process was a little rushed and uncertain. But we were able to get a birthing room soon and the nurses were definitely awesome.

I would recommend getting a midwife though. Only because the nurses have limited ability and time to help you with your pain, while a midwife is there ONLY for YOU and your partner. I will be getting one for baby #2 whenever that happens!

I found the doctors at credit valley to be okay....he approved my epidural at 2 cm though - woohoo!! but, to go for your appointments, it's a hassle (long waits, even in the morning) and you see a different doctor everytime.

We also had our hearing test before we left....we didn't want to stay another night, and so the nurse arranged for the hearing test and blood tests to happen right when the 24 hrs were up...so that was nice of them.

dooferella, now that you mentioned it ...

My friend delivered her 2nd baby in Dec 2007 at Credit Valley and couldn't have epidural also because the anesthaesiologist was busy with someone else. I wonder if they had many big big operation going on in Dec.
