A true RFD Valentine Day!!
In the first year the we were married, my wife and went to Cuba for our first Valentine day together. It was spring of 2004, wonderful experience, warm weather, great beachs, cheap cigars, inexpensive rum. However that is only the beginning of the story.
I had to figure out how to add value to this first holiday together!! So with a bit of preplanning, I gave her a birthday card and brochure for this trip on her Dec 24 birthday. She was ecstatic, a trip to the Caribbean as birthday present
With next day being Christmas and her birthday present dwarfing any other possible Christmas ideas, I didn’t have to get her a present. Our trip was both a Christmas and birthday present for her. (RFD tip…get married to someone that has a birthday on Christmas or Christmas Eve…you avoid buying two presents!)
Also, since we not taken a honeymoon when we got married earlier that year, the Cuban holiday was a four event combination, Valentine Day present, Birthday surprise, Christmas gift and a wonderful Honeymoon. Each one was great sun-kissed beach holiday that we still talk about all the time.
And to add more value to the trip, a friend from work said that we could buy Cuban cigars and sell them for profit. So both of us loaded up on “Romeo and Juliets” and duty free rum before we returned to Canada. We drank the rum and sold the cigars for a nice profit.
It’s true story and my wife has not left me in spite my bargain-hunting. In fact, she loves bargains and can haggle with the best of them. We just had a beautiful son and we spurge on him!!
I think that my wonderful wife deserves the best of everything, so the bargain hunter in me needed to share the frugal tale of our first Valentine Day as couple!
Perhaps we will have another good Valentine bargain story to share?
Am I too cheap?
