View Full Version : Which watch to puchase?

Well recently my Tommy watch battery died after a year of usage; so I thought I could just pop open the battery cover and replace the battery. Well after I did that; I could not close the backing of the watch. After stumbling through some of the boxes in my basement I found out that you need to mail the watch to TH to replace the battery; doing so yourself voids you warranty and might require additional repairs. Kinnda sucks; but I am not mailing a $180 to pay $40 to get it repaired; the watch is pretty scratched up as well.
So now I am in the market for a new watch. My budget is $200-250. I am not sure what kind of watches I can get in this price range; found some Seiko, TH, Bulova... Not sure which one is the best in this price range; I do like Seiko since it is a japanese crafted watch; definately well designed. I also like the Bulova but had one before and it broke after about 2 years of usage (not paying $40 to repair a $200 watch lol). Any suggestions or sites to check out?
Thanks in advance.

I don't think many people on this board, me included that will argue against a Seiko. If you can get down to the States, they hvae much better deals and you can get a Tissot or something for a bit more.

I was really surprised, but there were some decent watches at Costco. A lot of Citizens (I got my Titanium one there a year or two ago... the EcoDrive is very neat). A lot of them are in the 150-250 range.
Seiko is definitely a great brand. A lot of swiss made watches are good too, like Swatch or Omega.

I'd recommend against buying in canada as the prices are just too inflated. Even comparing amazon.com shows you get better deals on regular name-brand watches.

Seiko makes some quality watches for it's price.
anyone know where in GTA to get a new cheap Tissot watch for ~$200 for me to bang around?

Check Costco, then go to the smaller stores and see what you can knock off the prices.
I recommend against ebay because of fakes.

I like Seiko's kinetic/automatic watches with their "Auto Relay" technology.
You stop wearing it and it stops, a few days later, pick it up and give it a shake and it auto-advances to the correct time and day.

Isn't that how Automatic watches work? I'v had my Seiko divers watch for 10 years and its still works for me.

That is sick. Thanks for the suggestions; I will check out ebay for some Seiko/Swiss watches. Winnipeg sucks for watch selection; so I was looking at ebay; some reputable sellers selling Seikos for around the 200-300 mark. Does anyone know what watches Costco carries so I can see if it worth becoming a member to pick up a watch?
As a side note; any thoughts on Bulova? I had one before my TH; it was a nice watch and the crystal is still spotless. My TH one had scratches all over it; but it was also cheaper.

I'm looking for a watch as well, my Seiko watch of 6 years is staring to die on me (Every 2 days - its becomes 5 min earlier). Anyone know of stores in Toronto that have Seiko watches <$200?

If you're looking to buy a costco watch and don't have a membership, you can always browse their website and ask to check out the store (and look at the selection) before signing up for the membership. They range from somewhat expensive watch (Tag) to cheaper watches (AX, Bulova, etc).
I saw Costco have Tissot Touch at the Yorkdale store but it's pricer than most places at ~$550

I bought a Tissot for my boyfriend off eBay. The watch is very well made and he loves it. I got it for around $200 (had it authenticated) and I saw it at the store for $500. You have to be careful of all the fakes on eBay but there are the authentic one there too. Just look a the seller's feedback.
If you are looking to buy from costco, just find a friend who has membership. I don't think it is worth it to get membership just for a watch.

Among real watch companies, they have Rolex, Tag Heuer, Oris, Tissot, Seiko, Citizen and Timex.

Yeah I have been looking at some nice watches as well for a cheap price since my Armani watch isn't doing it for me. I like Seiko as it's cheap and durable for sure!

Nicest watch I saw on costco website was a subpar 100 Nautica watch... Guess instore is where it is at. I will try to get one of my friends who has a membership there to come with me to check the watches out. I have found this watch online though:

$250, Bulova Marine Star. MSRP is $400, I think this watch is beautiful. Anyone know a Seiko model that looks similar to the dial face as this? All the Seikos I have seen don't quite match my style.

Your warranty might have timed out anyway. The only benefit of sending it to an authorized dealer is that it can be re-tested for watertightness - not a big deal unless you drop into a toilet or pool. Otherwise visit some of the dingy watch repaires in the Annex area, most of them will get it done for just a few bucks.
If you're big on warranty coverage, Fossil offers a 7 year warranty and has lots of authorized dealers as well as Fossil Boutiques in most major malls.

I have a Seiko kinetic watch. I really love it.
The stainless steel bracelet was broken. Do you know how much
approximately to replace the stainless steel bracelet ??? I must
send the watch to Seiko or I can buy one to replace?
Thanks a lot.

What kind of Tissot watch are you getting from the US for $200 ish? I'd love a Touch but I'm guessing it's not that right?

I have a question for all those kinetic watches. I was interested in getting this one http://www.overstock.com/Jewelry-Watches/Stuhrling-Original-Symphony-Mens-Skeleton-Automatic-Watch/2201860/product.html
I am worried that it will be too much of a hassle to adjust the constantly.

Oh dear...
Either way, if you wear it everyday without fail, you won't mind it that much. If there are times you go a day or two without wearing a watch... it will eventually start to bother you. I have 2 watches that charge while you wear, and I did not mind resetting them if I left them for 3 or 4 days... but eventually it's more a nuisance.

That is why most people with 2 or more automatic watches own watch winders. The winders are set to rotate for about half an hour everyday to keep your automatic watches fully wound and ready when you need them.

You certainly cannot go wrong with TISSOT (1853), they keep exceptional time and the gold plating goes on for ever, I have had mine for two years, it's time stays right-on all the time.

I have had a Tissot for 9 or 10 years and it works great. The only problem is that after about 8 years I seem to react with the metal strap. It leaves black marks on my arm. (I also had it cleaned and that was not the problem)

seiko's are wonderful watches. good quality, great style and its right within your budget. but in honesty, i think for watches you could do with spending more b/c a nice watch will last you forever (ie tag heuer). personally, i dislike the clothing brand watches (armani, gucci) b/c i don't feel they make quality watches. they're not a watch company, they don't know how to do it properly. ive known ppl who have those watches and they may look nice but they have not lasted as long as a credible watch brand. just my 2 cents.
but for your budget, seiko is the way to go (get kenetic, it is awesome!)

hmmm..I used to worked at a professional watch store. Alot of Asian people like Seiko or Citizen because they are all Japanese Made which isn't true. I know that some low price range Seiko or Citizen are made in China. If you look at the back casing of the watch. Most of the battery operated Seiko or Citizen are cheap China made electronic circuit. So if you really want a Seiko or Citizen watch you need to do some homework, but Their warranty is very good.
Personally I would pick Tissot. They are under Swatch Group. Swiss made movement, Standard 2 years world warranty, crystal glass.

Go shop around of course for prices, but I'd suggest go to some small store that is in a non-busy mall, they will give you more discounts.
Specifically, try the watch store at Centerpoint Mall (Yonge & Steeles), its across from the Pickle Barrel.
Last time I spoke with the guy, about a T-Touch Tissot, he was willing to haggle. I ended up buying a Seiko from him (lifetime battery replacement).
I bought my T-Touch from another store later in Switzerland ... LOVING it

Well after I did that; I could not close the backing of the watch. .
You need a case back closing device. Like a vice for wood work. I have one and I'm sure it will work for your watch. I'm a watch nut, I have special watch tools as well to open all types of watch backs.
Too bad you aren't in Toronto.

FargoTime in Toronto has the best prices for watches. Period. Big Showroom and great selection. Always below retail.
Guess's watches are made by Timex and come with 10 year warranty.
Tommy is made by Movado.
Perry Ellis is made by Seiko.
The designs are done by the fashion company or maybe even just 'signed off' on behalf of the firms by Seiko/Timex etc. I know for Perry Ellis, I have seen noticely similar designs on both perry ellis and seiko lines.
I am also a fan of Seiko watches. Check out the SND series watches. Awesome look.
